Washing my hair in the sink!

I know you should not do this but I have a serious problem with tangles (which is getting better from Sista's braiding method) that I think washing in the shower can completely cure!

This is the thing with me, I CAN'T STAND for water to be dripping down my face! I am the type of paranoid person who thinks someone will come in and grab me and I'll be damned because I can't see. I don't even wash my face in the shower (I wait until I'm finished) because of the dripping water on my face.

So if you guys can give me some good reasons to stop doing this, I think I can convince myself to do it. For me, I know it goes a lot deeper, but anywhere is a start!

You sound like my daughter, except she is 10. I'll tell you like I tell her: wash your hair in the shower and HOLD YOUR HEAD BACK to keep the water out of your face.

I'll tell ya, oh the tangles you will continue to get if you keep washing hair your length in the sink. Think of all the strands that could have made it to bsl if you would just get in the shower.

I used to wash in the sink too and saw washing in the shower a real pain. BUT .... I keep more hair on my head and out of the comb when I wash in the shower.

Simply, girl thanks for replying!

So should I rinse in the shower to? A lot of people were saying that it is good to detangle while the water is running?

Yes girl. Keepy yo head out the sink! You will see a dramatic difference in the amount of hair you have to take out the drain in the sink, versus the hair in your shower.:yep: The only time I wash my hair in the sink is when I perm it. Other than that, I hop my behind in the shower. Get you a shower comb and detangle in there as well.

Girl, you sound like my daughter too and she's 10 too! :o) Simply is right. And, keep a facecloth handy that you can use to wipe your eyes if anything runs down just in case you hear a strange noise in the bathroom and need to make a break for it in under 2 seconds. lol. (sorry) Girl, ain't nothing going to get you! Give your hair a break and get in that shower!

Im so happy you started this thread MizaniMami. I too wash my hair in the sink and have only seen people wash their hair in the shower on TV, lol until I came here and read folks regimne.
Not only am I scared to have my eyes closed (especially if Im home alone) for long I hate to have hair anywhere on me beside my head, brows and you know where. So the thought of loose hair trickeling down with the water gives me chills. But I know this is something I have to overcome if I want to retain my length. I thought if you washed in the sink in one direction it was the same as the shower. So I feel you Mizani. Its a trip I wash in the sink but have a shower comb, lol....

Uh, oh! This is pretty weird, :look: but I wash my hair in the sink as much as I do in the shower, and there is no difference in my hair shedding or breakage. Believe me, I check those drains!!! :D

It just may be all in the technique and products. My Wednesday CO washes are usually in the sink because my cool water rinses are not as harsh (aka freezing cold:eek: ) as in the shower. When I shampoo my hair on Saturdays, I usually do it in the shower. I just don’t think there is a big difference except, when washing in the sink, one is more likely to retain product in your hair if one does not rinse correctly.

To keep water our of my face when washing my hair in the shower, I turn the water on full force and angle the shower head down a bit and tilt my head back into the stream of water. I also keep a hand towel handy for mopping up. With this technique I get minimal shampoo and water in my face. HTH!

:lachen: I used to be the same way. Maybe you could pretend that if you continue washing in the sink, eventually your hair will get caught in the drain and get ripped off. You know your sink, maybe its a very real possibility?;)

Yup that's what I do. I detangle before washing and pretty much wash my hair straight back. The force of the water keeps my hair pretty straight so detangling takes less time when I get out. Its a pain to get in and out of the shower but it takes less time and strain on my hair than detangling from washing in the sink.

Mizani, if you are sincerely fearful, you need to start practicing. Build up to it slowly. Start one day by just wetting your hair in the shower and nothing else. Finish it off in the sink when your shower is done. Next time, do just a co-wash. Quick, simple, straight back, not a whole lot of time or fuss. Then, gradually build up to a full-on shampoo after you have gotten used to the quick co-wash. OR you could even wash your hair in the sink and rinse in the shower to try and test yourself. It just takes some getting used to if you are not used to it. Keep us posted girl! (Oh, and take your 9 mm in the shower with you just in case) ;) I'm sorry! lol. You remind me of my daughter with this and I cannot help but tease....y'all ain't got nothing to be worried about you will be fine! I promise. Huggs!

I wash my hair in the sink occasionally too. I do think that "sink washing" is the most ideal in salons though, where you are leaning back and your hair is already in the optimal postion for sitting up and detangling.

The main problem with sink washing for most is that you are bending your head forward into the sink so when it comes time to sit up and detangle the hair, you have redirect your hair from the slumped forward position- back down again. This type of manipulation can lead to tangling. If you still choose to wash in the sink, you may find it easier to do with your hair in those braided sections, versus washing in the sink with all your hair slumped forward together. In the braids, your hair is more "controlled" and won't tangle as easily on the combout.

When I wash in the sink, I use a cup (or the vegetable sprayer thingy:lol: ) and just pour water over the braids one at a time and wash like that. It still gets kinda messy, as I tend to splash everywhere- so the shower or tub is still best for me. I love water in my face though. Ahhhhhhh!

If you stand backwards in the shower (back facing shower head) you won't have this problem. Also you could try a moveable shower head. You really need to try washing in the shower. You can manipulate less and it really does fight the tangles. HTH.

