** ONE YEAR SANS RELAXER (A TRANSITIONER’S UPDATE WITH PICS INSIDE) **

Natural again ... this time for good!
Hey, folks:

Soooooo … I’ve been a member of LHCF since August 2004; but, I didn’t get serious about taking care of my hair until last year. My last relaxer was on March 1, 2007, and I took my first hair photo in May. Sure, I had a few strands grazing BSL (pic below), but it was thin and see through (not a good look):

I made the decision to transition back to natural shortly after that photo was taken. All was going well, until I underwent the dreaded (but necessary) “medium chop” in September 2007:

And now here are current pics of my hair one full year after my last relaxer (6 months after my medium chop):

So that’s my straightened hair; here are some dry new growth comparison shots …

… followed by some current wet texture shots:

My sister measured my new growth for me last Saturday (March 1st) and she said it has grown:
  • 7 inches on both sides
  • 6 inches in the front (bangs)
  • 6 inches in the back
  • 5 inches at the very top in the crown (hair breaks constantly here)
Uneven growth, yes … but it is what it is. :ohwell:

What About Growth Aids and Vitamins: So did either contribute to my growth? In a word … no. Last June, I bought both Lenzi’s Request and Boundless Tresses with intent to use for growth. When I got the Lenzi’s Request, I saw that it was essentially a solid hair grease (ummmm … noooooooo), so I quickly gave that to my sister. Then I turned my attention to BT. I bought the original kind without the scent; unfortunately, the sulfur smell was too much for me. After trying it for a week, I gave it to my sister. She said both of them worked for her though, but she’s not sure how much growth she got from them. As for vitamins, I hate taking pills, so that idea was out from the word go. I tried a liquid vitamin back in September. It was DISGUSTING - like ingesting green swamp sludge - so I stopped taking it. It’s still sitting in my fridge right now.

So The Bottom Line Is: My hair grows approximately ½" a month without any help from growth aids or vitamins. I just make sure that I massage my scalp every other day to stimulate growth. Now that I know how fast it grows on its own, I plan to try both Grow-Aut Oil and MN to see if I can get a little more growth. Thankfully, neither one of them have overpowering smells. I’ll let y'all know if they work for me.

Whew that was a long post! I just wanted to share my hair anniversary with my LHCF peeps … thanks for stopping by!

Ciao!

Looks like you are having a wonderful transition. Your hair is very pretty and growing nicely. How long do you plan to transition?

Thank you so much for the compliments, ladies. Y'all really know how to make a girl smile.

Oooh, your hair is SO lovely and thick - just gorgeous! How long do you plan on transitioning?

I plan to transition for 18 months, which means I will BC in September 2008. September is turning out to be my major cutting month for some reason.

Gorgeous texture and wonderful growth! :yep: How often are you flat ironing?

Right now, I go to the salon to get it flat ironed once a month. Once I'm natural, I'll probably do it less, since I prefer my curly hair over my straight hair.

beautiful!!!
your hair looks great!
I am only 2.5 months post, but I am contemplating a transition, though I am just taking it a month at a time. I've never gone past 4 months, so when I get there, I will decide a course of action, but all these pictures of long transitions are very inspiring:yep:

Wow. That is some great progress.
You're really helping me stick to my transitioning.
I'm 13 weeks post and I've got ringlets everywhere.
I found it interesting that you haven't really used any growth aids.
My hair grows at the same rate as yours.
So I am definitely glad to see I'm not the only one out there.
Keep up the good growth. :yep:

Excellent progress sis!! Sometimes I wish I could transition but my patience level is not in the right place for it. Keep up the good work!
