Question:

If you are relaxed and conditioner wash more than 3x per week, can you share your results, experience, and/or opinions about doing so?

I am relaxed (not trying to transition) and I am thinking about co-washing atleast 4x week due to moisture retention. And also because I forget to moisturize my hair daily.:look: I find it easier to just slap some conditioner on my head while in the shower and go about my biz. :yep:

BTW:
I noticed this has been discussed alot, but the darn search feature is tripping. :wallbash:

Hey there, I recently started adding this to my regimen and I LOVE it! I started doing it as a means of finding a way to keep my hair moisturized and to keep myself from doing too many flat ironing styles etc. My hair is SO much healthier, the texture is soft and moisturized, and I havent had ANY breakage at all (I had been seeing some breakage happening with this relaxer stretch I have going on). My new growth is smooth like butta now! lol.

I don't comb it, only on wash days when I DC really, but to tell you the truth I haven't needed it at all because my hair doesn't tangle at all, the shower does a great job detangling.

After my wash I seal with my own concoction of coconut oil mixed with a little coconut milk (soooooooooooooo yummy, my hair LOVES IT). Then I follow with one of two things:

  1. Either braidout and leave to air-dry
  2. Dry in either a single braid or bun (twisted around itself, no ponytail holder), place a scarf over my head to keep the edges down, and air-dry
In the morning I wake-up and either unbraid if a braidout, or just let down my bun and remoisturize, then do an updo adorned with flowers, jewel clips, headbands or scarves and go. It takes me all of 5 mins. My hair has been like a dream since, I'm a few days shy of 8 weeks post relaxer, and I see reaching my 12 week stretch without a problem at all.

I have one wash during the weekend where I use pre-poo with protein -> shampoo -> DC -> moisturize/seal to get rid of build up. That wash is usually followed by a roller set or left to air dry and then flat-ironed straight. My hair has thickened up so much, in fact someone commented on that yesterday, lol. The pics in my siggy are results of co-washing and the Jan folder in my fotki (link below) are my co-washing results. This is now a staple of my regimen. I co-wash w/ Hello Hydration mixed with Castor Oil and Silk Amino Acids.

Thanks for the detailed reply! You rock!Lol.
I am going to try it out.
You look like a 4a/b,is that right?

No prob, and thanks. Yep, I'm 4a/4b all the way. I also have fine hair, but a lot of it, lol.

I've sort of embraced not rocking just the slick straight style all the time and that release in and of itself has helped me to embrace healthier styling and CO-washing. I get more creative with textured looks that don't require heat. I can use heat 1x during the week if I want (on my DC day) and pin curl/dry roller set later in the week if I want a curly style, and hop in the shower and allow my hair to "do what it do" for textured looks the rest of the week, and again the results have been healthier hair.

I co-wash depending on how I feel and what my hair needs, sometimes it's everyday or every other day. I try to get in 2 co-washes a week in addition to my regular full Poo wash.

I'm going to try this because my hair lacks moisture. I am transitioning to texlaxed to cut down damage.

I usually do this. I haven't been consistent with this for the past few weeks due to personal reasons - and my hair definitely reflects that. It looks dull, unhealthy and I'm getting tons of breakage.

I think what's nice about co-washing is that you'll be able to tell pretty quickly if your hair doesn't like it. I think it's so great in the winter and I look forward to my life returning to normal soon so I can get back to my cwashing!!

I co-washed and airdried daily for about 3 1/2 months. During that time, my hair became sooo healthy and moisturized. I didn't notice any extra growth, but I'm not surprised cause my hair grows suuuuper slow.

The reason I stopped is because I'm using mn, and my wet hair HATES oils. Since I wanted to jump on the mn bandwagon, I had to give up having my hair wet all of the time. I'm gonna get back on it after I get some growth from this mn, though :yep:

I gotta try this, Foxie! My challenge is that, as you well know, I am working out about 5 days a week now and I sweat profusely. So I'm upping my conditioner washes and only using poo (Ayurvedics) once a week, especially since it's cold.

The challenge is moisture retention but also what to do with my hair while it air dries. I'm a bit saddened that I always have to wear my hair up as a result but I do hope that I get some growth retention. I guess moisture is the key.

I like your reggie. I've heard so many good things about Hello Hydration, but I'mma finish up my CON Nourishing Conditioner first and try that to see what happens.

Thanks, as always!

P.S. Doc prescribed a multivitamin that is working very, very well!!!:yep:

I just started cowashing a couple days a week this week and DC/ rollersetting once a week. I have been having short broken off hairs everywhere on my bathroom floor and the moisture plus seal hasn't been working to curb the breakage so hopefully this helps stop some of the breakage that I have been having!

um, im not sure if you should do that. im 4b relaxed and ive only co-washed once while i was stretching, and it was only because my newgrowth was getting wild. i would think that you would be over-moisturizing your hair? im not sure. maybe you should try baggying overnight to retain moisture.

I'm not 4b texture, more like 3b/4a and I've been cowashing about 4x a week now that I'm pretty far post. Its been great!! I'll do a poo wash and DC once a week and then start cowashing a few days later. I'll use Suave coconut and airdry overnight. It has cut down on extra manipulation and my hair stays soft and moisturized. I've had to cut back some since its been extra cold here lately...or I'll dry it loose under my hooded :look:.

Umm yeah,about that baggying thing.
When I sleep with a plastic shower cap overnight,my hair is damp in the morning. :wallbash:
My hair "sweats" at night, even when its cold.

