Hi Ms Jadu,

Henna is a natural dye derived from the pigment of the henna bush/tree. The leaves are crushed into a powder form and then mixed with water, lemon juice or a combination of lemon juice and water to create a paste that is used for a number of purposes that include body art, hair conditioning and coloring and fabric dyeing.

In reference to hair, henna is a conditioner and colorant. There are a number of different things around referred to as henna, but for this purpose I am only speaking about 100% natural henna.

While one effect of henna is to loosen the curl pattern, this should be regarded as a slight loosening and should never be confused with a straightening of the hair. Henna won't do that and therefore should never been considered a straighten system.

How henna works is like a deep conditioning treatment when the henna is made into paste and applied to the hair and left on long enough for the henna to both condition and to color the hair. In order to do the coloring, the paste has to be made up...covered...and allowed to sit that way long enough to get good dye release. This can take about 8 hours.

Typically for coloring henna is used about once a month. People have used it more frequently. What is important when using henna as a deep conditioner, is that it still will require that you use a moisturizer after application. I use coconut oil and baobob oil applied to the wet hair right after rinsing out the henna. And I apply the oil to moistened hair daily.

Hope this helps.
