Hello Everybody,
I'm a newbie (just became a member TODAY) to LHC but have been floating around for months reading posts and learning about natural hair car :yep:. I'm finally making an effort to grow my hair out again (what use to be APL in highschool is now SL thanks to stress and breakage). My problem is I HAVE NO CLUE WHERE TO START. This past month I tried to begin by washing once a week, deep conditioning and adding some protein...i even did henna but it seems I'm getting alot of breakage. I know for sure I need my ends cut...

Well I'm not even going to go on and on I'll just get to the point. I'm a college student and can't really afford getting my hair done all the time anymore, I want growth and health and I almost gave up because it seems like such a difficult feat :nono: without a stylist at my side...

My products: Aubrey Organics GPB, Eluscense (Whole product line) and Joico K-Pac (reconstructor...but hasnt changed my breakage).

I'm sure other ladies will come in and help. Are you relaxed or natural? If you're relaxed I can't help that much but if you're natural then the GPB and the reconstructor would be a little too much protein. IF that's the case you need a moisturizing conditioner, lots of people love AO Honeysuckle Rose for deep conditioning and cowashing.

Generally, try to stay simple. I focus on keeping my hair clean, conditioned, and protected. For me that means I wash with baking soda and water (or just water), condition with coconut milk, moisturize with coconut oil/castor oil, and put my hair in braids under a wig.

Everyone has a different approach. You just need to find what works for you and don't do too much or add too much because then you won't know what's working.

Thank You Alot! And yes I'm all natural...I will definently make a stop to Whole Foods market to get some more AO, and I usually moisturize with coconut oil and castor oil.

I just reread your post and AO GPB, and Joico reconstructor, and Henna are all protein. So that may be the cause of some of your breakage.

If you are a natural that mainly wears straightened styles using heat then deep conditioning needs to be your best friend. You also need a good heat protectant.

I agree with Ladyhenri, searching should be your best friend. Deep conditioning regularly should really help to improve the health of your hair, especially if you're using heat regularly. But, you can search everything to figure out what you should/should not be doing and what products to use.
 
Sounds like you have quite a bit of protein. I'm relaxed, but I do a light protein treatment every week and the rest (shampoo, DC, leave-ins, etc) are moisturizing products.

It's said that naturals don't need as much protein as relaxed, so maybe you should try using protein sporadically

Are your Elucence products moisturizing products? It looks like you could use a good moisturizing shampoo and moisturizing conditioner in your product stash.
 
Thank you to all of you ladies. I'm just going through and reading the post.

I figure I do need to moisturize some more, but to MSA I have been avoiding using heat and heat styling. I usually with either rollerset or bun and just let my hair air dry in braids. I decided to use protein because my hair was stretching alot and a stylist suggested I try Joico K pak...yet my hair is still breakage. I will go ahead into moisturizing and see how that works out...and yes Allandra my Elucence is all moisturizing with one reconstructor product that I barely ever use.

Well, the Elucence moisturizing line is a good one. I used it a few years back when it was talked about pretty frequently on the hair boards.

I agree with the other ladies that you probably need less protein and more moisture. I would also suggest wearing hairstyles that allow you to hide your ends and retain more moisture in your hair (ex. buns). You don't have to wear them all them time if that's not your style though.

Finally, make sure you are wearing a silk or sating bonnet/scarf to bed every night. Wearing a cotton or polyester one (which has cotton in it) will strip your hair of moisture overnight and the rough rubbing can contribute to breakage.

LCHF has a wealth of knowledge in it, so be sure to browse around. And good luck with your hair. I understand what it is to be a college student on a budget (I'm still in grad school myself). ;)

Welcome to the forum!!! I think you need some moisture babe.. I'm in college too so I understand the need for cheap and quality products... My favorite moisturizing condish is NTM recovery mask with honey... HHG!!
