As my hair gets longer I keep thinking of so many styles that i could be doing.
At times I feel like I'm missing out but I'm so determine to get to MBL that i just deal with this feeling.

So all you bunner, C & G and other PS wearers do you feel like you are missing out.
How do you get over this feeling.

Hey Soror! While I admit that protective styles do their part, I think at some point it just drives you mad if you have no variation. Stay with it though if you find them helpful.

The only time I feel "left out" is when I am not in braids and I just wear my natural hair with no heat. Sometimes I want to straighten my hair to switch things up especially since I know I am almost shoulder length.

I feel like that sometimes. I just don't feel as cute with my hair pulled back. I wore my hair out last weekend and it was so refreshing.

Yah, I get tired of wearing protective styles but then I remember that the reason why my hair is growing so fast is because I'm protecting my ends. The last time I did my touch up which was 3 weeks ago. I was so excited about how long it got that I wanted to wear my hair down but then I snapped back into protective style mode and remembered why I am wearing ps and soon I will be able to wear my hair down and enjoy it but I'm still going to do ps 4 days out of the week once I'm done with all these challenges.

Not at all, my protective styles are all messy, bedhead pinned up rollersets or pincurls that look cute and sexy. I always leave face framing curls or tendrils (as long as they are not long enough to rub up on my clothes. My hair is always wild and curly even though it's still being protected, I love it and have been getting compliments on some of my styles lately.:yep:

yep - I am! I was just in the beauty supply today lookin for a fall to switch things up a bit. I'm tired of bunning. i'm 5 weeks post with 5 weeks of bunning. How boring.

what gets me this way is I'm a C & G junkie.
I keep my box braids in for 5--- 7 months.
When it's time to redo my braids is when this feeling kicks in.
I want to see where my hair will fall on my back.
I want to swing my head back and fourth.
I want to cut some of it.

Then i think well if it's this long now, how long will it be when it's time to take them out. Thats when i go fotki hunting:lol:

I'm feeling this way right now as i redo my braids but i know i can waite for June.

I have been feeling like that lately, So I gave myself some times to enjoy my hair down and out. I still baggie my ends at night, and I will go back to protective styling when I'm done having fun:)

Same here! Although I really like curly updo's so I may do a form of protective styling without being so restricted to hiding my ends.

Absolutely! I recently retired from the daily protective style for this very reason. I've been liberated. :D

I broke out of my shell in October and I've loved every minute. I still do quasi-protective styles. My favorites are WnGs that shrink above my shoulders, high-ponies, and my UPA clip. But when the mood strikes me to wear it straight and down I go for it. :yep:

During the first 6 months or so here on LHCF, it was important for me to wear protective styles, not just for length (which was not my focus) but for my hair's health that I was restoring. I had major heat damage and more and didn't want to cut it.

Plus, for the first time I learned how to do protective styles like my braided buns, French Twists and other updos. I learned how to do braidouts. Soon, I had a few styles that looked good on me and that I could rotate as my hair was healing. I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything--I was always getting compliments on my protective styles. :)

Now, I do enjoy wearing my hair out and I'm experimenting with rollersets, pin curl sets and perhaps wrapping one of these days. When I wear my protective styles, it's because they look very good on me. ;)

I choose not to miss out on anything in my life. Life is to be enjoyed.

I feel like that sometimes too but i want my hair to be healthier first before i start wearing it out. I did gain some length but now i want my hair to be really strong so i will protect it for like another couple of months and then we'll see where it goes from there.

I feel the same way. I wear protective styles 90% of the time. I try to switch them up some. I'll probably wear my hair out more late Spring or early Summer when it gets longer and stronger.

I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

My buns are very convenient. I started wearing them to keep my hair up and out of my way while I took care of babies who pulled hair, worked in the garden, cooked, ect... My days are full of messy stuff and I don't like my hair falling into a pot of marinara sauce or down into the mud while I'm digging.

I do enjoy taking my hair down to see the length and play with it. Maybe if I didn't have so many small children or I wasn't always cooking and cleaning and stuff then I'd wear my hair down more often. I'm not unhappy though.

I love the surprise on people's faces when I do take my hair down.:) I met with one of our long standing clients last week and I wore my hair down and curly, he's only seen me with my hair in a bun previously and the look on his face was so funny when I walked in and he saw my hair.

Im tired. Sick and tired at that. I constantly wear buns. C O N S T A N T L Y!!! Its annoying... But... I have too keep going until April Fools. So... It should be worth it. Im going to put in braids between this weekend and next so, That should help take the frustration away I guess.

Not really, since i wear my hair out on the weekends. Thats kinda like my "treat," if you will. So its buns Sun-Thurs, then hair down Fri and Sat. So I dont feel overly stifled by protective styles.

I don't feel like I'm missing out but then I don't bun exclusively. I've found the more I've learned about haircare the more I just want to leave it alone. I'm most successful at that when it's up and away.;)

I've never been an exclusive bunner and I've done pretty well. Free yourself, girl!:lachen:

I almost prefering wearing my hair tucked away. Living in a big city, I'm always walking, catching a bus, or riding a train so loose hair gets "touched" on crowded transport, windblown, wet, caught in handbag straps, etc. Sometimes I let my hair down when I reach my destination though.

I give myself a two week break in between protective styles and I plan on changing up my protective style so for now, I don't feel cheated and since I am trying to do this for the year I know it will end sooner than I thought.

ITA!!! I find that the longer my hair gets, the more it gets caught/trapped in things, and that is very annoying and frustrating! The bun feels secure and i am not worried about any destructive elements getting to it. So i actually dont mind bunning throughout the week. I have peace of mind, if nothing else.

I agree with you on the hair getting caught as it gets longer. I also think that where you live has a lot to do with how practical it is to wear your hair out frequently. If you experience all the seasons with harsh winters, then I can see it being a major issue. In southern California,we don't have such extremes.

Kinikakes I like this schedule you have. I may have to try this. I don't like going out w/my hubby and feeling shabby because my hair is up in a bun or under a headwrap. I think I 'll start wearing it out on weekends too.

I'm not that good at wearing my hair down, constantly trying to keep it "bumped" under looking decent. I have the kind of hair that sticks up, always looks windblown unless it is freshly flat-ironed. So in my protective style, which is a claw clip or a pinned up twist, I look more "decent" on a daily basis.

I do sometimes feel like I'm missing out but I moreso feel bored. I have to figure out another way. Tonight I'm going to practice WnGs though. Maybe that will work for me?:look:

ITA! I am finally at a point where I am enjoying my hair. The only time I am consistant with protective styling is during the winter. MA is cold and protective styles save my hair. When it starts to wam up I am diligent with moisturizing and wear my hair out more.

No, not at all. I wear buns, phony ponies, wigs, twist, and braids. Actually, PS was my norm before LHCF. To dress up my buns, I add hair toys such as flowers, pins, bun covers, chinese sticks, etc. :D