I only wash my hair in the shower too. It keeps all the hair in one direction and detangling is really easy under the running water. I do wash it in the sink when I relax, but I lean backward and use the spayer.

My daughter doesn't like to get her face wet either (she's 5) so I just have her stand under the shower to get wet, wash up and then give her the washcloth to cover her eyes with and rinse off.

I hope you find something that works for you.:)

See.......... this kind of stuff is why I LOVE LHCF  ......I have never washed my hair in the shower before -- I'll try it this weekend!

Yep Yep, I never washed in the shower before coming here either!!

Thank Ya'll! I am going to try this today.

Can'tBeCopied, I am starting off slow lol.
Today I rinsed my hair really good (in the sink:perplexed hey, I said I'm starting sloooooow) and applied conditioner. I am going to rinse my conditioner out and detangle in the shower! Wish me luck guys and I'll bump this thread up once I finished!

Seriously though, I'll just lock the bathroom doors and keep my phone in there:D

This is interesting...I'll be the oddball. :look:

I DO NOT wash my hair in the shower. Every time I've ever done it, my hair has been a tangled mess...I don't know why. I've been standing with my back to the shower head, and I *thought* detangling would be easier, but no...I get few detangling issues when I poo/rinse in the sink so I'll continue with that since I haven't had any issues and I don't lose a lot of hair on wash day.

If I had a removable, bendable shower head that would allow me to direct the water (think shampoo bowl hose at the salon) then it probably wouldn't be that bad...maybe it's the height of my shower head or something...I dunno, it just doesn't work.

I started a thread about this sometime last year because I thought I was the only one, but I'm not. I'll bump it for the OP...just for the sake of having two sides to an argument.

Just goes to show that everything ain't for everybody because I'm a faithful sink washer and I have PLENTY of hair on my head. :D

Naw you ain't the only odd ball b/c I'm a faithful sink washer too girl for the very same reasons. I had more hair going down the drain washing my hair in the shower than in the sink any day. I think it's all about technique. I wash my hair in two sections parted down the middle and I wash each section seperately. This helps me to cut down on manipulation and as a result I NEVER have a problem with losing or detangling my hair. Once I'm finished washing and conditioning my hair, it's practically already in rollersetting position all I have to do is start rolling. I also find washing my hair in the sink more convenient b/c, I deep condition under the dryer and I don't have to worry about hopping in and out of the shower.

im the same way. i just do everything in the shower

Hey Girls I just tried it! I wonder why I waited so long lol! I was a little scared, I kept wiping my face but it worked! It really worked. I was kinda scared to comb because my hair felt so soft under that running water! but I lost less than half of the hairs that I usually loose! And detangling under that water was a breeze!
VwVixxen and others, you MUST try this!

Darn, I'm really getting there!

I never thought of washing your hair in the sink as bad. I wash mine in the sink most of the time because I feel like I can take my time where in the shower I have to rush because I don't like to waste so much water and plus my shower goes cold after I'm in there for so long. Half the time I'm hopping in and out of the shower numerous times and it's a pain. I think the shower is better for tangles but I will take my sink any day.

I detangle far more easily in the shower. I've read that you shouldn't pile your hair on top of your head while washing as this can cause tangling. I also sometimes would get me hair caught under the faucet  . That alone was reason to stop.
Just stand in front of the shower head and kind of lean just your head back to keep water from your eyes.

But you know what else concerned me...

I think I was under the running water too long. After I rinished, though my hair was easier to detangle it didn't feel as soft. It was like I rinsed all the conditioning I just did down the drain.

Is that possible? Can you rinse for too long? Should I get in there, and hurry and rinse or take my time?

I don't know. I guess it is. I tend to save my final conditioner rinse for the very last thing before I get out. So, I'll poo or co-wash and then put on some cond. (if it's not a dc) and then scrub my body, shave, etc. and then rinse out my cond last. So, I guess I never experienced too much rinsing or overly-dry hair.

Yeah. I guess that's personal preference. It doesn't bother me. I just rinse, condition, poo, poo, poo and then scrub my body last, get out and put in either my color rinse or my deep conditioner.

ETA: Now that I think of it....I get my shower stuff ready. Get undressed and throw on an old spaghetti strap nightgown before I apply my relaxer (that way, I can slip out of it quick) and am ready to jump in the shower quicker than the temperature on the faucet in the sink will be ready to rinse. So, there's no time to burn.

[COLOR="Blue"]What is the braiding method?

Hey Gradygirl!

It is when you braid your hair before washing. For me I braided my hair in 4 big braids and secured the ends with my pony tail holders/scruchies (them things needed to be washed anyways). Then I washed my hair in the braided sections. This cuts down on tangles because the hair really doesn't move out of place. I hope I made it clear.

I have done both shower and sink. When I was in teh sink I have a mesh strain to catch the hair, I have no problem at all detangling. When I was in the shower I have more problems, my hair changed alot after getting sick and with all the meds I take, it went from very course and thick to very thin and easier to manage. But my results sink vs showers, the sink is better with me now my step daughter who has very very very thick hair and very course dry she needs to use the shower....
