You could always buy the 5 in 1 and bring it with you. Betcha' she'd be very surprised you even have it!! Fortunately, no additional conditioning is necessary after rinsing out your normalizing shampoo.

As with any relaxer, you will need to handle your hair gently after the process is completed. Just make sure that you do a reconstructor/protein treatment followed by a deep conditioning treatment, the NEXT time you wash your hair.

I usually use Emergencee the next wash after a relaxer. What deep conditioning treatment do you recommend?

I can't say that one treatment is better than another. It's a matter of preference I guess....as long as it's a strengthening treatment....reconstructor or protein. I normally make a Nexxus Omni pack for chemically damaged hair...if my memory serves me right, it consists of equal parts of emergencee, epitome, and hemectress.

Well, after the one time my stylist didn't have the 5 in 1, we had a looooong talk and she agreed that I can bring my own products for touchups (and pretty much any other service now, I take my own stuff, no problem). Like most things, it's a matter of communication and sometimes, just asking. I pay the regular price for services but don't care 'cause they use MY products.

I'm so bad now, I take my own set of magnetic rollers and after they rollerset, I skip the dryer and go home where I either air dry or sit under MY dryer on cool setting = zero heat!

BTW, they LOVE me now because even though I MAKE them do it MY way (I'm kinda of a "difficult" client, can you tell?) it's cheaper and easier on them -- they don't use any of their products and I don't even take up a dryer chair anymore!

You may just ask and be pleasnatly surprised as I was . . .

I've gotten up the nerve to order the Affirm relaxer system on my own (http://www.irbysbeautysupply.com/Affirm.html) and have me and a friend (the experienced one) use it on a friend's hair. I'm glad to hear that it's not exactly just Affirm that's the culprit for a lot of ppl's thinning hair, but it's the skipping of steps that hurts the hair.

Question: Does anyone know how much of the relaxer tub to use for a retouch? Since I'm getting the 4lb one, do I use it all? Or will I end up saving the rest or throwing it away? Anyone try adding olive oil? And where can I find the Protecto online?

When retouching your hair, use enough to process your new growth only. Someone else posted before about Affirms shelf life. I do not remember but it was quite some time that it would last. So do not throw it away. I would reecommend somewhere cool like a basement. Also I got my Protecto from www.sheldeez.com

I am strongly considering purchasing the Affirm Fiberguard Relaxer System for my next touch up and bringing it to the salon (my stylist uses Elucence). My hair has thinned so much and I have NO plausible explanation why. I take such good care of my hair that my only guess is it has something to do with the chemical process. So I wanna switch to the cadillac of of relaxers.

They were mainly talking about the Conditioning Relaxer System and how the 5 in 1 reconstructor or Positive link were mandatory steps to prevent damage.

Anywhoo, does anyone know if the Sustenance Fortifying Treatment (Step 3) is sufficient for the crucial reconstructing step previous posters were talking about in this thread.

Affirm caused major breakage to my hair 7 years ago. Every day I would have so much strands of hair in the comb. I thought that it was the stylist not washing the relaxer out of my hair completely. I had another competent stylist put it in and I had the same problem.

I think it depends on your hair. Affirm thinned my hair out. It also made it too straight. It was limp and wouldn't hold curls. I had to switch to Mizani for fine hair. It did much better with the Mizani. I could even wash and go after using it for a year or so. But my mom has used Affirm for years with no problem. But now that I think about it her hair is really thick. It's still thick now just less bulky. Her ends don't look thin and she trims every other relaxer which she gets done whenever she can't take it anymore. She's not on a set schedule with hair appts and doesn't wash her hair in between. If your hair is thriving with Affirm then keep it up. If not, try something else.

OMG!!!!!! My stylist changed to Affirm a few years ago and over time I noticed my hair thinning out, but could not figure out why. It was definitely too strong for my hair. The end results were skinny hair. I have not had a perm since September 2007. Before then, I use to have really thick hair. I figured that it was the perm in September and decided to go natural. My hair is definitely thicker and there is way less shedding and breakage. I do use the Indian oils and MN, but I think if I were still getting perms with Affirm, it would yield the same results.

Affirm is a good relaxer to use if you want your hair bone straight. The only reason your hair is thin at the ends, is because they were relaxed with Affirm and it is bone straight.

I noticed that when I use at home relaxers compared to going to a salon, my hair is thicker. As of right now, I have six months worth of thick hair, because I have been using at home relaxers...not because I think they are better but because I have been broke. The bottom half of my hair, about the last four inches, are a lot thinner, because that is the hair that was relaxed at the salon.

Its so weird, but I noticed it when I was putting curlers in my hair the other day. I parted about an inch of hair at the top of my head and held it straight up. There was a VERY distinct difference between the thickness of my hair.

