Relaxed & Twistout... I'd Want to Know

If you have done a twist out with great results, it's getting very hot and I would like to air-dry my hair most of the time. I love curly hair and twist out is a pretty look for the summer.

Is this a good Idea? I'm clueless

TIA:) ;)

When I was relaxed and in high school I used to get it done at the salon all the time. She used setting lotion on wet hair and did 2 strand flat twists with a perm rod on the end. Then I'd sit under the dryer and she'd take them out once I was dry. If doing the twists on wet hair, make sure your hair is completely dry before you take them out or it won't stay. I know some people do single twists or do it on dry hair but the flat twists on wet hair worked better for me when I was relaxed. It made the waves look more defined. You could sleep on them or leave them in for a few days if you didnt want to sit under the dryer though.

Thanks Bmore

I guess I'll need a tutorial:)

La flaca, all of the twistouts that I have had done have been on my relaxed hair. The first hairdresser that I went to used the EXACT same method that bmore described above. Which is using mousse/setting lotion on my wet hair and doing the 2-strand flat twists with a perm rod on the ends to get the ends curly. I haven't had that done to my hair however in over 2 years. Here is how it turned out.

Recently I got my hair done in twists, however my stylist did them on dry hair. I let the twists stay in for about a week and then I loosed them out, the results were amazing! The curls were more curlier to me and they seemed to look more natural. It may just be a personal preference, though. But my hair looked way fuller than the picture above. However, I'm not sure if its due to the fact that she did it on dry hair or that I left them in as a style for a week before loosing them out. Wish I had taken pictures to show you how those looked, but I didn't.

However, here is an example of how she twisted my hair (on dry hair). This is what I wore for a week before loosing it out.

ETA: ignore the date on that picture. i was actually taken last month, but i haven't set the date on my camera.
Hope this helps!

This is extactly what I do for my twist out. I wash, condition, rinse. Comb WET hair going back. If I want a loose wave, I will do four twists going back and use the orange perm rod to roll it. Now if I am pressed for time, I will sit under the dryer for about 2 hours and go to sleep because my hair is still a bit damp. If I might start on a weekend, I will keep it in all day and air dry. I use to use patene mousse and WGO on my twists, but since LHCF, I use lacio lacio or la bomba and seal with coconut/rosemary mix. Looks sooooo much better! Spritz surge all around. The pic in my siggy is my usual four twist out. If I want it tighter and last longer, I will do six but lately my hair is just too long for six and my arms hurt.:lachen:

Thanks B for explaining it perfectly. I don't have to do it now. I use to sport twistouts with relaxed hair the way B explained it. It would look really good. OP- your hair looks great. I love the way you framed your pictures. I do twist outs now on my natural hair. I let it air dry to show the length.

Co-signing the bolded part:)

You may want to PM Babygurl and ask for instructions on how she did hers. She has an AMAZING looking twistout in her fotki. If I'm not mistaken, she included a list of the products she used as well.

this is an interesting thread.......I'm gonna keep looking at this to see what ya'll do

I agree. Very interesting. I'm going to try the flat twists maybe tonight. And I'll do the twistout this weekend.

I don't like to mess with my wet hair after applying my leave in's b/c it seems more likely to break and tangle. I like to let it dry, and then dampen and detangle in sections. I apply a creamy moisturizer and a sealant. Hair should be dry enough to still have substantial thickness. With relaxed hair the ends usually want to come apart. so after I twist I pin it up - then I twist and the twists around each other ( like when you make two french braids) and pin the ends in the back. I like them to dry alittle stretched so the curl is managable and I don't have to worry about any of them coming out at night.

I am telaxed. I want to do the flat twist and leave them in a day or so and then wear loose. I can't quite get them tight enough? Anyone got any ideas? FYI I don't know how to cornrow either.

definately will be purchasing my hooded dryer b/c my twistouts don't look too good when left to air dry

I can't cornrow either so I just grab two sections and try to get it as close as possible to my scalp. IMO, it doesnt matter how tight, you just want to make sure it is all the way dry so you will not have the frizzies.

LOL! I have seen the craziest things come out the delaware river at Penn treaty park. A boot, deflated basketball, a bird.

I'm natural, but I'm experimenting with my first twistout today. My hair was flat-ironed bone straight and I used setting lotion with a two-strand twist. I like the twistout look better than the braidout. So we'll see how it turns out for me...
