Hi ladies, I have just started doing pre-treatment shampoos using a Hot oil treatment by Prosheen. However, i have noticed that most of you seem to be using natural products for this process and are getting great results.

1 Could you please list the oils that you use and explain what they are supposed to promote, e.g. Jojoba: shiny hair etc.

2 Could you also tell me whether you use these products before/after roller setting, as well as everyday (scalp and hair care).

3 Please also specify what products you use in conjunction with these and whether or not it results in a soft, shiny, light finish. Much obliged, i value your opinions.

I use either of the carriers that you mentioned:
Olive,
Almond,
Coconut, or
Grape Seed oil with 3 drops of wheat germ oil to promote growth and stop breakeage.

I use this as a pre-shampoo when I notice that my hair is very dry. I don't use it right after I get a fresh touch-up, as oil tends to strip your relaxer from your hair.

I use coconut milk with a tbls of honey for shine

I use a tea made from rosemary and lavendar as a leave-in spritz, but I spray it on, then apply my leave-in cream. The tea also promotes growth.

Hi, I used some castor oil the other day and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to lighten the consistency of this thing. I really liked the results that I got but I didn't like the sticky feel. It made my hair shiny for 4 days and most but still a little sticky. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Could you elaborate a little on that?

Thanks.

Alli, try mixing it with some coconut oil.

Lonei, I use castor and coconut together as a pre-poo treatment (with some honey) and it is great for moisture and softness.
Sometimes after condtioning I might use a spray leave-in and then some coconut oil in preparation to braiding my hair for a braidout. It leaves a nice shine.

I use a combo of all the oils u mentioned fro my pre treatments. I use a mix of castor, avocado and evoo for my nape area to help with growth. I find that mixing castor with lighter oils (evoo, coconut, almond) with more of the lighter ones and less of the castor oil makes it more effective.

I use a mix with castor oil on my ends when doing a braid out, I find it too heavy alone for every day use. I add both castor oil and evoo to my deep conditioners for extra moisture.

I use coconut and a little jojoba when I air dry for moisture and shine. I find both light enough for eveyday use to seal my ends. I had to experiment to find which combinations work best for my hair.

I want to start pre-treating with EVOO, honey and eggs.
Will the EVOO really strip the relaxer from my hair or is that new growth? Maybe I'll use it every other weekend.

Sure. My stylist has always told me to refrain from using hot oil or any oil based pre-shampoos as they tend to make the touch-up last fewer weeks. For instance, I get a cellophane rinse in my hair when I get a touch up. The more I wash, the more the color comes out.

It's kind of the same theory...the oils just kind of work against the freshly relaxed hair. Does that make sense?

Webby,

I understand about the cellophane I see some of my color rinse out everytime I wash my hair. As far as the hot oil I read in a hair magazine recently that you shouldn't do hot oil treatments on freshly relaxed hair because it may be damaging so I don't do those until my touch-up is 3 weeks old. However, if you're putting room temperature oil on your hair and not using any heat along with it for example as part of your daily styling I don't see how that could be damaging. That's why I wanted some clarification.

Thanks!

That makes more sense. My stylist is Dominican. I speak to her in Spanish, but a lot is lost, as we speak different dialects.

For those who use these oil in the pure form or as a mixture (100% almond or castor or coconut oil etc), what type of stores do you buy these products from?

Natural Food Stores.

Olive oil can be bought in any grocery store. I've purchased coconut oil from African/Indian food stores. They sell the refined castor oil in Walgreens, CVS and in the medicine aisle of grocery stores. For the pure, brown castor oil I think you'd have to check at Whole Foods or some other natural food store.~

Thanks Webby and PBE, that makes sense. I already mixed the ingredients and I'm so anxious to try it out. Everyone keeps talking about how much slip they get from EVOO and honey. (I guess I should think about what's best for me and not others right?) I think I'll just apply it on room temperature and if I notice any stripping or what seems like new growth then I'll apply it when I know my usual new growth comes in.

Okay... I just bought a big jar of Coconut oil at this Indian Spices&More-type store yesterday. Now, when I brought it home today, it was no more liquidy--it was solid white! This kinda freaked me out because I was pourin' it and everything yesterday. Even at the store all the jars were full of liquid coconut oil, so what could have happened between yesterday and today? Does it do that when exposed to air? Funny thing is, when I scoop it out, it melts into oil in my hands, so it's still usable.

I got me some Castor oil today at that same Indian store. Random Fact: Did you know that Castor oil, if you drink it, can abort your unborn child?

Hey sweetyb,
Just wanted to let you know that coconut oil at room temperature or colder (in it's natural form) is a solid- so no worries. THat's how you know you got the real stuff.
smile.gif
Just microwave it for a few seconds, or like you said, warm it up in your hands and you're good to go!

Someone told me this... I'm hoping I didn't just release a privately held secret or something, 'cause you know once the Health agencies hear word they're takin' Castor oils off of all shelves!

Thank you!

i mix wgho with sao. WGHO=wild growth hair oil, SAO= Sweet Almond Oil.

I oil my scalp with this every 2 days since i am in box braids.

i use shea butter to moisturize my scalp and hair.

All of these make my hair shinier and moister. Keep that dry scalp and those itchies away.

I use a variety of other oils as hot oil treatments. I have yet to try castor or coconut.

hey...thats how i got here...my momma drank some when she had 2 weeks to go...i am known by this one woman as the "castor oil baby"

Re: Olive, Castor, Almond, Jojoba, Coconut oil etc

Okay, does anyone still use the castor oil on their scalps? If so, do you mix it or warm it up before applying considering its so thick? Thanks.

Re: Olive, Castor, Almond, Jojoba, Coconut oil etc

Soybean Oil is also very good for moisture, it is a light oil that is quickly absorbed into the hair shaft unlike minerl oil which sets on top.

yes. that and the strong kind of aloe that grows wild in the indies.

Re: Olive, Castor, Almond, Jojoba, Coconut oil etc

What you said was true about Castor Oil. In the West Indies, Some women and younger girls drink Castor oil and eat peanuts to abort their unborn child.

Hee hee... what did she drink it for? A speedy delivery I guess?

Hello Ladies,
I am a newbie here and I am so excited. Am I suppose to start a new thread for this? If yes, sorry didn't know. I decided to search for my question about coconut and jojoba oil. But I am still unclear about the uses of both of these oils, are they sealants or moisturizers. I bought a jar of virgin coconut oil and a bottle of jojoba oil today. I was thinking about using the jojoba as the moisturizer and the coconut oil as a sealant. Is this correct? I am a little confused. Could someone please explain the usage of each of these oils?