Thats why its best to find a relaxer that you like and stick with it. I have to fight against breakage everyday because of the two hair patterns going on right now.

It's whatever preference that you have...do you want your hair bone straight or do you want to keep a little curl/wave pattern to it. Whatever you decide stick with that method. Your hair will prosper either way, as long as you take care of it.

Today I went to get a touch up at a salon that my friend suggested. The stylist was helpful and my hair was beautiful and silky soft , but to the point...

The first thing the stylist did when I sat in the chair was take down my ponytail and examine my hair. She asked about my thin ends; I told her that I did not know what caused it, but I was trying to keep them healthier.

I asked the stylist what kind of relaxer she used, she told me that she used a relaxer called Silky Touch. I told her that I've never heard of it, and she told me that a lot of stylists don't use it because it is more expensive than using a relaxer that comes in a tub.

When she asked me what relaxer I've used before, I told her that the stylist I usually go to uses Affirm. Long pause. "Umm, is Affirm bad?"

She tells me that Affirm works well for some people, but it causes thinning of the hair for the people that it doesn't work for. She said that after examining my hair, she thinks that is what happened to me. She told me to stop using Affirm and to gradually cut off the hair that was relaxed with Affirm, and my hair should start looking thicker and healthier.

Has anyone ever heard this about Affirm? My hair IS thinner than it used to be, but I thought that it was other mistakes that I was making with my hair.

Also, has anyone ever used Silky Touch relaxer? I like the way my hair turned out. (I wish I had a digital camera so I could show you how pretty my hair came out!!) But, I also liked the way my hair turned out with Affirm.

Any input??

Actually... one of the two stylists I have ever really trusted with my hair told me the same thing. She won't use it in her salon because she said it's a crap shoot whether or not it will work on a client's hair and she can't deal with not knowing how the client's hair will come out.

I haven't dealt with Affirm since I posted this thread. Now I go to a stylist who uses Mizani Sensitive Scalp and believes in giving a really good deep conditioner before trimming so that she won't have to do any excess end-trimming.

I've used many relaxers over the years...MANY YEARS....tellin' me age now...Ultra-Sheen, Revlon Realistic, Optimum, Bantu, Elasta, Raveen, At-One, Vigorol, Dudley's, more...I can't remember...ending with Affirm.

Here's an important note about AFFIRM. Many salons try to cut their overhead cost when administering an AFFIRM relaxer by skipping the reconstructor step BEFORE neutralizing. AVOIDANCE OF THIS STEP over time will cause the hair to thin out. It is crucial that for thin hair, you use the 5-1 Reconstructor, or for med/thick/coarse hair, you use the Posi-Link Reconstructor BEFORE neutralizing.

I too experienced thinning, but I liked the results of the relaxer. I ordered the product myself and found that extra step through reading Avlon's instructions. I WAS MAD!!! Anyway, I started doing my own, and over time, I could see my thickness returning. I pay VERY close attention to the timing of it on my head.

Guess my hair doesn't go through any dryness because I moisturize and condition the h*&"l out of my hair daily.

....However, a coupla "pusha's" here have peaked my curiousity about PHYTO. I read the materials about it (thanks to LCHF members with many links). Sounds like a more natural product with great results.

I have been using Affirm Sensitive Scalp relaxers for YEARS and i really did not pay attention to my hair thinning out. But next time i go get my hair touch-up i will ask my stylist her opinion on this relaxer. But THNAKS for this IMPORTANT info, very helpful!!

Wow good to know, I was about to try the Affirm too! Whew, not now, my hair has thinned out over the years, but I can't relate that to Affirm. I too have tried different relaxers on my hair and I always use Mild because of my color.

I was wondering about that, too. I don't use Affirm anymore. I have noticed the entire length of hair that was relaxed by the affirm was much thinner than the hair that has been relaxed in the last year.

I know I will be trimming it off gradually over time.

All of Affirms relaxers come with a conditioning step before you neutralize the hair. Stylist should not be charging extra for that service. It is apart of the whole process. I know because we use this in the salon that I work in and had a work shop on it to make sure we used it properly. They also come with a proctectant to use before the relaxing process to use on the hair that is already straight. If your stylist are charging extra, then find a new stylist that is not money hungry.

I have used Affirm on myself and I like it, but it does get the hair bone straight. And since I already have soft, fine hair, I think I am going back to my mizani relaxer or I may try the Mizani butter smooth line. I have heard that it makes the hair feel like silk. This I gotta feel.

yeah ok um this is making me mad my EX hairdresser in the 10 years i went to her never used any Protecto on my hair before relaxing...wtf!!!! so damn cheap urgh!
