This typing is so confusing. My hair is like wavezncurlz when my hair is freshly dried , but after a few hours it looks like Empressri's, but not as gorgeously thick as hers. I give up.

my hair errs on the kinkier side of things and shrinks up like crazy, though not sure if that is truly conveyed in pictures. 3b curls are bigger too

from naturallycurly.com and this describes my hair perfectly

Type 3c - Curly Kinky Hair

Subtype 3c is really more than a subtype. It's a type NaturallyCurly members developed because the original system left out this hair type, which falls between 3b and 4a, having its own special characteristics.

Facts

• Type 3c hair has tight curls in corkscrews

• Circumference: Pencil or straw

• The curls can be either kinky, or very tightly curled, with lots and lots of strands densely packed together

• Getting this type of hair to blow dry straight is more challenging than for 3a or 3b, but it usually can be done

• The very tight curls are usually fine in texture

wavezncurlz and PeculiarDaye: Both of you have gorgeous hair but are you 3Cs? It seems like BostonMaria, empressri, and Conterria are 3Cs, but you all look like you have looser hair, like 3Bs. If you guys are considered 3C, I'm confused too! Because I have hair like the last 3 mixed up in my hair, and I was told that was 3C.
Either way, I love all of the beautiful hair in this thread. :)

oh vey! I feel like ~~HoneyComb~~ did on those 4a hair typing posts. :lachen:
Keep in mind, in the pictures I posted my hair is manipulated -not nekkid. They have product and are either brushed/combed into a bun or in a twist out. Yeah, my hair isn't as thick and lovely as some here and looking back at some of my pictures from 10 years ago, my hair is looser. It's probably some heat damage.

Don't 3b's have big loopy curls? That's not me without help.

When I think of 3b curls, I think of white girl curlies like Bernadette Peters (showing my age here) and Kerri Russell. I can't run out of the door and have big ole curls like that!

I don't know what I am but I feel more like a 3c than a 3b. Maybe it's about texture? At any rate, the products and techniques I use have come from the AA 3c/4a boards (and folks like BostonMaria and Empressi) so they may help OP with her journey too.

HTH!

davisbr88,

I'm definitely a 3C hair type.
3B curls are definitely more lose, they have a natural shine that only oil can give me. I am pencil curled as well. As this picture shows you with that one curl in the back...
When the HYH challenge I am in is over I will post some pictures of how it looks completely curly with a better look at my hair...

Liljoy I love your hair!!! (I actually see many of my hair idols in this thread)
In order to achieve a texture similar to yours I need to saturate it with product and either braid it or stretch it overnight, and I have a lot of shrinkage, so I guess that's what makes me a 3c/4a or a 3z with 3,7 influences :-D

heyelll-2-the-naaaw:lol:
i'm still trying to secure my spot some dauuum where

(p.s. i think your relaxed curl in the new pics ^^^ kinda further proved their point:busted::bighug::lachen::lachen: but let's see what Nonie says

tHENATuRALhAiRpRoJEcT, why you gotta drag a girl outta bed into a discussion that she is clueless on? That's like taking a fish out of the aquarium and askin' it to tap dance. I know nuffin about type 3's. My self-absorbed butt only knows about 4B hair. Wavezncurlz' hair looks like kblc06's hair so they belong together, wherever that is. Your guess (ahem, hint :giggle: ) tHENATuRALhAiRpRoJEcT is as good as mine. :yep:

Anyway, I'ma just pull out my lawn chair, get my popcorn and sit back and watch wavezncurlz's lost butt get bounced about like a homeless outcast like you were. :lachen:

wavezncurlz, I'ma tell you right now and save you the trouble of trying, in my best Maury's voice: You are NOT 4B!

I tole you Nonie was gonna banish me.
But my dry hair does look like kblc06 's hair. Hmmm.. wth
We're un-typable.

Back to OP. I don't know if you're 3bc or what...Girl, your hair is adorable and strong as hell. No way could mine take all that color and have all those ringlets. I do want you to chill on the color or else you'll just keep on bc'ing!

