I hope this doesn't sound to ridiculous, but I have a salon appointment tomorrow, and it's the first time in a year that I'll be getting my hair done. I'm so worried about losing too much length or not liking the results. I usually do my hair myself but i'm graduating from college tuesday and want it professionally done. Pray for me yall

*saying a prayer*

Please don't let a new person (or even an old person you haven't been to in a year) cut your hair. Then, everything should be fine. Even if you don't like the way it's styled, you still have your length. Good luck, and congrats on graduation

Well, I'm off. If the stylist tells me that I need a trim, i'll have to take that chance because I really suck at doing it my self, and I eventually want my hair to be more even. I don't have a regular stylist or a person I really trust at all

It had to happen sooner or later, lol. I'll post updates when I return

Dang, NubianAngel- you are already gone!

Maybe you will check the board en route to the salon or something, so I just wanted to say:

DON'T BE AFRAID TO SPEAK UP!

Many stylists will get an attitude or feel as if they can "abuse" you and your hair because it will take them more time, more products and more SKILLS to work with your natural hair. They are wrong and unprofessional to do so.

I'm not sure if this is a natural salon you are going to or what you are having done to your hair, but just DON'T be afraid to say:

"You are pulling too hard."

"Please do not use that small tooth comb on my hair."

"It will be easier to comb through if you leave in the conditioner."

And finally, "YES, I DO have the NERVE to be tenderheaded with 'all this hair'."

If the stylist is doing something that you know will damage your hair, STOP them. I am so adamant about this because I have been silent too many times, especially when going to someone new, and my hair suffered for it. This is exactly when you need to be the most vocal.

I hate how disempowering sitting in a stylist's chair can be, but really we have to learn to "defend" our hair. You will feel so much better if you do

I hope all turns out well!

Congratulations on graduation

************UPDATE*****************

Well, I am back and yes, I did trust her to trim my hair.

Overall, I am very pleased. The stylist washed and deep conditioned my hair, and blew it dry/pressed/trimmed it. She was very attentive to make sure that she was never too rough on my hair, although next time I will comb it out myself before hand. My hair was the longest I had ever seen it in my life!

It was beyond shoulder length. However, my ends were raggedy from the home color job, and I went in expecting to lose at least an inch, and I did. I felt depressed at first, because I never got to "play" in the length that I am so unfamiliar with. But I know that my hair is healthier now, and I can take better care of it from here. I also know that it DOES grow long, I just need to be dilligent in keeping the length.

Thank you on the congrats and advice thus far, and thanks in advance for all the help on my hair growth journey. I really want to get a disposable and take pics for length and future comparisons, but I doubt that I will be pressing again any time soon anyway. I don't want to risk the damage.

I agree - SPEAK UP when necessary. Also, if you're going to get a trim, take your hair and show them exactly how much you want trimmed off. Or, ask them how much they think and then adjust from there so that you are happy.

Wheww... glad it went o.k! I was gonna say "No, please don't go, DONT GO!" until I realized you had already left.
