I have only stretched to 8 weeks, but I know there are some ladies out there that have stretched to 12 and longer.
I found that braids/cornrows help keep your hair to where you can't see it for a good while. I would also twist my hair into bantu knots and make a curly 'do that efficiently covered up the ng.
I use activator/moisturizer and an oil when my hair gets unruly. Then I throw a human hair fall on with a head band and keep it moving for the last month.
I streteched using moisturizers, henna to keep the shaft strong and avoid breakage, good protein treatment, castor oil. I also wear my hair up and protected most of the time, using phony ponies and foam donuts.
I normally stretch for 16 weeks but your maintainence during your stretch period will depend on how manageable your new growth is. I normally wash 1x a week and rollerset, then moisturize & pincurl at night and tie down with a scarf. In the morning I wear a curly updo or ponytail or bun. The scarf keeps my edges smooth. Or I do a co-wash 2x a week and use the ponytail method for drying. I usually braid the ponytail every night after applying moisturizer then tuck the ends under or wear a wavy ponytail. I make sure though I'm applying moisturizer everyday like Dove leave-in (keeps my hair and new growth very soft) and almond oil or jojoba oil and mango butter. A lot of ladies use S-Curl to soften their new growth also. Good luck!
Hi camosil! I am currently stretching for 6 months. I'm in my 4th month. I have been able to successfully stretch by protective styling with wigs, braids, scarfs, and buns with phony ponies. Also, I religiously deep condition and moisturize (2x per day). I have just begun to bag my entire head also. At this point, I only wash 1-2x per week. I wash in the shower and I only come my ends to detangle. I finger comb my new growth. I saturate my head with moisturizer and airdry. I tie a scarf on my head to lay my hair done (scarf method). In between wash days I just moisturize and use one of the previously mentioned protective styles.
