Question for ALL Dusters....

Please ladies, how do you decide when dusting is not enough- like further action needs to be taken?
OK for an example, I have just started dusting my hair a couple of weeks ago and I am now rocking a twistout from my twists and my ends looked a little thin and scraggly. So I pull out my scissors and on almost every group of strands I pull I feel a few knots. I get to dusting and I am finding individual strands with 3 tree branch splits and 2 knots in a row. AND I am still dusting as I type. This is scary, is it time for a trim?
And if so should I trim myself because there is NO ONE I can trust after a salon mishap I had in January of this year.

I'm still learning so please forgive me, but what is dusting?

thnx

I dust until my ends are smooth and tangle free. That might take days of daily dusting. When they don't tangle, anymore than the rest of my hair, I stop. If they are see-thru I trim a bit (.5 - 1.5in).

this is what I do, as well. It helps me avoiding cutting too much.

I think I read in another post that the scissors you use can affect your split ends. If they aren't hair scissors or if they're dull, they can result in split ends.

Thanks for the responses!! I just bought these pair of scissors recently from sallys so I don't think that they are already dull....

My splits are outrageous! but if I must trim properly I will probably have to straighten my hair and I don't want any heat right now....

this will be my last cry for help :(

If you've been dusting and it's not helping you might need to trim. I would start small. When I say small I mean a 1/4 of inch. Then I'd dust again, everyday for 20 minutes for a week. I do a different section of hair each time until I get 'em all. If it still doesn't improve trim another 1/4 inch. Just my 2 cents.

Would I need to use heat and straighten in order to trim properly, because I've been trying to stay away from heat?

I was searching through my hair today to try a do some dusting, and I hardly saw any splits, but my hair is sort of uneven in the back and looks like I need a trim. What's the best way to trim?

Oh sorry. I rollerset or airdry overnight and blowdry on low before trimming. The hair needs to be majority straight. It doesn't have to be completely straight.
