i'm slowly coming to this conclusion for my relaxed hair. at first, i loved ntm silk touch leave-in but i noticed that over time a lot of my hair started ending up in the sink. so, i clarified and it still continued though not as much and my hair still seemed dry. i'm beginning to think that cones just won't work for me. for the next three months, i'm cutting out cones and hoping to stop the breakage.

what has been your experience? also, are you relaxed or natural?

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

I have had this problem too in the past. Using cone-heavy products EVERYDAY will lead to buildup and breakage, especially if you have fine hair like mine. I am currently natural, but am trying to stretch my washing/heat routine to every two weeks or more, so I'm going very light on products to preserve the style and reduce buildup. You know what? I'm seeing less hair on the sink and on my clothes--a definite plus. For moisture, I'm using Ojon Revitalizing Mist--it does have some cones, but are further down on the ingredients list so less is used to produce the product.

I LOVE cones!! I've never had a negative experience with cones.

thanks for your response. i do have fairly fine hair too and i was moisturizing every day. the heat protectant (chi silk infusion) i use to blowdry has cones too. any recommendations for a cone-free heat protectant?

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

As far as i know, cones are the best and only form of effective heat protection. If you want to cut out the cones, you will most likely need to cut out the heat too.

I usually stay away from products with a cone within the first 5 ingredients. anything beyond that is okay on my hair & doesn't dry up fast due to cone buildup.

u may not have to completely cut out cones....just be more aware of the amount of cones in a product & where it is on the ingredient list. a leave-in that has amme...cone as the 2nd ingredient, probably won't be a good candidate for you.

or just limit your cones to your conditioners.....and then everything else will be cone free

Thanks for this post! I just started using NTM silk touch leave in and I LOVE it because it makes my hair so soft and Ive been using it everyday. But I think I will use it every other day to be on the safe side. Thanks!

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

I have had great experience with cones. Nothing gives me slip like cone heavy Redken Butter Treat. NOTHING. I tried a cone free Dessert Essence con and as I was wet setting my hair it dried so fast. :ohwell:

I do cowash my hair 1 - 2 times a week and do a full shampoo at least once a week, so my hair is constantly getting moisturized. Maybe that helps. :gorgeous:

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

I use a lot of cones but I tend to clarify sometimes every 2 weeks especially since I co-wash everyday or every other day. I never had any problem with cones but probably since I was using SLS regularly.

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

I'm torn.

Before LHCF - yes they did. Because I didn't understand that those leave-ins weren't really moisturizing my hair. As a result my hair was starved for moisture and I had a lot of breakage.

Now - I think of cone-heavy lotions, creams and serums as 'styling aids' not 'moisturizers.' I know how to get moisture into my hair, and the cone products help seal moisture in, aid in detangling, get rid of frizzies, and make my hair more manageable.

I really don't like cones. I don't like the whole idea of coating your hair with plastic to hide damage, then needing an industrial-grade chemical cleanser to strip the plastics away, then needing to put the plastics back in because the harsh cleanser leaves your hair damaged and dry. That whole cycle just doesn't sit well with me, so I do whatever I can to avoid it.

I've created a nice list of cone-free products, but the only thermal protectant I've been able to find is Elasta QP Silk Thermal Designing Liquid. (I read the ingredient label at the bss once, and it didn't list cones...but I've learned that these companies change ingredient lists fairly frequently, so I can't be 100% sure that it's cone-free.) You might want to check it out.

Right now I'm using Ojon's Voluming Mist. It has a hear protectant in it.

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

NTM silk touch leave in works fine for me. I am natural, co-wash and wash weekly, am now washing more frequently due to the hot weather.

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

I voted based on my experience with Lacio Lacio....it is great for my rollersets which I do once a month to once every 2-3 months.

I used it with my daily cowashes for about a month and was met with breakage galore! No more of that for me!

Re: poll: in your experience, do leave-in products w/cones lead to breakage or drynes

It doesn't bother me because I only use a cone-based serum on wash day. I apply my leave in (Giovanni) and top with a nickel sized amount of Fantasia serum. Now when I tried NTM Silk Touch as a leave in, it was just a mess. I don't blame that on cones, the product (as many other leave ins) was just not for me. Cones are not always the sole culprit of breakage. The product may just be a bad combo with your hair.
