Relaxed - How do you use henna?

Relaxed/Texlaxed heads how do you use henna and how often?

I use a henna/indigo mix. Used to do it every 2 weeks but I am now getting lazy and doing it every 4-6 weeks.

The last time, I mixed it with beer (I forgot who suggested this on LHCF) and the results were FANTASTIC! :yep:

How 'bout you?

I henna every other week, except when I'm going to relax within the next week. I suggested using beer after my postal lady told me about using beer when she lived in Mexico :spinning:.

Last time I did mine, I actually did the 2 Step.

I Co-Washed with Nutrine Garlic. The I Henna'd for about 3-4 Hours.

Then I rinsed with Suave Tropical Coconut for an endless Eternity.

Then I Indigo'd for about 2 Hours and Rinsed Again and then DC with Steam(Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat).

I Hendigo every 6-8 weeks! Great Coverage!

Great Results! Perfect Every Time !

I was doing henna/indigo every other week but I've cut back (lazy) to once a month. I'm due to henna this weekend so I'll try the beer method. I cut back because the last batch I bought did not rinse out 100%.

I did it twice so far and I really need to do it again. I noticed my gray hairs are coming in a lot more now.

I did the first henna/indigo and I got great results but my hair was drier than I'm used to. I waited six weeks when i noticed the gray again and repeated the process.

I mixed my henna with water and let it sit for 12 hours. I applied and let it sit in my hair for 4 hours.

I rinsed with Suave humectant, deep conditioned with motions moisture plus and then I added the indigo.

I let the indigo sit for an hour and I rinsed with the Suave humectant again, and deep conditioned again with the motions.

My hair was very dark and shiny, I loved the results but it was a lot of work. I'm so lazy but I know I need to do it again.

Next time, I'll put the henna in my hair and go to the salon to have my stylist rinse and deep condition me and put the indigo in.

I am relaxed, and I currently henna 2x's per month without fail. I've been henna'ing every 2nd and 4th Friday of each month for about a year now.

I try to use NUPUR henna exclusively, because it contains some great ayurvedic powders that are great for conditioning and strengthening hair, along with its 100% pure henna. But I also have RESHMA and JAMILA henna's in my arsenal.

I mix my henna with coffee, Dabur Amla Oil, and aubrey organics white camelia conditioner. When its a nice, smooth, cake-batter consistency, I apply, and then go to bed. I always sleep with my henna mix.

Next morning, I rinse and do a nice long moisutizing DC, and away we go!!

Indigo is a henna-like, blue-black color. I mix it in with henna in order to get a darker brown instead of the orange that henna gives.

I completely forgot about using beer in my henna. Once I get home from Alaska, I am going to do a two-step henna/indigo/beer and post the results.

Taz007, thanks for starting this thread!

i've been looking in my files but cannot seem to find (yet) the thread where i read a lady was using mayonaise in her hennas!

i know some also use milk, as well as aloe vera juice.

i have a henna related question:

i was just reading on some of the perm boxes where it says NOT to apply perm to hair that has had henna or metallic salts in it.

i've been explained that "metallic salts" refers to henna that IS NOT body art quality, so that's not my precaution, but where they say not to use on hair that has any type of henna has me concerned.

my hair does not like a lot of protein, so i only henna a week before or after my relaxer which is every 2 months

Great thread....subscribing. I have been too terrified to try my henna but I think i'll do it in the next month or so...

I henna every other week but sometimes every week and when I'm really busy or just lazy, once a month.

I mix my henna with just yogurt, the greek or turkish ones.

Before I started using henna, I did some major research, read the complete henna for hair website and asked a lot of questions there and on other forums.

As long as u are using body art quality henna, henna can only be an added bonus to your hair, whether relaxed, texlaxed or natural. I guess they put it on the relaxer box just to be safe because a lot of people don't look into what they are really buying and put on there hair. When using henna that contains ppd, it will literally melt ur hair away. Trust me I have read all the horror stories.

In my search of body art quality henna and/or indigo I actually ran into more boxes of (natural) henna/indigo that contain ppd than boxes that contain real pure henna.

In my opinion, always stay away from boxes that say 'black henna' because they contain ppd and they don't always (have to) list it in the ingredients. There is no such thing as black henna. Henna comes only in a red/orange color, by adding different ingredients to it like beer, tea, lemon and such u can get a slightly different color, lighter or darker.

I only use maroccan henna in the yellow box or fresh henna that I get from an moroccan friend. Her aunt makes it herself by just drying the leaves and grinding them.

Sometimes I will go to a mediterranean market and buy fresh henna from those herbs and spices vendors from Egypt, Iran and India.

Sorry for the long post but I hope this helps

thank you for your very informative post, Teddy B!

i really like the idea of adding yogurt as i am familiar with it and love the added benifits of the lactic acid for my texlaxed roots!

to the bolded, i had no idea it was the "ppd" that we had to look out for and that they could even put that in baq batches without listing it!

now, i will surely check!

OMGoodness PrettyfaceANB and Teddy B , your hair is gorgeous!!!!

Imma have to pull out the henna .... RIGHT NOW!!

Grow - BAQ henna is perfectly safe for relaxed hair, so go 'head and use it!

Nice Thread Tazi!

I love using Henna/Indigo. It's the perfect solution for Me and my Relaxed Hair. It covers gray successfully and the Shine is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! :Flahsssss

And....I don't have to apply 'as often' as I would the Beautiful Browns Collection which I was previously using.:dizzy: (Semi-Permanent)

I think that the effects are cumulative. Meaning that, the more you do it the greater the long term overall benefits. I've been Hendigo-ing over a year, and I'd never return to bottled color.:nono:

The first time I used henna, I made a mix using ACV, it works well for some ladies but not for mine. It was sooo drying and it took me 2 months to get my hair back to normal. I read about yogurt as tradional in the Indian culture. Some people are afraid of not enough dye release, as you can see in my my pictures (in my album) I have no problem with that. It's so much easier and benifitial overal. The yogurt keeps the paste thick, which you need so it won't leak as much. The rinsing is easier also.

The rules and regulations are not as strickt in India and some other countries so you won't always find an (complete) ingredientslist on the boxes.

:thankyou: but no way near PF, WooooW. that's my goal, thick hair no matter what lenght. Again, woooow

^^^Teddy B, i knew there was a reason why a little voice would tell me to not just trust those indian stores nearby!
(i just didn't know it was because of those regulations differences.)

thank goodness, there are websites that specifically deal with relaxed black folks' hair and henna!

ita with the acv....even with taking off buildup, that is a potentially drying substance.

Taz, i'm workin' on it momma! i just got over a "potential setback situation with relaxer-protein overlaod", so i gotta baby my hair, but with the new year, i plan do just do it and henndigo!

T, i agree with Taz---pitchas please!!!! :-)!
