I never thought I would be a self-braider but I started watching youtube videos and I'm actually doing it. I couldn't bring myself to pay someone $70 to get my hair done anymore. So I said bump it and bought some yarn yesterday.

It's not the best quality pic

They're still in progress but I'm getting it done. I'll probably still be doing it into tonight and maybe a bit into tomorrow, but It's the holiday weekend so no biggie. I'm so excited!!!!!

BTW, ladies who use Red Heart supersaver yarn for braids. There's also Red Heart Soft. I got it from Michael's. It is sooooo soffffffttttt. It's about 1.00 more and I don't believe it comes in the huge roll so I just bought two medium roles. I'm so giddy about how much money I'm saving because of this.

I never braided before doing the yarn braids myself a few weeks ago. It's very liberating. And being that it is difficult for me to keep my hair in styles for long periods of time, I won't feel bad about taking these out early. All it cost me was $3 and time.

All done!!! Ok, well I still have to trim it a bit and burn a lot of the ends, but for the most part all done!!!! I will definitely be getting locs at some point in my life.

And yeah, it was very liberating. Lol I feel like I accomplished something. Like I beat the system or something.

^^^ I think you did a great job! Self-styling is the way to go! At least you were brave enough to give it a try. I'll be trying these at some point in time, but I need to find a good youtube tutorial first. About how long did it take you in all? What did you do in order to see the back of your head?

Thanks!!
If you type in yarn braid tutorial, so many vids pop up.
I esp. like the one by chocolate tresses. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXNA9dXvJWo. She has a lot of styles for them as well.

I started yesterday at noon and took like a million breaks. If I were to condense all the time when I was actually braiding and not doing random things, it probably took me about 7 hours all together.

I didn't look at the back of my head. I went and did this guerilla style. Just taking a small section at the time from the back and working my way to the front. I used my fingers to feel how close the yarn was to my scalp. Also I only used two strands of yarn for each (four when you fold them in half). Hth!

Good job!! I learned how to do yarn braids last summer and I absolutely love them. I found a youtube video of a white woman who had adopted a black girl and she did yarn braids in her hair. Once I saw the video about twice, I gave it a shot and success. I do mine now in two parts. I do the front of my head on one day and pull it back to cover the undone back. I finish the back the next day. Hubby doesn't like them, but only because it's not my hair and he doesn't like anything artificial in my hair. But, oh well. It is a great style for the summer because my natural hair is so thick that it is useless to try to flat iron it because it will only last for about a day. I'm putting my yarn braids back in next week.
