I feel you Blossssom, my bathroom is definitely my salon!!!lol I'm so thankful to be able to provide my hair with whatever it needs all by myself. My hair has never been this long or healthy in all of my years of going to the salon.

Yep I remeber the time I had to go to the salon weekly to get my hair washed and set. I was broke but I needed to do it because I did not know how to manage my hair. But once I got to college, I found myself having to choose between eating or getting my hair done  And I also noticed my hair was rather dry and not as healthy as it should be considering I am letting professionals handle it. Once I learned what my hair liked and disliked, it became so easy that it seemed like a waste to pay someone to do something that I could easily do at home. But I do go to salons to get services done such as trims, touch ups, and special occasion up-dos. And every once in a while I will treat myself and get a wash N set if I am very busy during the week.

Well my grandmother was/is a stylist so Ive been going basically since I started getting relaxers. But after I moved I could never find a decent stylist so I had been doing my own thing which turned out horrible. Then my cousin opened her shop and has been doing my hair for almost a year now and she's the best Ive found over here. But after going to her every 2 weeks then once this FL weather get to my hair it was a waste of money going so I just let her do my relaxers and trims and my hair is the longest its been in a long arse time. She notices how fast my hair is growing to every relaxer time too. My previous stylist had me cutting my hair at least twice a year because of split ends  not a trim but a cut above the ear style.   TG for LHCF! This board has helped out alot too with my hair routine.

I haven't been to the salon in going on 9 months. I was never satisfied with the job, so I do it myself. Please believe we some kitchen-ticians at my house...my mom went to cosmetology school for a while, so when I was relaxing, she did mine, and then I taught myself to do my own...along with my own trims, permanent color, blow outs and various rollersets. My mom and sisters still go to the salon to get some styles done, but I just don't trust anyone in my hair...

I only go to a hairdresser for special occasions. I think my hair can look really nice when I do it at home, but it looks more polished when I let a professional do it.

I have only been to a hair dresser/salon twice. Once to get it braided when I was about 12 (the braids were so tight, I cried) and the next time was for my wedding (I ended up being late for my own wedding because of that woman) My mother always did my hair, relaxing and plaiting. I think she had a bad experience with a hair dresser because she always taught us that it was hard finding a hair dresser that would care for your hair like it was their own. So I grew up thinking most hair dressers did more harm than good. I still love doing my own hair, braiding and all:grin: .
Mym mom was the same way-she had too many bad experiences with salons and the like. I've been to a shop probably 10 times (if that). I've had 2 bad experiences (getting burned by those dagoone Marcels). The other times were great, and she actually started me on the way to better haircare, because she used such great products on my hair and was so gentle with it. My mom has always been the one to do my relaxers, and I'm slowly learning to do them on my own...slooowly.

The only thing I see a stylist for is trims/cuts.

Ladies,

U DONT KNOW HOW GOOD IT FEELS TO BE FREE FROM HAIR DRESSERS!!!

I cant belive how much I relied on my HD to look after my hair. I used to go once every 2 weeks no fail. It was the only way I get get my hair straight, shiny on my own. I really cant thank this forum enough

I would pay about £30 $50 for a wash and set/tong.

What ever I did at home I just could replicate what the HD did, so I resulted to frying my hair to death everyday, and adding glue tracks.

I cant belive that now I wash my hair myself every week, and it comes out bouncy, shiney and healthy. its thicken up to the point I would never need tracks again.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!

The only reason I go to the shop is to get my touch up. I have learned so much about caring for my hair in the past couple of years, I realize that I don't need to do those weekly/biweekly visits to the salon. I love to do my hair, and I am saving a pretty penny (there's nothing wrong with that equation).

When my wedding day comes, or a truly special event is around the corner--then I will give my wonderful stylist a special visit. Other than that, viva la hair revolution!

I consider myself to be a stylist

I just love doing my own hair! And unfortunately, I've had enough negative experiences to not really trust anyone with my hair. But since chemical services will leave you bald if you don't know what you're doing, I will have to go have that done. But I will be very explicit in how I want my hair handled. Absolutely NO TRIMS even though my hair is not even at the nape.

I used to visit the Salon every two weeks due to the constant brainwashing of my stylist. Since coming to LHCF I only visit the Salon when I absolutely need a relaxer about every 12 to 14 weeks, and take care of my own hair in between.

I am also guilty of letting her trim everytime she feels the need without question. I have decided to take a break from Mr. Scissors for a good long while. I have joined the waist length challenge and would like to at least make a good attempt at it!

"constant brainwashing"

Before I used to go to the salon every week to get a wash and set. Since the hairdressers did not really take care of my hair, it would be so dry and brittle but i felt i had no choice because I did not know how to deal with my own hair. Finally, i found this forum and I realized how much money i could be saving and now my hair is healthier and I even have the hairdressers complement my hair. I only go salons now for hair trims and touch-ups.

Can I get a witness?????? Girl, I was 16 (1989) when I got my hair pressed for the first time for Graduation pictures...the chick burned my hair out...that was it./...never again. My sister decided to go to cosmetology school and I learned from her....shop can kissa mah buuutay... ($80 for a wash press and cut?)

Actually the more I went to teh hairdresser the more my hair broke off. Since I stopped going my hair has grown significantly. I haven't been to the hairdresser in over 2 years.

I've been my own hairdresser for almost three years because of disappointing salon experiences.

I made some mistakes at first. But since I found this forum, I learned so much about hair care and made changes for the better.

I used to only go to the salon for a relaxer and special occasions. The last time I went to the salon was Thanksgiving for a DC (which I could have done better at home). I am learning how to truly deal with my hair and I have little shedding in the shower even at 3 months post.

:lachen: You are so funny.

I love this thread!

I have been doing my own hair, and I love it. For one, I'm not a slave to the salon. I can do the styles I like, and not have to plan events around my appointments. Two, no more shelling out money. Three, nobody can love and care for my hair like me. I have seen nothing but improvements since coming here and putting the wisdom I get here into practice in my bathroom.
