ph is the Potential concentration of Hydrogen ions. the more hydrogen ions you have in a solution the more acidic it is. the scale goes from 1(very acidic) to 14(very alkaline) with 7 being neutral. i think our hair should be between 3 and 4 or 5. so what does ph have to do with hair? well, a high ph is needed for some products to work, eg, relaxers, perms and colors and that is because a high ph actually raises the cuticle and allows the relaxer or color to penetrate and do the breaking of bonds or deposition of color. on the other hand ACV rinses and neutralisers are acidic and work to close the cuticle and restore hair ph levels. that is why ACV rinses cause the hair to shine, the hair cuticle are closed and light reflects of it.
it is important that our air remains ph balanced to prevent damage to the cuticles cos when the cuticles are damaged the hair looks dull, weak and is highly susceptible to breakage!
