PERMANANT DYE ON NATURAL HAIR=NATURAL?

So if someone has relaxed hair and they get a color than they are double processed, I have never heard anyone disagree with that.

So if you were colored and natural and then got a relaxer then you would still be double processed...

Color = processing

So if you think that you can be processed and still be natural then yes you can be colored and be natural. BTW: Plenty of people's hair texture changes with color. Mine does.

Really. cause thats what the million dollar question is.. does your hair texture change when u add permanent color?

I agree with u saying that there is an emotional attachment there. i guess i see it from both sides, i dont have a yes or no answer
So is it just a chemical thing, cause what about people who are natural but press their hair until it cannot revert. is that still natural even tho no dye or chemicals were used?

Nope. The texture was altered, how can it be natural?

That's the only reason I can think of as to why black women overemphasize texture over color. Is there ANY other natural substance on Earth that you can just add color to and call natural? People get all up in arms about added artificial colors in their foods, but it doesn't apply to hair *shrugs*

I would drive myself crazy with this debate because it is simply one of those things people don't want to be rational about. imo

Whatever.. if you're natural, virgin, heat streched, relaxed... have fun. Neith don't care

Thats my exact point "The texture was altered, how can it be natural?" so does color alter? which in turn means not 100% natural

But see, the color altering the texture varies from woman to woman, as seen in this thread.

Relaxers always alter your texture, so I think that's why women get squirrely about whether color = not natural.

I think we all agree on the definition of virgin - no matter what you're using. I'm a hennahead, so my hair is not virgin.

When it comes to pressed permanently straight hair, that's a grey area for me - even in my own head, I'm not sure if I consider that natural, or not. The logical answer is no, but - I dunno.

See... for me altering the color is on the same level as altering the texture. If you do either one, your hair is changed on a molecular level. It's not what grew out of your scalp. There is foreign stuff in there/stuff taken out of there.

I don't get why there has to be a difference between virgin and natural hair. It's like people are so protective of the natural title, they just don't want to give it up.

but like I said, that's just me. I'm crazy so... don't listen to me :spinning:

I suspect because - well, if I'm not natural (which I wouldn't be, if natural = virgin), what would my hair be considered?
Not relaxed? No, because I don't like defining thing by what they aren't.....
Natural texture, maybe, and we are just too lazy to always stick the extra word in? *lol*
Chemical Free? I use that in my siggy now, so that might work.

Yes Kiya, I like the Khemical Free.. and I spell it with a K, cause I like it like that.. LOL :lachen:
Okay what about all the other shampoos and conditoners we use that are not natural? they have chemicals in them, maybe not straightening chemicals but they are not 100% fruits nuts and berries. what do u guys think on that one? THANKS!!! :) ya'll so sweet for helpin me.. :)

I don't get into products, because our water has chemicals in it too, and that's just going down into absurdity, in my mind - I'm solely focusing on things that permanently change the hair/have to be cut off to be changed.

If you were 100% nuts and berries, though - I don't know. Raw hair?

:lachen::lachen::lachen: :lachen::lachen: thats too funny! yeah i guess u would be raw hair. so Kiya, what is your take on the flat iron altering? natural? cause it in turn can permanently straigten it if not done correctly. I went to my stylist and she was doing two-strand twist in my hair. there was another girl there getting Kinky twist, and she said to me, i remember when my hair used to curl like that, she said her hair was still natural but due to constant pressing it wont give a curl hence the kinky twist she was getting that same day. :( i said i would hate for that to happen to my hair. :perplexed

Gray area. Hardcore gray area. I can't, with a straight face, say that someone whose hair cannot return to it's original (from scalp) texture, is natural.
At the same time (and this links to the value associations Neith was speaking of) I feel - I dunno - bad? - about saying - Nawh, you ain't natural, either.

So, gray area. Concentration of studied illogic. I don't know. :look:

Girl yes, it is a very hard one to figure out. but i will keep the Khemical FREE thing. i like that. lol and its pretty safe.

REALLY?? did u still consider all of your hair to be 100% au naturalle?

Yeah... I don't get all caught up in that natural/napptural thing. Yes color is a chemical but I still considered my hair natural. I had highlights only in the front and only maybe 1/4 of my hair was dyed. So would I tell people my hair was 75% natural? And now that I cut all the blonde pieces out is my hair back to being virgin? It just doesn't make sense to me.

I guess thats what we are all here to try to understand. lol
1st off i thought that having color didn't make u any more unnatural than anyone else but from reading some peoples responses I guess it just depends on the individual and if your hair really did alter the texture or not. shoot idk. lol :lachen:

Wait wait wait. This is possible? I didn't know that. Does that mean that the hair is damaged? I mean how much pressing what it take to do that?

I am colored and my hair is still NAPPY...no change in texture.
Um, I don't get the not natural if you color argument, can I not experiment and express myself with my natural hair. If you ask some a "real natural" are those who:
- never straighten
-never use products to define their curls
-never color
-only uses natural products etc.

Notice the words never and only. I think those are extreme and limiting point of views. Once you aren't relaxed imo, you're natural!

Oh, yeah, it's definitely possible. It's damaged, yes, and not that much pressing is needed - there was someone whose hair got damaged from one pressing - not the whole head, but certain areas wouldn't curl back to her original texture.
When you hear about people 'training' their hair to be straight - that's what's going on. Some people want that - because they never want to wear their hair curly. For those who want to go back and forth, though, there's always a risk (and your experience and products determine the size of the risk) that your hair won't curl back up all the way.

No matter how many times I dyed my hair it was as nappy as the day I was born. Yes I am natural. I think this whole debate thing is a one ups-manship which some naturals love to do. Its really not that serious.

I've colored my hair for several years and it has not changed the texture. It's still the same shrinking, coily fluffiness.

I used to say I was natural, but I saw people's point about natural hair not having any chemically altered process, so I just say that I don't have a relaxer (see signature.) I do not trip though if I see a sista with colored hair and says she's natural because she does not have a perm. Even if her hair is platinum blonde.
