Can a neautralizing poo maintain porosity???

Please forgive me if this question sounds stupid. From what I've read, though, porosity has to do with the pH level of the hair. Overly porous hair needs an acidic type of poo/con. Neautralizing poo balances hair with a high pH level. Why would it not help overly porous hair, which also has a high pH level??? What do you all think?? I need a quick fix today, and I already have aphogee 2 min keratin treatment on my hair.

Well yes but if you have porous hair you might want to think about buying a shampoo with a low pH that is designed for frequent use. Neturalizing shampoo isn't really too conditioning. Try looking at Elasta qp shampoo's or Joico shampoo's which all have a ph of 4.5-5.5 which will help keep the cuticle layer flat and tight to help overcome porosity issues. One of the causes of porosity issues is using certain conditioning shampoo's too often that have higher pH's. For example keracare and cream of nature have ph's in the 6.5 range. This makes it make your hair feel soft but the high ph can cause your cuticle layer not to lay flat and the high ph can irrate your scalp, causing it to shed which can mimic dandruff.

BTW The elasta shampoo's are a great bargin. Sally's has than for like 2 bucks.

Thank you gymfreak! Your post was very helpful. I did know what I was talking about! I think a neutralizing poo would be drying, also. I would like to see how it works today, though, since that's all I got.

I will definitely have to try those elasta shampoos. What is the brand?? I looked on its site, and it had about 6 different shampoos. I've also heard good things about Revlon Porosity Control and Roux Porosity Control.

No but the elasta shampoo's all have ph's in the 4.5-5.0 range which is acidic enough to help keep your cuticle closed. Most companies don't put the pH on the bottle but elasta does. Joico does too and their shampoo's all have low pH's. If you are curious about the poo's you already use, email the company and ask.

I don't belive they are. They do use the milder sulfates though. The shampoo for relaxed hair looks and smells just like Nexxus Botanoil shampoo. You only need a little bit too.

Thanks Gym. I use CON which leaves my hair soft but I still have dryness issues later in the week. I've always had problem with dry hair whether I was relaxed or natural. My hair's also very coarse so that can be a factor as well.

I used CON my whole life and I couldn't ever figure out why my hair would feel dry later and why my scalp would always be flakey. It was the CON. The pH is jus too high for me, it makes my scalp peel and it doesn't really clean my hair so I with the peeling, I had buildup of conditioner and etc... Then I would use dandruff shampoos to fix it but the core of the issue was never resolved. Try using a shampoo with a lower pH for awhile and see if that helps, concentrate the lather on your scalp and let the suds rinse thorough your hair. Go to elasta and request some samples.

You could use the elasta as your only shampoo. If you want to use something else, try using a acv Rinse after shampooing to make sure your cuticle is closed.

Just wanted to add that if you had Motions Oil Moisturizer Neutralizing shampoo on hand already and were in a pinch, you could use that. It's the ONLY neutralizing shampoo I know that is actually moisturizing. But if not, then use any of the other previously mentioned products.

For the past 2 relaxers, I actually use neutralizing shampoo again a week after my relaxer (a SistaSlick tidbit). I follow it with a moisturizing shampoo.

Since you say the Elasta is inexpensive, I'm gonna pick it up to see if I have less dryness. I may try the Joico too.

If you have thicker indivual strands or low porosity hair (really tight cuticles) a pH with a higher pH like in the 5.5-6.5 range like keracare and cream of nature, might be of better benefit. If you have overly porous issues thought, get something with a low pH.

The weird thing that just I noticed is that when I do the milk treatment on my hair as a pre-poo (some naturals use it to temporarily loosen their natural curl pattern), all of my hair is softer, smoother and silkier, not just the NG. I think it is the lactic acid in the milk that smooths my cuticles. I noticed that my hair breaking dropped dramatically.

Is there a permanent fix to overly porous hair? What causes it to be this way? Sorry if I am thread jacking...

Dealing with overly porous hair is a constant thing. As your hair gets healthier your porosity problem will get better. Right now try using acidic shampoo's and conditioners will help get your cuticle closed and smooth. In the long run, you have to decrease the damage you put your hair through. Look up Sistaslick's article about porosity. She has great advice.
