Newbie Support Challenge,Soulie's Team: Relaxed & Fine

Oh no, I thought the Nexxus Humectress was a DC  Thanks for the heads up Aspire. If it's not a DC then that would explain my light airy hair that I had on Saturday turning into dry brittle hair this morning. I cowashed with the Nexxus Humectress this morning. It's still a little damp but I think I'm doing better now.

Any suggestions for a DC with Ceramides, ladies?

And I did use a Heat protectant (Nexxus Heat Protexx). I also used GVP PM The Conditioner and PM Straight Works.

Yeah, your results are exactly what happens to me when I get that light/airy result. I have to admit, I still struggle with the deep conditioner thing. Most of them have been a waste of money for me. I am still testing them out.

Oh right . . . update. I am sitting here at my pc with a brahmi/maka/honey tea in my hair. It has been there since about 6PM yesterday evening. I have not yet had a chance to rinse out. Once I rinse, I will use ION EC, then BBCO moisture and Amla/CO to seal.

hi Aspire!
i just started using indian teas, as well (amla, brahmi, shikakai) but have never let it sit that long because of how it dries up...even though i oil my scalp before putting it on and add hemp oil to the powder mix.:perplexed

please share how your hair turns out after you finish!

thanks!!!

Have you tried to do the strand test where you pull your hair to see how it breaks.

I did a strand test prior to washing my hair while it was wet and it stretched a little and then if broke. After I was done styling my hair it didn't break. So, I thought I was in the clear and had possibly reached the protein/moisture balance. But now I think that it may have made my hair too strong!

three to four days before a relaxer should be fine but I wouldn't recommend leaving it any sooner to the relaxer date, I'd probably do a DC after the co-wash too, if your hair is too dry this could cause breakage when you relax, I hth

@Mercie, I co-sign with Angel, 3 to 4 days you should be fine. I hope I'm not too late though. Let us know how the relaxer goes.

IntheMix, how long have you been using the humectress? Are you aware they recently changed their formula? The old formula (the one I love) comes with a grey lid with light grey writing on the bottle and is a cone free conditioner, the new one would have a black lid and writing and comes loaded with cones which synthetically coats the hair strands and could prevent moisture getting to the shaft. This could also be a reason why it hasn't worked for you.

I've only recently been using the Nexxus Humectress, maybe 2-3 months and I love it. So, I believe that it's the new formula that I'm using. I have the one with the darker lid and I guess my hair doesn't mind the cones because I started using it after my Novemeber No-lye relaxer when my hair was not responding to any moisturizing conditioners, but once I tried the Humectress, my hair was revitalized. So, I'm pretty sure that it works for me. I'm just hoping that the extra time that I spend underneath the dryer with it aren't futile because it's not deep conditioning my hair...

Thanks for adding me to the team Angel!
Hi everyone, looking forward to learning together.

As for the moisture/protein issue, I thought I had it figured out this summer. My hair was super soft but still with great body and texture. I was using protein DC every week and all my products had protein. I live in a humid climate so it worked great to balance the moisture in the air.

Now that it's cold and dry outside, my hair is hard and breaks easily. I had to completely change my routine and only do protein DC once a month now. I had to also change my leave-in to one with more moisture and cut back on use of cones. As Angel mentioned, they block moisture and were keeping my hair from absorbing my moisturizer.

Still trying to get the balance right for winter with the cold dry winds. I have found that as much as I like wearing my hair out in low mani styles, I am going to have to adopt some true protective (ie ends tucked in) styles to get through winter with my hair intact and growing.

Hi jasminea and :welcome: I think that I'm finding that the same thing is happening to me. My hair could take way more protein in the summer months than it's able to take now. Maybe we can share notes and try to figure this out. What type of relaxer (lye or no-lye) do you use?

Thanks for the co-sign on the dryness, Aspire. When I was using a lye relaxer I really like NTM Deep Recovery Mask as a moisturizing DC. Even now, I enjoy using it for a co-wash here and there. The only reason why I've shyed away from it is because it doesn't have the ceramides that I need to combat the calcium buildup that I get from using a No-Lye relaxer. If you use a Lye Relaxer maybe you could try it as a DC.

Could you explain what the brahmi/maka/honey tea is for? I've never heard of it. Also, what's ION EC and BBCO?

hi Jasminea! which products do you use without the cones?:ohwell:

thank you!

I have cut back on my use of cones but not cut them out all together. :perplexed I was using a serum and liquid shine spray both full of cones almost every day which worked great in summer.

Now I use a wave nouveau moisturizing finishing mist to moisturize followed by either coconut oil or aphogee essential oils. This has really made a difference in the dry feel and breakage. I still do the serum or liquid shine if I am one or so days away from my wash because I love the shine I get from these products .

Hi IntheMix08! I go the the salon every 12-14 weeks for my relaxer and she uses Design Essential Sensitive Scalp (I am pretty sure it has lye).

