Newbie Needs Encouragement from 4a/bs

Hi guys. I’m a newbie (well sort of). I’ve been lurking since last August. You ladies are the best hair buddies I could ever have. My friends and family think I’m nuts for spending so much energy on my hair. Especially when I could just “buy some hair.”
I’m totally getting impatient when it comes to waiting for growth! My hair has never grown past my chin--EVER. Currently the back is at the base of my neck. So I'm making progress. It’s definitely healthier than before. But I want more length! (Totally impatient!)

Have any of you fine-haired 4a/bs successfully rebounded from short, fragile hair to healthy shoulder length or beyond tresses? If so, how long did it take you?

Hope this question hasn’t been asked a million times already!

Thanks Ladies

Welcome, Tweezer6

Ask all the questions you want! I'm 4 a/b and growing up I never thought my hair could even get to the length it is right now (shoulder length). Now that I think back to all the stuff I did to it- it's obvious why it wasn't getting any longer. If I never imagined it could get to shoulder length and it did, who knows how long it'll get now that I'm taking better care of it. My hair was cut to just above chin length in October by a SHS and now it's at my shoulders. The very back section of my hair (which was damaged from relaxer overlapping) just needs to catch up now. I've been wearing braids and that works best for me.

Are you doing protective styles(ie. braids) that'll take your mind off of you hair for awhile?

Hi. I've NEVER EVER had hair past chin before last year. I always seem to have major breakage issues. I think I have it under control now though I still see about 5-10 broken hairs a day. It used to be about 25 -30 before LHCF. But the key for me was/is little or no manipulation. I had my hair in tree braids and sew ins for an entire year and voila my hair grew. So now, I keep it moisturized in buns, phony ponies, and quick weaves. I currently have 2 inches on new growth in 2 months! I'm looking forward to relaxing next weekend. Be encouraged, if my hair can grow anybody's hair can!!!

Thanks for the welcome CandiceC!

Stories like yours are what I need to hear. I had kind of accepted that I wasn't born with "good hair" and my hair would never grow long. I can't wait to reach shoulder length. That's my first goal. I'm wearing buns aided by scrunchies right now. I wear cornrows from time to time. Mostly to stretch my relaxer between the 8 and 12 week mark. I haven't used heat since June of 04. My hair is much stronger. I need to buy a camera. Maybe I'm suffering from Hair Anorexia???

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of LHCF!

My hair has never been as long as it is now (shoulder length) and that was primarily b/c of the way it had been cared for while I was growing up. I became a member of this forum when I came to college and my hair has certainly improved a lot! I wear protective styles 95% of the time and use quality products as well as sleeping on a satin pillowcase and use a scarf.

People are almost always going to give you hard time about the hair thing, especially when you tell them about this site, so I prefer not to say anything at all. Let your hair do all of the talking.

Whoa! NatalieD,

2 inches in 2 months? That sounds like a 4a/bs dream. It's definitely mine! Thank you ladies so much for responding. I'm feeling better already!
I think I can...I think I can...

Thanks 19sweetie! That's just what I'm gonna do...let my hair do the talking!

I'm soooo hyped now!

well, currently my hair is past my shoulders (with the top coming just to the base of my neck) and its the longest my hair has ever been....it was the same length for years and years, and then when i went natural it started to grow, but it would just break off cuz i didnt know how to take care of it....but now its on the grow...i came across the hair boards last summer and my hair has done VERY well since then! i have no problem believing your hair can grow to great lengths with a little tlc, and a lot of patience :D

My hair type is 4A but it's not fine....it's coarse. :yep:

I just wanted to encourage you to hang in there w. the good hair care. As long as you do that, I promise the growth WILL come! :yep:

Welcome, Tweezers. I am a 4ab w coarse hair. I did a b/c 1/8/05 and since my S8 and Glover's mixing, my hair has grown 4 additional inches. I am texturized now and am able to style my hair, thanx 2 the ladies on the board. Their suggestions and encouragement has helped me tremendously and I'm sure they can help you too!

Thanks for the encouragement Natrlchallenge and congratulations on your growth! That's great. I'm feeling better after hearing from all of you ladies. I'm working on being patient. I've gotten almost an inch of growth since my first post. I'm doing the stinky challenge too (glovers, sulfer 8, and frenchees mix). I know for sure that this is the most growth that I've ever gotten in a 1-month period.
