Here's a short hair story:

I was relaxed for about 7 years, then nautral for about 4 years, and back to relaxed as of 1/12/08. Since I been relaxed I have been taking pictures of my hair, and my nape especially since July (he's my fotki:http://public.fotki.com/Sassyb4Classy/2008/nape-progress/) and I have a baldspot in my nape area. I stop brushing my hair since earlier this year, I message my whole head twice a day, I use EO oil, and I put tons of vaseline on my nape when I relax.

Can my nape be saved:

Mosdef, Sassy... have you looked into Megatek to help re-grow your hair? Can you delay relaxers in that spot for a while? Are you stretching relaxers? Have hope. Nothing is impossible. Your nape can be saved....

The messaging is beneficial, but I'm a little concerned about you using Vaseline (aka petroleum jelly). This substance has been shown to clog hair follicles and be unhealthy in general. I would stick with natural oils, and you might also want to incorporate a mixture of peppermint, lavender and neem oil--all of which stimulate the scalp and facilitate growth. Again, I believe your problem may very well be the Vaseline.

1st see a dermatologist..see from there
2nd if they offer you cortisone shots for alopecia..get 2 ecrinal vials to apply nightly
3rd avoid stressfull situations ...avoid stress completely.

Have you tried that Hair Mayo edges creme/root stimulator? Years ago when I was relaxed my edges were getting thin and it worked for me.

Megatek: That sound like a possiblity if me doing it the natural way of using EOs don't work

Vaseline: I didn't know that could be a problem, mmm....I will try not to use it when I protect my nape for my next relaxer, I think I will try to use castor oil on my nape, and just use the vaseline on my ends to protect.

Dermatologist: I didn't even think about that, I have an appointment soon so will ask him to look at my nape

Hair Mayo edges creme/root stimulator: I tried this one time b4 for my hairline when I was natural, but I don't remember why I stop and thrown it out, maybe I'll try that again.

Maybe it has something to do with the way you style your hair. Do any of your regular hairstyles put stress on that area (like tight, high ponytails?). I believe that there is hope for your hair. About a year ago the the hair toward the front of my hair (around my forehead area) was thinning and you could see my scalp there every time I relaxed it. This was due to the fact that I used to brush my hair and put a lot of stress in that area from wearing my part the same way all the time. What helped me is daily scalp massages using coconut oil and applying rosemary oil to the area for growth stimulation. Now that area has thickened and it doesn't look like I'm thinning in that area anymore.

I'm in the "Hide you hair" challenge, so I only wear my baggie (ends only) which I wear all day everyday, and cover it with a scarf, at night I wear my hair with my ends only in the baggie very loosely, I messgae everyday twice, and moisturize with B&B oil moisturizer, and shea butter, and seal with coconut, castor, and rosemary, and peppermint oil.

My hair has thicken up, and retain all of it's lenght, and I don't have a problem with the front of my head. I use to for about 4 years shave my nape to make it look neat and not have any "buckshot", but I realize that the reason I was getting buckshots was from me brushing my nape, so I stop brushing my hair about 10 months ago, and my nape has grown about 3 inches, but I still have a small baldspot.

I think the best things for you to do are to massage that area with soem essential oils, moisturize and seal at least once a day, and dont relax for 6 months, or relax it every other month.

My nape was gone after a visit to a bad stylist. I havent relaxed since January and its growing back. I wear my hair down most of the time. And when I wear it up, I get the back blown out. I think not relaxing it is really helping me.

It doesnt even quite look like a bald spot to me, more like breakage and that area isnt pulled up to cover your scalp

I would say chill on relaxing that area as well

I agree with Irresitible. I think you should give your nape area a break from the relaxer while you are trying to remedy that area.

I had a shorter nape when I was relaxed and after I went natural that area grew out really well. What I found out is that this area of my hair is the most delicate and should have been relaxed last and I probably didn't need to relax it as often as the rest of my hair.

Your hair will grow back. :yep:

Thanks everyone, I will continue to message that area with oils, and not relax that area for a few months. I measure that area this morning and i'm so happy that my nape has grown to almost 4 inches in just 9 to 10 months since I stop shaving it! I just got to focus on that breakage area more now!
I notice also that I have a small bump in that area that just came out of nowhere! I think it could have been when I washed my hair on wednesday and may have braided that area too tight!

What do ya think could have cause that small bump?

Bump Bump for responds pleas!

girl I aint no doc and cant inspect the bump but if you say you pulled your hair too tight, that could do it

if it stays or you have hair loss around it or its bothersome/painful/inflamed or just persisting or worrisome to you , have it checked

I am having the same issue. Someone PM'd me with links to info. that may help. My spot may be bigger than yours. I have been dealing with it for over a year now. I have gone to see a derm. her gave me a cream that didn't work. The last time I had this I was givern scalp injections and the spot grew back within 4 months. I am going to try the essential oils for a couple of months to see if that works. We can support each other through this. I will post pics. I have to figure out how to make them smaller.

Girl I have two small bald spots in the back of my head as well. I recently purchased some megatex and so not see any growth as of yet. I thinnk my spots come from stress and a lack of protein becasue I am a pesicatarian and I rarely eat fish. I have begun to eat more protein and do shakes when I do not feel like protein. Good luck

I grew my hair back from a nape in worse condition than that...

What I did is used tea tree oil (mixed with a carrier oil) daily. I had irritation there from eczema, so I used something similar to seabreeze on a put on my scalp with a q-tip before oiling to help keep it clean and prevent infection/furthur irritation... until it cleared up. I did not relax that area for a long time and I kept in in braids/a loose little cornrow until it grew at least 3 inches. I mositurized it daily.

It took a long time to recover fully, more than a year, but it's thriving now even though I don't do any of those things anymore.

Curious- How do you wear your hair on a daily basis?

i was going to ask the same exact thing. it looks like damage caused by friction (clothes rubbing on back of neck), or tension (wearing a high ponytail that is a little tight).

your hair certainly looks like it is growing, since it is not thin and frizzy. the culprit may be external manipulation.

Do you wear a scarf to bed that ties at the back.......If you do then the tie/knot at the back of the scarf may be causing breakage to your nape area. I know this has happened to me while being relaxed.

I have been using megatek on my spot for a couple of months with no help. The rest of my hair is thriving not that spot though. I am going to try some essential oils. I PM'd you.
