(How) do you ask a stylist for a "dusting"?

OK this whole topic of "dusting" is new to me--I understand it's just cutting off a VERRRRRRRRRRRRY little bit of hair for maintenance to prevent future disasters, no? LOL.

Do people actually ask stylists to "dust" and do they actually comply?? Or are they doing it themselves? If the former, how do you ask so that you make sure they really just DUST instead of trying to even out every strand of your hair.

I'm a natural btw and it's been about four months since I had a trim....my ends look OK I guess--I have a few knots and split ends here and there and try to just cut them off myself but I am feeling like I should get this dusting thing I keep hearing about. :):)

ask the stylist to take off 1/4 in or better yet bring a small ruler and show her and 1/8 of an inch i think that counts as a dusting.

i cant think of anyone on here that has a stylist dust them though, i'm natural and i dust myself and my transitioning daughter

I ask for 1/8 to 1/4 of inch off and then hold out my hand to catch the "cuttings" in order to SEE what's actually being cut off. I make it crystal clear that i do not want a cut, just a light light trim and then what like a hawk . . .

I go to hair cuttery . . .

Make sure is crystal clear and then watch them. You really need someone trust worthy and who know you mean what you say. Say it seveal times just explain you are retaining you length and do not want much. I tell my hairdresser I want a "sliver" and the first time I said this she said what, what is that. And I explained. Me and her have very good understanding. She knows I do not want any sciossors near my head unless I request it.

I just say, "Dust my ends"! I said that to a hairdresser once though and she laughed and mocked me to her customers. She said, "Dusting is NOT a hair term"! Where did you get that from. I said, when is the last time you went to school then!?!!! She continued to laugh, so I printed out lots of articles on "dusting" and gave them to her! She looked stupid!

I dust myself. It's hard to get into that kind of nitty-gritty measurements without making someone feel incompentent so I do it myself with the bathroom mirror, medicine cabinet mirror open and another handheld mirror. I get clips to section my hair and I take my time to go thru and clip the ends with a pair of scissors I got at Sally's saved just for cutting hair. Otherwise, I would be sweating in the stylist's chair, and that's not worth the aggravation or the stress.

See that would annoy me lol. I'm glad you printed out the articles for her.
Out of curiosity--was your hair straightened when you got the dusting? :)

Thanks all for the replies and suggestions!