Ima keep the dye on the low, I wAna see how my hair looks when it gets to ur length, if it ever get there lol

I love ur hair....

@wavezncurlz and @Nonie For what it's worth, I don't even claim a hair type anymore except to say thready, fine-medium textured with type 3/4a curls. I can't even really call what I have curls because they don't really form ringlets like Empressri or Snilloh's hair because they're just bigger and smaller sized waves. Sort of like ramen noodles  . My shed hair strands are as big as 2c/3a hair and some 4a. I don't have much definition at all without products or moisturizers. When heavy product is applied (i.e. glycerin based), it often gets very limp and stringy, but very moisturized and soft. Otherwise it's a big fluff of hair that's pretty easy to detangle. Although our curl size/diameter is similar, Wavezncurlz has a silkier texture whereas mine is more thready- but still fine. But is does look remarkably similar in that first shot when my hair is in a similar state. I think it's more important to note your hair's behavior and characteristics (i.e. thready, silky, porous, fine, coarse, spongy, etc) rather than hair type in terms of curl size because that's all Andre's system really measures.

I hadn't looked through the thread so I hadn't seen those^^ quoted pics of wavezncurlz. Ermm...Lady, if you aren't 3B, then you're 3B/3C.

kblc06, I've mostly seen your hair in that limp wavy state you describe that occurs when you have product. Looks like a bit like wavezncurlz's siggy pic. I was gonna pull an Irresistible and say you're both Type 2. (Sorry Ms "Nonie you're 3C" but I couldn't resist :giggle: ) But I already told y'all I know nuffin about 3's so I ono what I'm doing in this thread.

Was nice talkin' to y'all.
I'ma scoot outta here 'fore Irresistible shows up. Not tryna get hurt, you see...

Does having silky hair has to do with how moisture is the hair? Cause some times my ringlets look and feel silky and sometimes it's just a big mess

I got nothin but love for ya Nonie! LOL

kblc06 - I'm a hair type orphan too! :)
I'm still searching for something for dd2 that is a holy grail. Her hair is really fine and thready like you say. She's 3 and now that her hair is longer, I've been keeping it in twists. I use BeeMine curly butter for her hair when I twist. I use Qhemet Burdock Root for moisture.

My other dd is my hair twin and uses the same stuff I mentioned in my original post.

liljoyThe cuticle of silky hair is usually 1.) More flat and thus reflects light better 2.) It also usually has a lower porosity due to the the fact that the cuticles are flatter and are more likely to retain moisture better. It is much more sensitive to being overmoisturized than cottony or thready hair and can easily look greasy or weighed down (although my thready hair is also sensitive to too much moisture, but that's mostly because it's fine).

BTW, I'm so glad we have the mention function back. Thank you dimopoulos

Urrrm, I thought I was a 3c but now I am confused..

I'll give it a shot anyway, and please feel free to let me know if I am being delusional.

I shampoo with Dr. Bronner's Castile soap every 4-6 weeks.

I co-was 3-7 days a week (I have just started using Aubery Organics) depending on whether I do a braid-out or not.

The only products I use are Coconut oil and Hemp Seed Butter, occasionally I will use Eco styler for a wash and go.

BEAUTIFUL:yep::lick:.......you are def 3c dont let wavezncurlzconfuse you:lachen:

@wavezncurlzMy hair doesn't even hold twists :( . I started a thread not too long ago on how to keep them. I "attempted" to put some in last Wednesday and the were unraveled to the scalp by Friday morning. And those suckers took me HOURS to do. I may try some of those products.

ETA: I just had a look a your daughter's hair. My hair is not quite as coily as hers and it looks nor where near as silky as hers except in the crown and front left side. It's obvious that you take great care of her hair :yep:

@Nonie....the majority of my hair (i.e. 99.52%) is no where near type two. I just don't have coils or ringlets, only S-shaped squiggly strands :spinning:

I got nothin but love for ya @Nonie! LOL

Thanks, I'm def done with that too, but it's really entertaining plus I love to see pic of hair regardless what type it is, natural hair is beautiful no matter what, ( no offense to the relaxed one)
