quick question for daily co-washers

If you co-wash everyday or atleast several days a week do you add all of your leave-ins everytime? Cause that seems like a waste of product to me and I really wanna get into the whole co-washing thing this summer but not if imma go broke buying more products in the process.

So could you please help me and answer that and tell me what(if any) leave ins you do use

I used to WNG/CW everyday and I never used a leave-in. However, I also always reached a point of dry brittle hair that would leave me with awful damage/breakage. I would recommend using some leave-in. From my experience, just washing and going is not a good idea.

Maybe using or leaving in a bit of your instant conditioner will help too, if you're concerned about wasting product.

ETA: I use (read: LOVE) Parnevu T-Tree Leave-in Conditioner whether I CW or not, it gives my scalp a nice tingle :).

Another that I love is Hawaiian Silky 14-in-1 - this stuff is super. I use this for braids, WNG, and baggying. I love it!

Some I just have around the house:

CON Lemongrass and Rosemary Leave-in conditioner cream - it didn't give the same shine as Parnevu, but it smells nice (probably won't buy again).

Elasta QP H-Two, I usually use this when I'm braiding my hair, to keep the hair moist. I've never used this for a WNG. I don't think it would do much.

Infusium moisturizing leave-in. I remember using this stuff as a relaxed head and my hair got so healthy and strong. I'm trying again as a natural, and I'm not so sure that anything is happening...:(

Good luck, HTH! :)

I WNG daily and cowash daily & it keeps my hair growing/ retaining. I leave some full strength condish in. There are great cheapie cons u can use like the Herbal Essences line or Garnier Fructis or Suave Moisturizing to keep the cost down. I don't buy "leave-in" con, I just use some regular.

Like what Diva Esq said, use cheap stuff on co wash day. You could even use your cheapie conditioner as a leave in too. Vo5 makes a decent leave in, even HE long term relationship conditioner, its almost the same ingredients as the leave in... just probably more concentrated.. (who knows) ... which you probably wouldn't have to do since the leave in it self is dirt cheap.

It never occured to me to just leave some of the cheapie co-wash conditioner in my hair

I will try that tomorrow thank u all so much!

Good question. This one stumps me, too. I started rinsing my hair with just water in the shower for about a month now and my gosh! my hair feels like butter all week. Even the ends!

I don't even moisturize and seal anymore, so I know that daily co-washing would most likely eliminate the need for leave-ins. (I have 4a natural hair. And my ends were straight crispy before!)

Also, I love the idea of just using regular condish as a leave-in. Makes sense to me. :yep:

Im actually relaxed but Im trying to get like you and wet my hair and probably bun everyday this summer. It just seemed dumb to add product to my hair daily if i was just gonna rinse it out the next day anyway and while living in Germany all of my products I ordered off the internet so I was wondering how yall were doing it. so thanks!

Two questions to you ladies that co-wash frequently,

1) How long do you spend washing your hair and

2) What is a typical co-wash frequently regimen?

i.e just co-wash twice same product or different products then done. co-wash and do a porosity control and ACV rinse.

TIA!

I cowash anywhere from 2-5 times a week, it all depends on how I feel. If I'm cowashing frequently I tend to switch up each time. I use my silken child everytime, but I switch up between my HV Whipped ends and HE LTR.

I always use my leave-ins. Spare the product and spoil the hair. To me, it is better to suffer the small expense of having to buy leave-ins more frequently, than suffer the greater expense of having to buy specialized products, or even cut off length, to treat damage.

1) I soak my hair thoroughly, apply enough conditioner to my hair and scalp to saturate, then briefly massage the conditioner into my scalp before washing. I let the water course through my hair for a bit longer to detangle lightly, and then squeeze my hair to remove excess water before applying my leave-ins.

2) I used to co-wash daily, but I am starting a period of co-washing less frequently. My regimen is very low manipulation and I suspect that the daily co-washing is more manipulation than is necessary for the last 8 inches of my hair, which are very delicate (See my thread on Ouidad for the explanation). I am going to start co-washing on Mondays, applying my leave-ins, and then misting my hair with water on the rest of the days. I started this past week and I found that my hair needed to be co-washed after three days. So, maybe I will become a twice weekly co-washer.

