Preaching about Sin or Righteousness?

A True Soldier Never Dies
I sometimes observe how some preachers would rather preach about "what you should NOT be doing" vs "things that you OUGHT to do." What works best for you if you had to choose one?

I think its necessary to have a balance of both. I don't like it either when one preaches only about sinnnnn sinnn sinnn, and they forget to mention the love of Christ. But then again it is sad when people twist the love of Christ and preach only about it and then people forget that sin is punishable by death. I also can't stand when all a preacher can talk about is prosperity of the pocket but the people miss out on the part about blessing others.

I'm blessed to be under a pastor who teaches balanced lessons and we have other ministers who preach as well so there is not ever one person's views monopolizing the pulpit.

I think you have to preach repentence as a priority, because people don't have the power within themselves to do what is right. If you teach the cross people will be able to discern what is right. The most growth came out of my life when I realized how sinful i truly was and repented.

I agree with HeChangeMyName and sidney... I believe both are important as long as the teaching/preaching is aligned with the Word of God and not the minister's own personal opinion or agenda.

I agree about balance. It's similar to raising a child in that, if the parent only says "no," then they are not encouraging the child to choose well between the two. Everything then becomes seeking attention for the wrongs one does.

There should never be a divide of one or the other... both are needed as well as an explanation for understanding. There should always be a rounded balance. :Rose:

I think there should be a balance. For instance, I did not know until my early 20s that you should set aside a part of your day for devoted worship/praise to the Most High God. It was spoken about explicitly at my church or at all for that matter. I went to a Baptist church and they really weren't the whole lifting of the hands, heads looking toward the sky-type of worship. The first coulple of times I worshipped and praised God from my heart, singing songs to him, he actually spoke to me and I was shocked. I think, even if people were doing something they needed help stopping doing, like fornicating, that worship/praise could allow them to stop quicker because you are in the prescence of God.
