Well getting braids or doing the big chop just keep you from manipulating the two different textures on your head. I wouldn't say they prevent shedding at all. Especially when you take your braids down, you'll have all of the shedded hair that normally comes out with braids.

I would say be very careful when combing your hair b/c of the two different textures. Any style that doesn't require a lot of manipulation is great. Once you have a decent amount of new growth, only comb while wet with a wide tooth comb.

I mainly transitioned with braids so sorry I can't help much.

I asked this same question on Saturday!! I am transitioning also.

Now, what I got out of the people that replied to my message is the following:
1. No you don't have to do a big chop
2. No you don't have to get braids
3. Keep your hair moisturized ALOT.
4. Create a good regimine that includes deep conditioner and protein conditioners.
5. Make sure you get your regular trims.

This is what I am gollowing, I am using all Nexxus products and everynight I put on a leave in conditioner, then oil before wrapping up my hair.

My stylist told me that I had to either chop it off or get braids. I refuse to do either and based off of the responses and pictures from this board, I don't have to!! :-)

I have been transitioning for two years now. I wash and braid my hair in about 16 braids once a week. I airdry overnight and unbraid the next day. Then I wear a braidout for the whole week. This has been a very low maintenence way for me to transition. Whenever I want straight hair I blowdry and flat iron. To prevent shedding/breakage, use only a K Cutter comb for detangling and a denman d3 brush for smoothing the hair. I also use regular conditioner as a leave in before braiding my hair and a little oil on the ends.
