Relaxing 2a-3a a bad thing?

Umm sounds to me OP that you have a lot of learning to do before you jump into chemicals. Are you willing to sacrifice the time and money it takes to have relaxed hair? It's not like you just slap the chemicals in every few months and keep it moving. You have to be extra careful with how you deal with your hair. And if you end up with less volume or thickness, you can't just wash to get your waves back. You're stuck. Make sure you're ready for that.

:look:

I've heard that Asians (Indians) with coarse hair relax their hair to keep it silky straight. I don't know if this is true though.

I have white friends who relax their hair. They have probably 2c - 3a hair.

I have a friend who probably is a 1b and still takes a flat iron to her hair....

My reaction.... :look:

I have 3a hair and I relaxed all through out middle school and high school. I just wanted straight hair like everyone else and that's how you got straight hair as far as I could understand.

Now I know I can get my hair straight simply by wearing it in a bun. It took me a long time to figure this out - I thought I needed heat and chemicals

OWMYgod!!!!!!!!!!! WHy on earth would you want to relax this type of hair!!!!!???? doesn't make sense at ALLL whatsoever!!!!!!!!!! I would die for that hair. OP if this is the kind of hair that you have, then yes it's a huge sin to relax. keep chemicals away from your hair!! that's if u want sincere advice. but we live in a world where informed choice is more superior then sincere advice, so I guess like others said to each their own

:ohwell: ..............

Yep. One of my Indian friends confided in me that her hair was just like mine. She relaxed to big waves not bone straight though. Her family called her hair "nappy". :nono:

My SO's Filipino mom is like a 1b/c. She has an almost undetectable wave to her hair, yet she still relaxes. She doesn't do it often, just whenever she thinks about it. It does nothing positive for her hair and only serves to make her already thining hair appear even thinner. But just the idea that it makes her hair straighter (which it really doesnt) makes her feel better.

If you have the mentality that anything other than stick/bone straight hair is undesirable--intolerable even, you will do what you have to do to get rid of whatever little bit if wave you have.

and this is why sincere advise is almost obsolete. If I value curls more than the person with that type of hair values curls then who Am I to tell them to keep them and love them? SOme people really don't like curl, waves, or kinks period and its their business if they want to relax their hair chemically. IMO it's not necessary but that only applies to me because I value curly/kinky/wavy hair.

I thought the OP wanted to relax her hair because she had coarser hair, and that she was doing it to make her life easier. When someone posted what 2a 3a hair looks like I was gobsmacked! there's much more to this then just 'i like it this way'. skin bleaching, relaxing the hair till its bone straight, coloured contact lenses. I look at some black women around me and I almost think they are ashamed of how God created them. But hey, i work in the health care profession, and I know very well what it means to respect autonomy, even if it results in death. But I thought this is a forum, you wont get in trouble for speaking your mind...lesson very well learned!

How are you in trouble? This is basically where I am coming from, you don't think that type of hair should be relaxed, someone else prefers it that way is equivalent to you thinking the color green looks flattering on someone and that person disliking the color green. Sincere advice, although its a kind gesture, is obsolete because it falls on deaf ears when someone doesn't not share your likes or dislikes. Of course this is just my opinion and I am not nor am I affiliated with the police so no one gets in trouble because what I say is not the law.

The OP sounds like a troll... She's probably just lounging around, bored, trying to ruffle some feathers... Some of the OP's other posts are iffy as well.

:perplexed

Is this the same poster who stalked a guy and posted other fabulous tales? I think her name was ChocolateSumThangOrOther ...

I could be wrong, but I really don't think the op is a troll. I wonder where she is from...her culture...how old she is, etc. because there is obviously some barrier there. But I do believe her questions and thoughts are sincere.

That's a different poster.

@Theresamonet I believe in another thread of hers she said she was 19.

ETA: I see she's 21.

good :drunk: lol

point noted. I suppose I took the benefit of the doubt. some people will take advice if it's sincere. I stopped relaxing after a hair dresser advised me not to relax my hair. Now I would like to know what her manager would think of her if she knew she was sending customers away. we need more hair dressers like that. but I agree people have a right to their choice. i shall put my wip down and remind myself this is a free country hehe

But you said up thread that you would "DIE for hair like that" and "it is a SIN to relax THAT type of hair"...

We can talk about having a preference and an opinion all day long, but when folks start talk about dying for ****, I start to think things may run a bit deeper.

I think you understand what people mean when they say 'I would die for that'. it is for emphasis. That hair is beautiful, and if I truly speak my mind I find it ungratefulness to the max, to relax that type of hair. It starts with a frown in the mirror, and a suggestion by one to relax, and it will lead to other things. my 7 year old niece despises her hair. my older sister talks about marrying a white man so she can have 'cute' babies. This is why I will not buy into all the 'but i just like it this way' nonsense. Having said that, I respect people's choices, but there's no obligation to bury your own.

I have 3B/3C hair and relaxed for 15 years. My hair is so much healthier without the relaxer - much less breakage and my hair is also much fuller. My experience is that the hairdressers that I had were used to relaxing type 4 hair and would leave my relaxers on too long. My hair and scalp couldn't take it and I would get horrible burns and scabs on my scalp.

My daughters have 2B/3A hair and I did BKTs on them. They can easily blow dry straight or airdry for curly hair.

I dont think shes a troll at all, just really curious *shrugs*

I think we tend to use the word troll a little too freely around here though just because they may ask an unconventional question, IMHO.
