This may sound silly, but, I have real problems with even the loosest buns or braids due to dull headaches becoming full-blown migraines.
Does anyone experience this?

This is not silly. This is the reason why many people don't bun at all and why there are specialty hair accessories that keep hold the hair up without a lot of tension like Goody Spin Pins, Flexi 8 Clips, Hair Sticks, and more.

I developed a headache this morning from a too-tight bun and had to loosen my hair completely to relieve the tension.

I sometimes French braid my hair and pin the tail under. I don't braid too tightly. This is one of my favorite protective styles because I don't have to use anything to hold my hair and there's no tension. I also like to use my Ficcare clip, but that purchase was a special treat to myself...they are expensive.

yes...french braid works well for me. also half wigs. i put my hair in two loose plaits and pin them up. put on a half wig and a loose satin head band.

this not silly at all Op, i get serious headache when i do socks bun!!:perplexed
the only type of bun that works for me are southern tease, or just loosing secure hair with hair sticks!

OMG! I had a weave put in yesterday first she braided my hair which was ok, but after she started to weave in the hair I mention to the stylist oh I am a little tender headed. I did not noticed any pain except I had an instant face lift I had cat eyes I was so impressed that I looked younger I failed to realize any tightness and did not feel anything or pain until I got home. My husband said oh my goodness what happen? I said what he said your hair looks great but how did you get cat eyes? heeeeeeeeeeeeeee 2:00 in the AM I was putting everything in my hair to loosen the braid then proceeded to cut still feel tightness but not as bad.

OP you are soooo not alone. I had to experiment with bands, clips, and various hair candy because it's easy for me to get a migraine. I can't tie my scarves tight because I'll get a migraine or the friction will snatch out my hairline, regardless of the fabric. My go to styles for the time being are loose twists worn under wigs and loose buns for my phony ponies.

Glad I'm not alone. I got a migraine today from last night's bantu knots (never doing that again), and it was a bad one. I was sick to my stomach several times.

I suffer from migraines too. I do a lot of buns but I keep the scrunchie as loose as I can. I can't do too many headbands though. I just rediscovered the banana clip and will begin to experiment. I am natural and it takes a lot to get all of my hair in a bun. I just gave up on a super sleek look.:nono:

I remember being ill in the hospital in 1995, and I had to have my mom take out my braids right then because I couldn't stand the tension in my head. And I can't wear tight buns etc, the same thing happens to me, Iluvsmuhgrass

I use large octopus clips instead of bunning. The clips are strong enough to hold my thick hair without putting tension on my edges and scalp. I'm sure the clips can be found anywhere, but I purchased mine at the 99 cent store.

I sometimes get headaches from my scarf.

This has been happening to me since my pregnancy started. I use a bonnet that has a thick band instead of the elastic. My hair is too short to bun as I have a "top of ear" length hair cut. My style doesnt keep as well, but I can deal with that vs the alternative which is waking up with migraines.

OP I am so glad you made this thread. Everything you ladies have stated I have experience and I still do. I have only been wearing 2 french braids underneath my wigs. I don't use all my wig clips b/c they can cause me to get a migraine. I plan on starting to wear bantu knot outs on occasions.

There are spots on your scalp that when pressure is put there it can help you or hurt you.

I'm the QUEEN of this. That's why I can't wrap my hair, I can't do buns anymore at night, and the most comfortable style for me to sleep in is one or two french braids.

Don't let me have a sinus headache I don't want anything touching my head. Although this is going to sound sooo weird but there are certain spots on the front of my head that I can press down on or pull my hair up in a certain way and it temporarily relieves the pressure.

This is true. I massage my headaches away by rubbing my temples or the back of my neck. Sometimes I can feel the tension in my veins when I massage.
