Ossama's

I got my hair done at Ossama's because I had a funeral to attend. I went in as I was waiting, I saw a woman blowdry then curl the hair and roll each section. I'm thinking to myself, What good is rolling the hair if it's being curled by hot curlers first. I do mean hot curler, you could see the smoke coming form those curlers. It makes me wonder if they intentially set their blowdryers and curlers on the highest temperature.

I'm getting my hair done and the guy is blowdrying. He blow dries near the front sides and that dryer burned the hell out of my scalp. I told him it was too hot and he was saying he wanted to get it straight. I guess they think that's all we worry about with our hair. When I got my hair curled. I could literally smell burning with each curling. I 'm sure the heat and the many products played a part but I stopped in the middle and put my hair in a banana clip.

I couldn't take sitting there feeling as if my hair was being burned to a crisp. I was smelling burnt hair in my sleep, it was just that strong. It was driving me crazy, I HAD to wash my hair and deep condition it. Now I'm back to air drying and condition washes. I need to get back to caring for my own hair. I will stay away from them the rest of this year. The fast service and bounciness can be addictive but they are definitley NOT into hair care! My husband moaned when I washed and pulled it back in my bun. He was like, "Back to that again". He liked the results when I got my hair done at the shop; I like hair on my hair.

I don't care for the steam conditioning method. I think the conditioner penetrates so much better with actual heat. That's just my opinion. These salon need to focus on healthy hair instead of straight hair. If that were there concern, they would not use so much heat. MY blowdryer at home doesn't get that hot!

My hair fell out when I got it blow dried at Yehia's(Egyptian hair salon) a few years back. My hair is natural chemical free and it still broke off. I vowed I would never go back and if your hair doesn't like heat like mine I would stay far far away.

Yeah,I had a bad experience when I went to Ossama's is South Holland (I think they moved now). My hair smelled like fire! My mom told me that she could smell my hair when I walked into the house, and she was upstairs! Some folks swear by their technique...it's just not for me though.

Before I stop going there completely I would just let them blow dry and then I would be out. I got tired of them bugging me about trimming my hair and the heat was just crazy. Yehia was the last straw in me going to a beautician.

* Plus my hair broke off in one section.

I swear the burnt smell was crazy! I could ot take it, I know they burned my hair! The curlers was smoking hot! I washed my hair the second day after getting it done. I wonder if they even know that those appliances are too hot.

Yup, me too. I used to go to the one in Hyde Park back when I was in school and I lost a big chunk of hair in the back of my head thanks to them frying my hair to a crisp. I smelled the burnt hair after every visit, but did not see the impact until later. I, too, was mesmerized by the bounce! I used to have to air my hair out before I could go to a social event because the burnt hair smell was so strong. But, boy did it look pretty. :lachen: I should have known better!

Yup..I used to go the the Yehias downtown on Dearborn I think (I would pass Ossamas on the way)...they fried my hair and none of the beauticians seem to believe in roller setting or wrapping..they cut off too much and too much heat..never again..I will always do my own hair

Dang I can't believe this! I haven't been in a salon in about six months. I really didn't remember what it was like, but now that you mention it I'm like I may never go back.

Besides the only heat I allow on my hair is ceramic heat and it better not be smoking. Now way back when, I did allow this stylist to press me out and I saw and smelled smoke, sure enough she had burned a section of my hair off to within an inch of it's life!!! It took me a year to grow that back, now here I am with hair that is longer than it's ever been and I am not going to be tempted to get it done "professionally" THIS time.

Learn from the past, right? Right!

When I went to Ossama's I was told the guy who rollersets wasn't in today! What!! The other shop I visited Ahmed, seem as though they don't want to waste any time rollersetting. I think alot of these places don't want to lose customers because of the time it consumes rollersetting.

that's is why i don't frequent the egyptian places anymore. ossama's, yehia's and mena's too. although i like the steam method, there was too much heat AND they only do beautiful hair if it's long. the only time you can get something safe is if there's a black stylist in there.

Sounds horrible! Good for you for leaving! It's a shame that there aren't more beauty salons that care about the health of your hair over how your hair looks.

Same here. I went to Yehia on Dearborn and I'm done with them. Muhammed was my stylist and he didnt understand trim vs. cut. My hair was the exact same length for a whole year because he was cutting too much off. My edges were fried because the dryer was just too hot. Not only is the dryer hot but they move very slow when they dry your scalp because they're trying to get it straight. I see other clients jumping and cringing in their chair because that heat hurts! I would be nearly in tears from the heat burning my scalp myself. Later for that sh**!
