Have yall seen the amp'd mobile commercial with the boyfriend and girlfriend sitting at the table. Her hair is SO CUTE!!! She's my hair idol
I like that commercial to but what was up with the guy sitting next to her:ohwell:

i've noticed black women/people in ads thru the years.

it used to be:
the boys had dreads.
the girls wore braids.
the women wore braids.
the men wore boxes.

most of the time, anyway.

then the boys and men wore low cuts and the women and girls were all lighter hues with super curly, bouncy hair.

now its moved back to darker skin-tones but everyone is natural with big hair. rarely do you see straighter styles. it also seems the heavier the woman, the darker the skin tone. i can only recall one tv commercial right now where the women was a lighter shade and was actually thick-thighed (its a febreeze commerical).

i rather like seeing the naturals but give me a break. i'm sick of seeing black women being portrayed as one of three looks.

i think advertisers want to make huge differences in culture on tv. they don't want to leave anyone guessing at who they are trying to portray in their ads, which usually results in everyone (even other cultures/races) looking, sounding and acting the same stereotypical way.

the commercials that drive me up a wall are the home depot commercials on the radio. there's always a 'attitude-laden' black woman talking about fixing her home. a lot of "you know thats right" and "thats what i'm talking about". as if we are always speaking "jive" to let people know we mean business. so tired.

advertising is my major right now. and i hope to help break down these stereotypes.

Yep and she stuck out like a sore thumb to me....that goes to show how narrowly commercials are casted these days.

All the naturals I see in commercials have a variety of textures and look nice. The McDonald's lady looks nice! I have no idea what commercials your watching:confused:

To many natural styles mean free flowing and very little manipulation. Some call that unkept...I call it free!

So, now Imma be on the look out for matted Negroe-Ringlets stuck to a black girl's head:ohwell:

In regards to who's cast in these commercials...Lemme give you some insights.

Often times a person like myself is hired. I gather a group of people together different age groups and from varied occupations. I show them a video of a proposed commercial in cartoon form and sometimes live. I show them several commercials. Then I asked for them to fill out feedback:
  1. Which Commercial did you like?
  2. What stood out in your mind?
  3. Did you understand the product?
  4. Which scenerio did you relate to best?
  5. Which actor/actress did you like best?
Without revealing my clients I can tell you that about 90% of the time if the actress is black and has natural hair, she scores the highest.

Just my 2 cents

I do know what you are talking about and i guess it depends on what commercial it is. (I don't watch TV much anymore.) But sometimes their hair is not a NEAT natural. Sort of a look as if she hadn't combed in two days.

I thought she looked FABULOUS!!! I even called my daughter over so that she could see her. Her WHOLE look (hair, clothes...just overall style) was well put together![/quote

Tamika Ray always looks nice to me. She has hosted shows on SOAPnet, E! and a lot of entertainment shows.

I was just thinking the other day about the black Vonage girl ("With VONAGE, you can......"). In the first couple of commercials she had a wash shake and go that was a little above her ear I think. Now it's grown a loooot. But it's sticking straight out of her head all around. It looks nice and healthy though! :D

I do notice how most of the female AA models tend to have natural hair. While it's a little one sided, I do like the fact that natural hair is being given the spotlight.

DrMiracles is one business I'm really angry with!

There is an ad in Vibe Vixen with Kelis on the cover where a pretty girl with beautiful hair says "she needs a miracle". That's racist, stupid and ignorant. Why does she need a relaxer-miracle when her hair is growing, healthy and thick?

Black people are sometimes so hateful to themselves :nono:

Why present a natural black woman as something ugly - she needs a Miracle to save her from looking black. Wow!
I saw that ad too...and I agree!

Or the Burger King Commercial with the Chicken who wants to be a French Fry, the French Fries are obviously Black and they are the "wrong crowd". I know I may be reading too much into these but it still gets on my nerves

The other commercial that gets on my nerves is the Playstation commercial with the Mexican sounding dust balls & Black sounding squirrels:mad:

I totally agree but I laughed out loud when I read what you typed..:lachen:

There's an ad in a black hair magazine (and maybe others) where it says, "If you think in terms of good and bad hair.. the problem isn't ON your head."

I loved that. Unfortunately, I don't remember the hair product being advertised.

My husband hates natural hair. He thinks anyone that walks around with their hair looking like that is jacked up. During the girlfriends episode last night, he could not believe the commentator with the natural do giving make up and dress tips during the breaks would be on television with such a jacked up head. I thought she looked ok.

Her hair was ok but she needs LCHF!! It didnt look healthy

The Pantene relaxed and natural commercial bothers me (you know the one with "a lovley day" playing in the background) and not because the hair looks bad
I'm just insulted they are trying to tell me its real
It sure is "a lovely weave" though:lol:
yea the black hair care ads with weaves on the models should be required to say they won't work on real hair at least in small print

the mickey d's commerical i am talking about is the one about a juicy sandwich and the lady is shakin her head like she on that stuff and at the end of the commerical she has mayo on the corner of her mouth.

She's pretty and her hair looks fine! IMO!

The girl's hair doesn't but me that much, but I think it's gross that grown people have ranch dressing (or whatever the sauce is) on the corners of their mouths! I want to reach through the TV with some paper towels!:perplexed

ITA.
Dr. Miracles is notorious for those ignorant ads. I cringe everytime I see one. But then again, they're in the business to "sell relaxers", which is ok, but goodness, portraying natural thick hair (albeit dry) & saying "she needs a miracle" is really uncalled for. Of course I didn't know that lady from a bug on the wall, but from what I could see, she didn't "NEED" a relaxer... she didn't need anything. Ok, well, maybe she needed some moisturizer, but that was it!!!

That sandwich isn't all that anyway. Juicy? Naw. That was the driest sandwich I ever threw my money away on. She did look a tad crazy. She was the only one going overboard with it.

I feel the same way. I will never buy Dr. Miracles anything.

There's a Zappos add, although I think it's just a teased relaxed hairstyle-looks like a big HOT MESS.

I usually see some great natural hair on TV (or at least natural looking).

Oh, THAT one???!
I thought she was adorable!! I loved everything about her look! Even the shape of her nose, lol!!

They need to come on here and get some models. We will show them how good natural hair looks. For the most part, I always see nice natural styles in print.

That commercial is a disgrace, I shake my head everytime I see it, that is just about as bad as asuming that all White women talk with a valley girl accent. I don't talk like that, nobody I know talks like that:mad:

Most of these commercials annoy me, because they are a contrived/failed attempt at uplifting black folk.

The worst ones come on when you are watching Soul Train...SMH

I noticed that too when I saw that B.K. commercial. As far as the playstation commercial, everytime they would come on I wondered why they had to sound like that.

Is this the Tamika Ray that some of you are referring to? She looks beautiful IMO.