Right now my hair is in love with the Lustrasilk shea butter/mango cholesterol. Does amazing things to the texture of my hair when starts breaking. My hair was sooooo dry at start of the year that when I left this in overnight it did not make my hair soggy just well moisturized. This however is not something I can overnight condition with often because last time I left it on for just 1 hour and my hair was over moisturized and mushy. So it is my go to for very dry hair and after my winter protein treatments.

Even great moisturizing products can be overkill for fine hair if left on too long just make it limp and lifeless. :nono:

Does anyone have any photos of protective styles you do? I hate the way a regular bun looks on me because mine is so small! I like french braids with ends tucked under and a bang, but would love some ideas if any of you have a style to share.

Hi Ladies,

There are two new members of relaxed & Fine, Jasminea and Grow, :welcome:
ladies, it's great to have you with us.

Grow: could you PM me your regimen please? I'd like to add it to the list.

so far this is how we have voted, I need Jasminea and grows' vote on what topic we're going to focus on next week, if you could get that to me by Saturday, that would be great, the choices are:

shedding/breakage: 3
relaxer stretching:1
self relaxing:1

I'm in the process of putting together some more threads/articles regarding protein, moisture and products too. I don't think we have covered enough ground in these areas yet and I know there is more information that can help us out there, although we can always revisit some of our topics or look at them from different angles. I should have it ready by friday evening

Hey Ladies.

Sorry for the late response InTheMix. Work has been CRAZY.

Anyway, the tea is my Ayurveda mixture. I use Ayurveda powders to make teas and pastes. The brahmi/maka is a conditioning tea, but I have a cleansing one as well made with cleansing powders. I am not by any means an expert, but the board has several. If you PM Flowinlocks, she can tell you the recipe for the teas. I used hers as the base for mine. This blog, is by the LHCFer who does all the challenges. It has a LOT of info on the powders, pastes, and teas. The pastes are messy, but the teas are very easy. I would STRONGLY suggest that if you are going to try it, that you READ, READ, READ. These powders have some serious effects and you don't want adverse results. Try one powder at a time, or try KalpiTone. It is a mixture of several powders at the right proportions and it makes a great tea.

Here is some starter info as well if you want to learn more.

As for the ION EC, it is a conditioning treatment. ION Effective Care. I think it is a Sally's product. I LOVE it. I use it after I clense with tea, because it is SOOOO moisturizing. It is a veg protein treatment, so it is not as harsh as animal protein, but you would think I just moisturized after using it on my hair.

BBCO is Bonner Brothers Caster Oil moisturizer. I just found started using this and I a trying it for 30 days. I need something to keep my NG manageable and so far this is working. I use it at night on my NG only and then seal with my Castor/Amla oil mix (amla is also Ayurveda).

For me, Ayurveda is the foundation to my regimen. I used it to cleanse, condition, strengthen (henna), color (indigo), shine (cassia) and oil (amla). My hair has gotten so much healthier since I started.

OK - Long book reply, but I hoped it helped.

It sure is :lachen:

I nearly thought I got into the wrong thread too as I couldn't see certain posts, I think it may have been because we've moved up a page in thread.

Here goes guys, I'm hoping some of this info will be useful to you and may help to get the moisture/protein balance locked down. I've tried to group them although some cross over with the other headings

Last night, I clarified my hair with Vo5 Tea Clarifying Shampoo, then I added Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor for 2 minutes, Washed my hair with Nexxus Therappe (2 lathers). I "DCed" with my Nexxus Humectress for over an hour. I rinsed and Rollerset my hair and sat under the dryer for about 45 minutes. Pin curled my hair.

All of this was in preparation for a corrective relaxer that I plan to do on Monday night. When I cowashed my hair the other day I realized that there are about 2-3 inches of underprocessed hair at my roots and I want/need to fix it.

@Aspire: Thanks for the clarification of those acronyms. After trying to look at those links, I realize I don't no anything about Ayurveda :giggle:

@grow: :welcome4: to our team!

To All: Is it safe to say that Ceramides are a substitute for protein for those who use no-lye relaxers?

THANK YOU ANGEL AND INTHEMIX08 FOR THE WARM WELCOME!!!

and that question about the Ceramides is a really good one!
i JUST found out about the protein....had no idea about the Ceramides! lol!
ok, i just joined lhcf earlier this month and i'm already obsessed! I NEVER KNEW SOOOOO MANY THINGS I'M LEARNING ABOUT HERE AND WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU LADIES!!!

as for the list of questions.....keeping it down to 10 isn't easy, but here goes:

1. what really is the difference between texlaxing and relaxing?
(i self relax, the no lye "just for me" kid's version)

2. how to do the protein thing without breakage & hard hair when you know you really need alot of protein.

3. how to rollerset without getting puffy roots.

4. how to successfully grow out our hair (do those miracle growth products really work for anybody?)