I co-wash every other day due to my workout schedule. I'm 4A/B with fine, thick hair. Last TU was 10/12/08 and my hair grows like a weed. I use either Sperm Whale Oil on my ends and scalp with the con sealing it in, Silicon Mix or 12 en 1. I put a plastic bag on it and then sit in the sauna for 1/2 hour. Then I just rinse, rinse, rinse. I leave my hair braided in small braids all over taking them out once a week to make sure that my ng isn't getting tangled.
I'll put a scalp tonic/MN mix on every other day. If I pull the braids back into a bun I'll use Lacio/Lacio with Aveda daily hair cream(name?) mixed 1/1 to keep it neat. That's it. No baggying because I do not like my hair to stay that damp or moisturized. At night I wrap it in a silk scarf or just sleep with a satin case.

I just starting back co-washing and the best solution for me to co-washing is braidouts. I wash my hair and plait it into 4 quarters and go to bed with it damp(leave-in conditioner). I unbraid and fluff in the morning. I am too busy to rollerset right now, but I don't want to bun everyday. It has proven successfully thus far(no major tangles) which is a shock, because my hair will mat/dred in a quick minute...I am using a Jojoba conditioner by Mill Creek. So far so good...my hair is a little past apl.

I do it about 2-3 times a week when I hit around week 10 on my relaxers. It smooths the new growth. I love it!

Co washing is something that I began after reading about it on Southern Tease's blog (she's transitioning too, you know). And I tried it on my hair and I love it. I'm a relaxer stretcher so I need something to keep my hair very moisturized and this was it. My new growth is so unbelievably soft, that I'm really liking it more than my relaxer hair and it so makes me wanna go natural.

I make sure to saturate my hair and NG in condish (I use a tint applicator brush to make sure I get everything. I do this on dry hair first and use the steam turban method (plastic cap, warm damp towel, then another plastic cap on top of that) and let that sit for 15 to 30 mins... (this loosens the new growth, detangles the hair so you don't really have to, softens, adds strength and moisture). After I rinse, I lightly detangle under the shower, then I do a final rinse with my condish. I drench my hair in condish again and gather my hair into a pony with my hands, I rinse my hair really well and place into a ponytail holder (not a tight one, but a secure one.) I use a dime size amount of coconut oil and work that thru the ponytail and add castor oil to the rest of my hair. I let that air dry with a satin scarf. Baggy the ponytail (when it's 90% dry) and throw on a phonypony if I have to leave the house. My hair always stays soft, supple and moisturized and my hair doesn't tangle at all anymore. If I'm not leaving the house, I just braid my ponytail, let it air dry and unbraid it for a cute pony braidout that I can just walk around the house with. I got thru my 12 week stretch no prob (and could've went alot longer). My hair has been thriving and like you said, I have no use for a convential moisturizer anymore. Just my water and coconut oil do the trick.

lol, yep, thats happened to me too and thats why i dont use that method anymore. someone here had wrote how they did a showercap baggy, but put a little hole in the front so that any perspiration can go out and the hair wont be wet. i only baggy my ends though and i moisturize my newgrowth by spraying a leave in conditioner on first ,and then adding my hair lotion.

I co-wash every other day and my hair loves it. Its especially great when I have a lot of NG, cause that's the only time I can get it under control. I usually either do the scarf method at night or wet bun and leave it up for a day until the next wash day. Incorporating this into my routine definitely helped me stretch and also helped me retain length - my hair is the longest its ever been.

I used to co-wash heavy when I first started coming to hairboards and it helped a lot when I was in Brazil. I dont know if its because my hair has gotten longer or if its because I'm forgetting some product. I used to just comb some conditioner in (Creme of Nature!) and it would make my hair feel nice and I'd just walk out the door. Now I look like a Chia pet so I break out the flat iron.

Hello, I've been doing this since 2003 and I love co-washing. I have moved to a colder climate so I cannot co-wash every single day. I used to do it in the morning and then leave home because I felt "fresh" but I try not to do the wet bun thing too much anymore because I am afraid of breakage.

After co-washing at night, sometimes I braid my hair in four pigtails. Wake up, loosen up the pigtails and then put my hair in a bun. Oh, I also love using conditioner as a leave-in. My favorites are Suave and V05. Herbal Essences has some good ones too and Pantene is cool, sometimes (don't like cones too much anymore).

Has anyone found that condish washing several times during the week takes the relaxer out of your hair? When I went to get a touch up after about 1 month of daily condish washing(2 months post relaxer), the stylist told me that I needed a virgin relaxer b/c the daily water on my hair had stripped my hair of the relaxer..? (My hair was short at the time, back last summer) So I'm wondering if anyone has found this to be true?

Your stylist lied to you. There is no such thing as "striping" a relaxer because it is a chemical process. You cannot undo it, and you certainly can't undo it with regular water.

Can someone request a really good CW conditioner?

I tried V05 Moisture Milks and really liked it. But then I tried Suave Naturals conditioners and it was a WRAP! I love me some Suave! My favorites are Tropical Coconut, Aloe Vera and Waterlily and Ocean Breeze

Girl, you've been here long enough to know not to believe such ignorance! :spank:

There is no way that water of all things can take a relaxer out of your hair. A relaxer is permanant, NOTHING can take it out. Co-washing probably increased your growth, so you had more newgrowth than usual. Maybe that's what made your idiot stylist think the relaxer was stripped out of your hair

Boy, the foolish things these stylists come up with