I only co-wash during my showers and it takes me 30 minutes to complete the shower. Not sure how long it actually takes to tend to my hair.

I get in, soak my hair, slather in some conditioner (if i'm using a conditioner with no cones, i'll focus it on my scalp), let it sit while I continue my shower, then rinse out. Then I t-shirt dry and then apply my oils and style.

I co-wash my hair everyday. It takes about 25 minutes for the whole shower. Then I leave like a dime-sized amt of the conditioner in there. I put shea butter or oil on it when I get out of the shower.

Thanks for your responses. Last week I tried co-washing 2 times but found I was taking the same amount of time, so I am thinking maybe I am doing too much.

1st Co-wash
I would co-wash, jump out and put aphogee 2 mins, rinse, jump out and DC conditioner for 30 min, then rinse. Add my leave ins. Airdry

2nd Co-wash
Would co-wash rinse twice and then put porosity control and rinse. Add my leave ins. Roller set then silk wrap.

I am 8 week post.

Sunday I want to co-wash again. Any suggestions?

Deep conditioning is not part of co-washing, as I understand it. Co-washing is literally just that: Washing your hair with conditioner. And that's it.

I co-wash daily while I'm in the shower. I'm not sure how long the process takes. I get in the shower, wet may hair, put in some cheap conditioner (Aussie Moist, V05, HE, etc.), put a plastic cap on my head and continue with my shower. When I'm done I rinse the conditioner out and wrap my hair in a towel made for curly hair (it's just like a t-shirt). I currently use leave-in conditioner, but it's really because I'm trying to use it up (Aphogee Leave-In), I'm not going to buy anymore while I'm co-washing daily. I put some shea butter on my hair and spray the ends with S-Curl No Drip activator and put it in a bun. My hair stays moisturized all day.

Once I put that Aphogee into my hair I was afraid not to put any conditioner on it afterwards. Hum...

So you ladies just CW and rinse then do your leave ins? It looks I am over complicating it. What about PC or ACV rinses? I just started this.

Miss Stress I hope I did not high jack your thread!

There is no need to use Aphogee daily, and I do not believe it is suitable for co-washing. I use thin, runny cheapies to co-wash: V05, Suave, and other conditioners that rinse out easily. When I want, I use a thicker conditioner on my ends (But again, not a specialized one; just one that is meant for daily use).

The function of co-washing is the same as shampooing: Cleaning the hair. One just replaces shampoo with conditioner because conditioner is less drying and thus, more suitable for daily use. You do not want a conditioner that is too thick or else it can lead to build up and dulling of your hair. I hope these helps. I know these techniques can be confusing in the beginning. :)

My co-wash conditioner I used was Curls Coconut Sublime and it is thick. I haven't used aphogee 2 min for a long time so decided I would use it after one of my co-wash. I think I will leave the Aphogee treatment for end of week wash and thanks for the info about using a less thick conditioner.

I just started co-washing at least 3x a week and my hair is loving me for it. I pre-mix a large tupper-ware container full of cheapie conditioner (Suave, shea something) olive oil and honey. I slather that on before I jump in the shower. I rinse that out and add a tiny bit of a conditioner, rinse and then add a cheapie condish to leave in. I deep condition and use my steamer once a week or so but I use a quality conditioner for that. I tried Skala for the first time today and that stuff is wonderful!!....and only a buck!!

WHERE DID YOU FIND A TOWEL FOR CURLY HAIR???? I SOOOOO NEED THAT! Towels and turbie twists make my natural hair frizz.

The purpose of co-washing is to help moisturize the hair. Depending on the type of products you use regularly, washing with shampoo and/or clarifying may still be necessary.

I find that we are both right in that for me, the purpose is both cleansing and moisture: Co-washing is a way to cleanse my hair without stripping it of moisture. However, for me, the preeminent purpose of co-washing is cleansing, because applying leave-in conditioners and deep conditioning are my primary ways of moisturizing, and co-washing does not compare to those methods.

I do not ever use shampoo (I can count on one hand and have fingers left how many times I have used it in the past few years) because I realized long ago that it was not conducive to retaining my hair's moisture and preventing tangling.
