How can you tell if shampoos are alkaline?
* You can do a pH test with a strip [anything higher than a 7 is alkaline]. * Check for Sodium Laureth Sulfate [alkaline-based surfactant] in the shampoo’s ingredient list. * Physical: Alkaline causes the cuticle layer of the hair to swell, feel rough and appear dull.
How detrimental is alkaline to the hair:
Alkaline breaks down the bonds that hold the hair shaft together and can cause permanent damage. Alkaline shampoos also strip the hair’s natural oils, cause dehydration and lead to porous, fragile hair.
