Hi ladies with dreads, :D
What products do you buy?

I'm not thinking about starting dreads, I'm buying products for a friend who lives abroad and i wanted to get your input before I spend 'bad' money. :perplexed

Thanks a lot!

For the rare times that I use commercial products I've found that you can't go wrong with the Jamaican Mango and Lime line.

Any Dr. Bronner's soap is great for a shampoo and for me ACV rinses make the best "conditioner."

Hope this helps! ... :)

Other lockers may give other advice, but I don't believe in loc butters. Over time they build up in the strands of the locs and make your hair dull, stiff, and hard. No matter how much you shampoo or clarify it's really hard to remove butters. Light product application is best when dealing with locs.

I had locks for a number of years and the only products that I used were Aubrey Organics Island Naturals Shampoo and Kemi Oyl. Less is definitely more with locks.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar for clarifying. (Some folks use a can of beer at every wash to keep build-up at bay...i.e. 1st wash, rinse with beer, second wash).

2. A good quality shampoo. A lot of folks with locs swear by Bronners Peppermint Castile Soap so that's a thought. I suggest JASON shampoos or Aubrey Organics. Aveda Sap Moss is good too.

3. A light oil to massage into scalp and locks. (Olive oil or coconut oilwith a little citrus essential oil (lime, lemon, lemongrass, grapefruit, etc. or a combo. Maybe a few drops of rosemary oil.) There are some good blends as well.

4. If you're palmrolling or fingertwisting, Aloe vera gel mixed with a teeny bit of oil in #3 and a few scant drops of honey.

5. Clips if palmrolling or fingertwisting. I strongly suggest the single pronged ones.

That's about it.
BTW, I don't have locs (almost did..changed my mind for the 100th time) BUT I did groom locs the last couple of years that I lived in L.A. All my clients were satisfied with their locs, their scalp, and this is the process I used etc.

When I was loced I used Aveda Clove Shampoo and Conditioner. It was good for me because it did not lead to build up and did a good job of cleanising and conditioning my locs. I stayed away from anything creamy cause of possible buildup.

On a daily basis (or every other day) I would add a little water and some oil to my locs. I did this especially after I washed to keep dryness at bay. At the time I used a product called Full of Locks Hair oil. I loved it. I don't think it's made anymore-but there probably is something comparable like Carol's daughter or kera care hair oil or something. The oil was light, had quality ingredients and smelled nice.

For twisting I never used the same thing and I did not twist all the time. Sometimes my hairstylist would use a moisturizing conditioning gel that you can find at the BSS. I used to twist w/oil and Aloe vera gel mixed together (I tried to stay away from beeswax because of build up). I hope this helps. also try going to nappturality for more info.

ITA-Less is def. the way to go.

I was actually told that Jamaican Mango and Lime is the worst:ohwell: My friend said once she foud out what it does to you hair she threw it out...this is just one POV of course.

I would go to nappturality.com since they have a whole sub-forum dedicated to locs :)

Hello,

My current reggie is posted in my signature, but I've been using Creme of Nature Products lately and it has helped keep my locs moisturized. I agree with much of the advice posted. I also don't use loc butters because they tend to keep lint and dust in the loc. Others up here use shea or wax so you may want to search for more threads where locs are discussed. There aren't many of us up here, but they have good info.

Take care.

Hey!

Yep, I started them by latching and had trouble with my roots thinning so I switched to palm rolling. That was a pain so i started freeforming. I really like it because my locs are showing my natural curl/ wave pattern.

I know there aren't many women who freeform, but I like this method the best. I guess I'm a little biased. I haven't been to the website you posted, but I will as soon as I post this reply. Take care.
