Must we use a small toothed comb?

For roller sets? Before I put it on the roller I use a wide toothed comb to detangle. I used to use a small toothed one, but my hair would get pulled out by it. I thik that it gave me a lot of splits too.

Now when I roller set my hair looks the same and I lose very little hair and have almost no split ends...

I always do (then again, I don't roller set often at all) because it works out better for me.

I always use a small tooth comb but i start from the bottom to the top (meaning section, comb from b to the t). My hair is usually detangled beforehand anyway. And if i find some unruly knots, i use my wide tooth comb to get thru them.
