Well, I decided to take my daughter to a different stylist yesterday to get her hair relaxed (touchup) because my stylist was unable to fit her in this weekend. My Mom goes to this Dominican woman for her touchups (relaxer and color), and she told me that she's very good.

Well, OK.... first of all I asked her if she would use Mizani for Sensitive Scalps because although my stylist has been using the Mizani Regular on her hair, I noticed that it had been causing a lot of scalp irritation... she said sure, no problem...

Well, they based her scalp really well, but when it came time to put the relaxer in, I was watching from the front of the salon, and at first everything seemed fine... she was putting the relaxer on the new growth only. Well, after that, she started to smooth it, and I noticed that it was looking like she was putting the relaxer on the length of her hair!!

OH BOY!!! Well, she then washed it out, and then sat her with conditioner in her hair for a while.

Then she washed that out and set her hair. My daughter wanted her to blow it out after taking the rollers out (to straighten it), so she did, but I noticed that her hair was looking dry, not shiny and soft like it's supposed to look after a rollerset!

Well, THEN she used the curling iron to bump the ends under... I thought that was way too much heat... When my stylist blows my hair out after a rollerset, he just takes the round brush and bumps the ends under while he's blowing it!! There's never any need for a curling iron...

Well, her hair is okay, but it feels HARD. I think she used some kind of crispy setting lotion when she set her hair... that's probably why it wasn't soft when she was blowing it out

!!

Anyway I've learned my lesson. Next time we'll definitely wait for my stylist. So far he is the ONLY one I know of in our area who puts relaxer on the new growth only, and doesn't run it on the whole length!!

I just had to vent!!

I agree! Twice I went to different salons where literally pieces of my hair was breaking as she blow dried and stlyed. I always like to watch how the person works before I allow them to do my hair.

Oh, I forgot to add that as we were driving up to the salon, the stylist was walking across the parking lot and I said to my daughter, oh there she is!! My daughter took one look at her and said. Eeeew!!! That's her??!! Her hair was a fake looking bright red color, and it looked so dry...

That should have been my cue to burn rubber out of there!!

Same with my stylist. Amazing what a skilled person can do with a blowdryer in 1 hand and a round brush in the other. I'm all thumbs... But the round brushes pull out too much of my fine hair to get blowouts very often, so I'm weaning off them.

Back on topic, I get scared reading these bulletins of doom right before starting my spring/summer tour of Boston area Dominican salons.

Just as I'm fixin' to saddle up with my Salerm 21 and Nacidit olive oil conditioner, you're calling a retreat?

I prolly won't let anyone new relax my hair this summer. I'll just go in for $22 rollersets to minimize the risk.

I already know not all dominicans can do hair...I too had a bad experience....One so-called stylist did the most effed up rollerset on my hair...She did not even comb my ends out all the way before rolling them onto the roller...Anyhoo, I ended up with frizzy dry ends that had to be cut off.

I wanted to jump her in that salon, but I should have listened to my inner voice telling to me wait for my regular stylistl...I am just sorry this had to happen to your daughter's hair. I know that next time you will waid for her regular stylist.

. Cause you know what, one little "mistake" can set you back for months and I can't risk that

Are you guys sure that these were Dominicans? I made this mistake once and my hair came out looking a hot mess. I now live a little further up in NY in Nyack about 30 minutes from the city. I saw a place near my house and figure why keep driving the 30 minutes into Manhattan if there is a Dominican salon near me. Well I found one or so I thought. They were Puerto Rican not Dominican. My hair looked a mess. They rolled my hair in an upward direction and dried it like this and when they took them down they used the round brush and tried to blow it under. I was like what the hell are they doing. Neeless to say my hair was Bone straight. The same result that I would have had if I just washed and blew my hair and didn't curl it or anything. My hair was a bone straight hot mess!

My lesson is to make sure they are Dominican first and don't be too lazy to take that 30 minute drive to Manhattan.

This woman who did my hair was Dominican.......But we are saying that not all Dominicans do hair well....It's like saying that all AAs have rhythm and can dance, and I know some AAs who cannot dance to save their life. I just used that as an analogy....

I know what you meant. I was just making sure that you knew for sure she was Dominican but since you do know that then she was just a bad stylist. I'm sure all Domincans can't do hair well. Thank goodness I haven't run across one yet. I just will NEVER go to a Puerto Rican stylist again.

That's why when I find one like my stylist who knows and cares for my hair, I stick with them......If she is out, I will wait for her to return as long as it not more than week...When she goes away for more than a week, I use my sister's stylist as a backfill because I have seen her work...

I do not think some women take this matter serious enough, but we all learn from our mistakes.....

I certainly agree. Most of the Dominican shops out here have only one or two licensed stylist.. the rest of them are bootleg. I found out the hard way. I went for a set and blow out and my hair was so frizzy and about five different chics were in my hair.. Never again.
