This picture doesn't show how bad it really was but you get the idea.

..Did you ever think back then you could grow your hair long? I know I didnt. Just look at your 2005 picture and look at your hair in the mirror. Its crazy aint it? LOL! Happy growing and thanks for posting!

thanx :) and i really thought my hair was the bomb back then too :ohwell: I remember it was even difficult to get it to curl!

meaganita look at the difference in your ENDS!! They are so beautifully lush now.
Awww thanks Dillard!
Girl, I thought my hair was the business back then too!

Here is my comparison:

Pic #1 When I first began my Journey May 2004. My ends were extremely damaged. I had bits and pieces of breakage everywhere.

Pic #2 November 2004. I began to moisturize and retain length but my ends that I started with were still there.

Pic #3 August 2007 - Now after taking advice from LHCF. (Hair is even, just uncombed on my left side)

WOW, your hair looks amazing, what did you do? Its really beautiful.

I dont have any pictures of my hair after it was at its MOST damaged point, however going through my pictures my hair USED to be somewhat healthy:

to being cut chin length after a horrible first weave and many overprocesses and lack of moisture:

I saw your damagaed pics in fotki. What happened to cause the breakage? I liked your style. How did you do your lips gloss in the second picture?

Ha, what caused the breakage? How much time do you have? :ohwell:

In all seriousness now; those first two pictures are from 2005-the beginning of 2006. I used to go to a really good stylist but once the salon ruined my mother's hair I stopped going altogether. But during a period of a little over a year, I caused my breakage by:

1. Started doing my hair myself but NOT properly. As in, I would wash my hair, but did I pre-poo? Girl, I didn't know what pre-poo was. I scrubbed my hair and scalp like if it was a pair of old Dungarees desperately trying to get clean. Literally, I would take the ENDS of my hair (the most delicate part, how could I be SO dumb! :wallbash:) divide it in half, and scrub them against each other. I thought, the more lather the better! Never did a protein treatment, was barely doing a DC, and yet I thought "I'm mixed, I'll always have my hair!" :nono: Would flat iron with no heat protectorant whatsoever, but I would BLOW DRY before that on the highest setting with a boar bristle brush.

2. Colored it two times within a 6 month time span with BLEACH. My best friend highlighted it for me the first time, except it turned out to be most of my hair because I wanted a lot of color. Would've been somewhat okay had I knew how to moisturize. Never did that, ever. I would just go about my business because I hate products that weigh down my hair and most of my products did. I figured, my scalp produces enough sebum, I'll just use that. Anyway, bleached it the first time in September 06 and then AGAIN in March 07 (for my birthday, nonetheless).

3. Got a weave (my very first! and very last) sewn in one month AFTER that bleach attack and kept it in for 5 weeks. Oh, and I didn't MOISTURIZE!! This was probably my worst mistake, because a. I had never had a weave before and so I never knew how to take care of the hair underneath and b. everything else that I did was already damaging enough. I NEVER EVER EVER put any type of moisturizer onto my scalp. I just let my hair get dry to the point where when I took out the tracks, it literally looked like a blind man took some hedgeclippers to my hair. I never cried so much in my life. My hair went from being a little past SL to just BARELY passing my neckline. It was dry, it was brittle, it was damaged, it was weak, it was everything. So I went to a hair salon (April 14, still remember the day) and got the shortest haircut I had ever had in my life, it was chin length. Went to that stylist for awhile up until joining this forum, and she's helped strengthen my hair, but I rather do a better job by doing the work myself.

And of course, there are other things I did wrong, like horrible diet (fast food almost everyday), NO vitamins (too lazy to take them), hardly drinking water, etc. I'm glad to say now though that I've turned my life and my haircare around and I'm noticing results which is motivating.

Oh, and to answer your lip gloss question - I don't quite remember what gloss I used cause that was from 2006 but I'm almost certain it was just a dab of Lip Glass by MAC. I don't like using too many colored products on my lips. Right now I'm in loooove with Rose Mint from Sephora. The best thing ever.

The first picture is in November of 2006. CLEARLY I was using off-brand Windex AND my 3.1 megapixel digital camera :look:, so sorry for the quality! My ends were fried and jacked up due to stress, heat, self-relaxing (gone wrong!), no set regimine, pjism with cheapies-- I could go on! The second picture (still some streaks :ohwell: but at least a better camera) is in July of 2007. My hair is more sleek, shiny, and my ends aren't too shabby! I'm motivated seeing this even if no one else is (I don't think that I ever put these pics side-by-side)! When will I quit being lazy and make my hair site to chronicle my progress?!

Wow....oh my goodness

tiffanyoneal -Thank you so much for starting this thread. It is amazing where you ladies have come from and where you are now. I saw my hair in so many of you ladies but WhipEffectz1 and adw425 my heart leapt when I saw you two ladies hair.

adw425-I swear to you that before pic is what my hair looks like texture wise It is just like constant frizz or something like a cotton ball. It's a chore to get it to lie flat and even when it does you can still see that lil frizz somewhere

WhipEffectz1- My edges, ends and length (on the rare occasion it grows) is just like yours was. Uneven, ragged, bald in spots just crazy

To see how lovely your hair is now truly inspires me. I swear all week I have been feeling like maybe I am wasting my time. I felt that nothing will ever make my hair look any better but now I have a new outlook. I feel like if I really put in the dedication it will prosper. I just have to take my time and be patient.

Again ladies thanks for starting this thread, sharing your history and giving a sister a little inspiration:creatures

This pic is from September 2006. My hair was tore up from an at-home highlighting kit experiment. Never again :nono:. It was dry, brittle, and breaking all over the place.

My nape.
Feb. 2005

Feb. 2007. I need a more current progress pic.
back0207-3.jpg

I don't know what ya'll are doing to overcome these hurdles!! Girl, your hair really just progressed and its gorgeous! It seems not matter what I do, I cannot get my nape to stop being brittle and having breakage. I keep reading everyone's regimens and what worked for them but none of it is working for me.
Congrats to all of you ladies for being able to find what works for you and conquering your hair issues.
