And why?

ETA: If you dont get either, please indicate how you leave with your hair.

I used to get a full blow out. I did this for like 2 years. But over time it was thinning and drying out my hair...... And my ends were tore up. So now I just get the roots blown out.

Now i realize that i actually PREFER just the roots blown out, because it leaves my hair way fuller, with tons of body and bounce! I only get the roots blown out to get rid of that awful roller dent. I must admit, sometimes i miss that silky, bone straight look of the blowout......... but giving that up was a small sacrafice to salvage the health of my hair.

Now i only get a full blow out once every 3 months, to stretch my hair in order to take my progress pictures.

My first trip to a "Dominican Salon" was a few weeks ago and I got a full blow out. I loved it! It looked really nice and silky, however, I have thin hair as it is so I don't think I will continue getting full blowouts. I don't think I will frequent them that much anyway, but when I do, I'll just get my roots blown out.

I get roots only, cause I like my hair to have bounce and curls. I like big hair, straight doesn't look well on me.

Yeah, fine/thin hair does NOT jive well with those blowouts. If my hair was thicker and stronger i might treat myself to them more often.... but my hair is not strong enough to tolerate all that.

I get roots only..
I just don't think my hair is heavy enough to withstand all that heat. I cringe sometimes to see people who don't have really thick hair get thier hair blown from roots to tip. If you get a rollerset the remainder of your strands should be silky straight. When I ask for roots only, they still sometimes find a way to somewhat blow the entire length of the hair :ohwell: .

I usually tell them 'not too straight', so they may put a little heat on the rest of the hair, but its still bouncy and full.

When I treat myself, I only get the roots blown. I CRINGE at the thought of all of that heat on my ends and a constant rolling brush on them. I am so anal when it comes to any handling my precious ends..I treat them like grandma!

When I was relaxed I wouldn't do the blowdryer..and if I needed a touchup I would only do the roots. Now that I don't have a relaxer the rare occasions that I do go I let them blowdry my entire head

It depends on what stage I am post relaxer. If I'm freshly relaxed I don't allow them to put heat at all. I just have the rollers taken out and then I have then wrap my hair. (I keep a hat in my bag for this when I leave the salon). Several weeks post then I have the roots blown only. Like you I like the bounce from the roller set. If it's time for a touch-up and I'm stretching then I have them do a full blow out (but this is like every 3 weeks or so nothing frequent).

All of the salons I've been to just ask if I want it curly or straight. I always say curly, and it just so happens that they only blow the roots out with the curly style. But the stylist I go to now, doesn't ask, so I have to specifically tell her. My only reason for not having it blown straight was because I wanted more bounce, and then I learned (via LHCF) that it wasn't that healthy for the ends.

I've never had a Dominican blow out so I have some questions. Do they still use the brush when they blow the roots only? Do they just twirl the brush on the ng only but don't pull it the length of the curled hair. Isn't this direct heat that's really damaging? A brush and a blow dryer directly on my hair just scares me.

Thats cool, because at my salon they really dont ask. The automatic/default is to just blow it out..... because thats how most Brooklyn girls like it. So i have to specify that i want the roots ONLY. But by now they know me, and they know the dizz-eal. :)

Well Im not sure about others, but when they blow out my roots, they are using a small-toothed comb. They pull the roots taut with the comb, and run heat over it. So yes, essentially, it is direct heat.... but not too the ends of my hair, which is the most fragile part.

Thanks Kinikakes for making that clear. I never would have thought they used a small comb. I've been wondering the entire while how that would be done with a brush. Well, your hair is beautiful and I have picked up part of your regimen and ordered the same Dominican products you use. I just printed your "henna experience" and have been studying it trying to get the nerve up to do one.

I get my roots blown out only using either a fine tooth comb, a round brush, or a regular vented brush depending on the stylist or salon. I have thick, coarse hair which can withstand the full blowout but I have been using this technique for over a year and have minimal split ends and zero breakage as compared to the full blowout technique.

How often do you go?

Kini - I let my people in BK use the brush on my roots OCCASIONALLY. However, as you said, most chicks in there are getting the whole head fried to the ends. I actually haven't been going because I've been air drying and wearing a fall on the weekends when I'm going out. I think that "fire spittin dryer" is damaging even if only used on the roots. Just my opinion.

Girl you are so right, and i agree with you. Heat is heat, no matter where or how it is applied. Chile, i am slowly trying to wean myself OFF of getting the roots blown out!!! :ohwell:

But it just looks sooo darn GOOOOOOODDDD!!!!!!!!!! *sigh* :(

If they only blow the roots, what happens to the rest of the wet hair. Is the hair roller set then the roots blown. I've never had one so how does it work. Do they flat iron the remaining hair?

I go as needed, when I have a special event or when I just want to wear my hair straight. Lately, it's been every week, or biweekly. In the interim I rock wash and gos.

They set your hair on large size roller and sit you under a hooded dryer, after the hair is dry they blow out the roots to remove the roller dents, or straighten the new growth if you have any. I have them wrap the hair with pins afterward so the set will fall nicely after it's unwrapped.

This is me also. If I'm freshly relaxed or just a few weeks post, I just let them wrap it (doobie) after taking out the rollers. If I'm several weeks post and that NG is kicking, I'll ask for roots only and then wrap. I've only gotten full blowouts when I was going out or for my graduation. In the many years I've been going to them, I've only had a full blowout maybe 4-5 times.

Your hair looks great! How often do you go to the Dominican salon. I also have fine 4a/b hair, that is similar to yours (but not quite as long) (I'm just tipping on bra-strap)

Thanks girl!!!!!!!!!! :D I go once a week..... but i only get the roots blown out.

I get a full blowout, once every 3 months, in order to take my Progress Pics (because this shows the full length). So in all my Progress Pics in my Fokti, that is a blowout. But yeah, on a regular weekly basis, my hair is fuller with more body, and looks a lot shorter (cuz it hasnt been blown out)

Wow! I've never seen that before. Sounds like it might be a lot less damaging than that brush. Next time I'm in NY, I may have to check them out. Where exactly are they located?

I couldnt vote.

I only go to the salon for a relaxer once every 3 months and I dont let them do nothing but rollerset me. I'm on a no direct heat challenge.

In the mean time, I take care ofmy hair

I go for touch-ups only now, used to go every two weeks for wash/set. No blow-outs at all. I'm too new at the hair growing/retention process to trust the application of direct heat as yet. Large rollers are removed, get a little ORS olive oil spray, no comb-out, scarf and leave.

I agree with you on this, I love the blowout but it is so hot I can hardly stand it, I only get roots, but I'm taking a break for now and doing my hair myself, trying henna and loving it, It's the one think that makes me want to do my own hair so I can try a new mix

I've never gotten a blow out from then for this reason. But If I do I will only get the roots done because I don't like the straight hair look on me.
