Need Help with Length Check Comparison

I have been trying so hard to revive the ends of my sister's hair. I see the damage that was there before i started taking care of it and am trying to repair but it seems to be affecting her growth, unless i am just seeing things and worrying myself for no reason.

Anyway, i know i am going to have to eventually cut off these rough ends of hers but i was thinking that i am going to put in some braid extensions or some Senegalese twist in her hair for awhile because i don't want to cut it and chop off her length in the process right now. But if i do decided to do this, will she retain any length? It doesnt seem like she's retaining any now :sad:

Do yo guys have any ideas or pictures for other long term PSes that i could consider? I would love your input and also let me know if im seeing things
 
Its kind of hard to tell from the angles of the pictures, but it looks her hair may be an inch longer. The best thing may be to cut the damaged ends, but I think someone who has been a natural longer than I (and who has experienced this) would probably have better advice for you.
 
I can't tell the condition of the ends from the picture, but if they are split, it's best to cut them to help with her retention. If it's in braids, she won't miss it and it'll grow back. Plus, you'll help her retain going forward. My two cents. Let us know what you decide.

When my ends are bad, my hair disappears. It does look like the same length
she may have disappearing ends like me
the only way I can combat that is to keep my hair in Protective styles 24/7
and trim. I just ordered a split ender I hope that helps.

Maybe that's happening to her
does she wear her out a lot?

My hair is on LOCKDOWN for the next 12 months!

Kudos to you for helping her with her hair, I love her curl pattern!

But her ends arer HORRIFYING my God its just so much to cut! And i really don't want to :(. And no she doesnt wear it out alot.. i have it in PS most of the time
 
It looks like it grew. Not much but it did grow.

It seems like as fast as it grows somehow the length is not being retained for the most part.

IMHO damaged hair cannot be repaired, it has to be cut off.

Question, when you comb her hair to braid, do you see a lot of smalls pieces? If so then she needs a better moisturizer or she may need a light boost of protein.

My DD is 100% natural and no matter how much moisturizing I did prior to braiding I always had a bunch of little pieces all on my lap. Well I decided to do a protein conditioner and what do you know I had considerably less hair on my lap.

You can do the extensions, however I would not keep them in more than one month at a time and get a simple style that does not stress her edges. I used to get cornrows and I would have them start the braid with my hair and then they would feed in the extension hair. I loved it and I did not have to worry about thinning edges.

I feel loose braids especially on the edges are a disaster waiting to happen especially for a little girl that does not know how to be careful while putting them up into a ponytail.

I do protein treatments on it. she had a regimen. I just hate the way her ends feel... its one thing if i cut my hair, i just don't want to cut hers but i really might have to because i hadn't realized how long its been, her hair shed be longer than this by now.
 
This time last year my ends had gotten ate up because of protein overload.
the last thing I wanted to do was cut my hair. So I decided to cornrow my hair and leave it that way. Well 8 days later I took the braids ours and to my horror discovered I had lost another inch of hair. It was as if the bad ends were choking the life out of my hair.

So Jan 25, 2010 I broke out the sissors and gave myself and old school state board hair cut. Now my hair has returned healthier and little longer than it was before the cut.

Perhaps she needs a hair cut:perplexed

Thas exactly what im thinking ... its hindering her hair growth.. her pics are from June to January! She should have way more growth than that

Trust me from my own experience it's best to get rid of the ends now. The reason I say this is bc when I was transitioning fm texlax to natural I too was always in protective styles (braid extentions) but when I took them out my ends seemed to have gotten worse and I like you did not want to cut them from fear of loosing my length and progress bc it was definitely growing out nicely but I knew to about the inevitable. I had to cut them and I did. That was my biggest setback for 2010. It killed me to see how much I had cut but I'm glad I got rid of them and have no more ragged ends to speak of. Also from my experience if you don't cut them now the ends will become more damage and will creep up towards the roots. Like the OP mentioned it will grow back! Much healthier!!! And if you put in the braids or twist it won't be missed. But sometimes we have to go through setbacks to move onward. Hope this helps some at least.
 
i don't see any damage, but leave the protein alone and moisturize daily (your sister). cut off little by little.

I'm in agreement with everyone else who is suggesting cutting the ends and braiding it up. I'm having the same issue with DD. Her hair should be way down her back, but unfortunately she can't retain length to save her life. I kept it in a PS for a good six months straight (2-strand twist every two weeks with regular DC and steam treatment before every session). When I finally took it down and straightened it out to do a length check her progress was great.

However, she has this one section of hair that just refuses to catch up to the rest of her hair (it always looks layered). The last time I straightened it out, I had to trim 1/2" off her ends (because she has a bad habit of sleeping out of her satin scarves and bonnets). She also has a major case of HIH syndrome when her hair is straight.

I think after washing, doing a good DC, and inspecting her ends, I'm going to try to do a crochet braid install on her this weekend. If it works out well, that'll be her protective style for a couple of months.

Let me ask you, does your sister sleep with a satin scarf, bonnet or on a satin pillow case? If not, you may want to start doing that.

All in all, I say keep up the good work with your sister's hair. I'm sure she appreciates all that you're doing for her.:yep:

She has a bonnet and a scarf. I need to get her a pillow case though because that scarf never stays on.

Oh yes! i am so sure.. i cringe everytime i have to detangle her hair.. cuz the ends are THAT bad. But that is a 7 month comparison photo. her hair should be waayyy longer than that
 
How old is your sister? How is it her diet? Have you been able to pinpoint why her ends are so bad? Do you think she has a slow growth rate?

She's 8. I know she doesn't have a slow growth rate but her ends where like this before i started doing her hair. Its from her mom not taking better care of her hair. I haven't gotten her hair trimmed since i started cuz i was trying to revive some of her ends because i did that with my own hair. Its not working though so hair cut it is