5. how to use "make your own" products successfully (like adding silk amino acids, keratin protein, collagen, hydrolyzed wheat protein, etc...to products you like....or simply making one suited for your needs)

6. how do we trim our own hair successfully, especially once it's past our neck where we used to be able to "see" it. (a "trim" by a stylist who was sissor happy resulted in me having 4 inches chopped off in '08...never again....i really would prefer to do it myself now.)

7. do we "have" to use heat when dc'ing or can we just let it sit under a regular plastic cap longer?

8. how do we perm AND color without losing or damaging our hair? (especially delicate areas like nape, edges, etc...)

9. how to we get that "i just washed my hair" look days after the process meaning how can we get "the salon look" while styling our own hair?

10. do we need to oil our scalps nightly?

thank you, again, for letting me join in!
i really look forward to our collective goal achieving!!!

Hi Grow and welcome!

Fantastic list of questions, I can't think of anything that has not already been addressed by you and the other ladies.

As for your question about rollersetting without the puffy roots, I rollerset my hair overhand (or at least I think that is what it's call). Basically instead of rolling hair under I roll it over so that roller is flat and tight against new growth. Works great when stretching. When you roll hair over the normal way it adds a lot of body at roots that I don't care for. :nono:

Second pic below is my rollerset, you still get body throughout the hair but roots lay down.

I'm posting my list, I'll do a full list with all our topics on them and put them in the first post so that it's easy to find. BTW: my list is in no particular order

@ intheMix: this thread may help to answer your question

http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=268981
This thread is about oils that contains ceramides

It was actually that thread (Just had an epiphany: lye vs. no lye ,protein vs. ceramides) that got me thinking that I could stop using protein and focus on Ceramides.

I think I'm going to test it out. I'll be leaving protein treatments out of my regimen for a while to see if my hair is ok with that.

I did a prepoo on dry hair for an hour with amla oil mixed w/nexxus keraphix (the bottle is done and this is the last time I'll be using this), washed with aubrey organics island naturals and DC'd with nexxus humectress mixed w/aloe vera oil.

I'm about to go and moisturize it with some quemet burdock root butter cream and seal it with hot 6 oil.

I think I'll twist my hair tonight.

I just thought I'd share with you guys that a big part of my hair journey is to ensure I'm using the best hair products I can find. I've been getting into the product ingredient thing but there is still so much I don't know about regarding that area. I have identified that I no longer want to be using products that contain the following: silicones/cones, mineral oil, petrolatum, parabens, sulfates and animal proteins.

currently, my amla oil (dabur) has mineral oil in it but I'm not too worried about this as I only use it to prepoo but I would like to find a brand that doesn't contain it. My aphogee 2 min has mineral oil, petrolatum and at least 2 cones that I could identify, I will be replacing this with AO GPB conditioner when it's finished which will be soon but I will also be looking for another mild protein con to use in between neutralizing and rinsing on relaxer day. My aphogee hard protein treatment contains animal protein and cones and smells terrible so I'm looking for a new hard protein treatment. I use roux porosity control to protect my hair on relaxer day only so I don't mind that this contains a couple of parabens. My hair doesn't dislike cones and there are some water soluable cones that are not too bad and virtually every heat protectant contains them so I don't need to cut them out completely but I won't be DCing with any cone filled conditioners anytime soon.

Other than the ones mentioned above, the rest of my products are free of the ingredients I'm avoiding. My hair feels better for it and is softer as a result and truly gets moisturized opposed to just getting coated.

That's the only thing I could find on the subject :perplexed sorry.

I think this is a good idea, by putting it to the test you could find out if your hair is senitive to protein or different types of protein, it could be this that is preventing you from getting your P/M balance right. If your starts to struggle without protein you can add it back into your regimen gradually and try different types of protein too.

I did my corrective on Monday and my hair feels better. So, I'm happy. I wore my hair out yesterday and today but I'll probably be bunning up for the rest of the week and adding some moisture to my ends each night.

My hair and I have been fighting all winter, but after trying baggying we have finally made up. I roll my ends with one large flexi-rod and baggy the flexi-rod "bun" overnight. My hair feels like it did in the warm humid summer months, soft conditioned and bouncy. I am a new fan of baggying, at least for the winter months!

A lot of the breakage I was getting apparently was from dryness because since baggying I have not seen any more small broken pieces when I moisturize and seal. YEAH!

Have you ladies tried any new techniques for conditioning that has worked well for you? (ie prepoos, honey, molassas, overnight DC, etc)

Jasminea, I'm glad that baggying solved your breakage and dryness issue. I've heard a lot of people talking about on here but, I've never tried it. I used to pre-poo with Burts Bee Avocado Pre-shampoo treatment for added moisture. But I wasn't a fan of it. I'm not sure if it was the product or the technique but I didn't notice a difference in my hair's moisture. :ohwell:

How is everyone else doing this week? Any hair plans for the weekend?
