I am trying to come up with a regimen for my braids. I want to do crown and glory method for a year. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had an opinion of whether I should do a strong protein treatment before I get my hair braided or after I take my braids out.

Thanks ladies, the more I think about it the more doing it before and after makes the most since. My only problem is, I don't know where I am going to fit all my mild protein treatments in, I'm sure I won't need them if I'm using the aphogee every eight weeks.

what's a good protein reconstructor to use after having braid extensions for 2 months. should i use a mild, or heavy protein reconstructor? My hair is not damaged and i keep it pretty healthy while in the braids.

I say both. I have conrows and I did a reconstructor treatment the day before I got the braids and I also mixed the 2 minute aphogee recon in my diluted conditioner bottle and use it once a week when I wash my braids. I'll be taking mine out this weekend and will do another recon along with my deep con.

I cornrow or braid my hair every two weeks after I began the Crown & Glory Braid Regimen about three months ago (http://www.growafrohairlong.com/braidreg.html). I do a reconstructive protien conditioner once a month and I deep condition each time I take the braids or cornrows out. I only use the protein and DCs on my natural hair after I take the braids out (unless I do not use hair extenstions then I DC in the braids but still on my natural hair).

Natural vs. Chemically Treated
Natural hair needs fewer external protein treatments than relaxed or chemically processed hair because natural hair has not had its protein bonds altered from chemical applications. Too much protein will harm the hair and cause it to break off which is more of a caution for chemically treated hair; excessive protein will harden the hair, dry it out and it will eventually break. I learned that from reading and from two of my stylists. I have one for when I'm relaxed and one for when I'm natural.

Every one on hair borads knows that we all have to find what works for our individual hair because what is true for one is not true for all. My general suggestion for you is to start slow until you find the protein balance that works well for you just be cautious of overdoing it. :D

ETA: I also conditioner rinse my braids/cornrows almost daily because I exercise daily and I don't let the excreted salts in the perspiration sit in my hair as it can have a drying effect. If I can't co-rinse, I will just rinse with plain water and air dry.

I am one of those people who can use lots and lots of protein with no adverse effects. So when I use to wear braids I would use a protein treat before and after. My hair thrives on protein. :drunk:
