New TRANSITIONER in the house!

Alright, I finally think I'm ready to do it. I tried last year but ended up caving in. I've come to realize that my new growth actually isnt hard to deal with and that I can go a long time without a relaxer and not have breakage at the demarcation line. I talked to my stylist about it (she went natural last July, she's sportin baby dreads!) and decided that I will transition for about 2 years, or until my natural hair is about shoulder length.. whichever comes first.

I'm already 2 months into it.. and I've been having a battle with whether I should relax or not.. I love my new growth too much and I can't bring myself to do it. I figure that when I feel like wearing my hair straight I'll just use my Sedu, since I usually dont go more than 2 or 3 weeks with my hair down before I get sick of it and get braids or wear some other protective style anyway.

Thanks to starting to transition earlier this year, I already know how to deal with the 2 different textures, how to keep them from breaking, and what products work for my new growth. I don't think this will be so hard.

My first transitioning style will be kinky twists. I'm going to get them sometime in the next 2 weeks. Wish me luck!

The Sedu is my flat iron. I'll be wearing braids for the majority of it. I might try sew-ins.. but I can pretty much guarantee that I'll be wearing braids more often than not.

I'd like to tell you that I have been transitioning for almost a year. If I'd kept my hair braided or weaved for the majority of that time I would not have found what works well for my hair and what doesn't. I am saying this because you may want to consider this so that once your hair gets to your desired length you'll know what works for your hair; and you won't go back to relaxing. I am not sure what will work for my own hair once I am completely natural.

Best wishes to you all. I have a transition album if you need a transition style. I am style challenged so dont get happy...:grin. It got me through. So did shea butter! I really enjoyed my transition. I think it was because I was given wonderful advice and I did not expect my natural hair to act like my permed hair. So I never had any frustrations.

Feel free to check it out though if you need to. The password is "In Transition". Type it just like you see it...caps and everything.

Thanks. I do plan to wear my hair sometimes, but I will wear braids most of the time because I've transitioned before and know what works and what doesnt. The reason I relaxed is because I wore my hair out and it got to the point where I wanted it straight. I didnt have a flat iron then, so I caved. Thats why I dont plan to wear my hair out except for breaks between braids and when I flat iron it in April and August to see if I made it to my goals.

I totally agree. I'm just about 8 months into my transition and I have no desire to relax again.

Congrats and good luck Candibaby!

I too ended up caving in to a relaxer in July and October. Extending my relaxer touch-ups encouraged me to transition to natural as well. I also haven't had any major problems dealing with the two textures. I also love my new growth as well. :)

Congrats on your decision! Stay strong and always look at inspirational naturals to keep you motivated! ;)

Candibaby....Congrats!!!! This is my second go round at transitioning and I have found that it is much easier to do it during the winter months as opposed to the summer months........No humidity has helped me adjust and lean to appreciate my new growth. The baggie bun has been my staple and yes....I'm not even gonna lie.....I do get discouraged some but I just slap some "stuff"...ooops I mean product (lol) on my hair and pull it back......I still haven't been able to figure out my hair type yet....sometimes my hair wants to be a 2b and sometimes my hair wants to be a 3a.....I have learned to let my hair tell me who my hair wants to be and I listen....Good luck and when you need support, look at some of the old posts on transistioning...they give great inspiration!!!!!!
