This may not apply to the women on this board because I know many women on here that wear wigs and weaves often are really protective styling. And fact of the matter is, many of you who wear wigs and weaves also give it a break ever so often.

This question isn't directed at those ladies.

But I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on women who are not necessarily into healthy hair care and maintenance, but you NEVER see them without a wig or weave.

I ask this because I have a number of family members who claim to LOVE their natural hair, but you NEVER see them sporting the hair they LOVE.

What are your thoughts? Can one really love something, such as their hair, but never want to flaunt it?

Maybe they just don't feel like styling their hair. I don't wear wigs or buns or clips as protective styles. I wear them because I'm lazy. I still LOVE my hair! Always have, but I've been wearing buns since middle school.

I wonder about that too honestly. Its kind of a contradiction in many ways to me. Furthermore once you reach your goal length how will you know how to take care of your hair if its always weaved up.

^^^^ I hear you. I had a lot of hair after I stopped wearing extensions and didn't know where to begin!

That's part of the reason why I'm not trying to wig it for the moment in the winter. I need to know how to handle my hair when it's cold.

I feel that once you know your hair, what it likes, what it doesn't like, you can safely put it in the wig/protective style and KIM :yep:.

I don't think you can love your hair until you truly know it.

Do your family members ever plan on wearing thier own hair out? Or are they trying to achieve growth? I think its ok to wear weaves to achieve growth but i agree with u and i dont understand the point of being natural if your not going to truely love it. I think one of the main reasons people may do this is because they dont know how to take care of thier natural hair and its just easier to throw on a wig.

Growth? I'm not too sure of. They don't have any healthy hair practices at all. No moisturizing. No sealing. Some even go months without washing. IMO, a little hair care is necessary if you are actually aiming at achieving some type of retension.

I've been able to get one on the bandwagon to actually doing a little research and trying new things. But others....eh! They're content with slapping on their pieces and proclaiming their love of their natural hair I guess.

I wear wigs and weaves. When i first started wearing weaves i was just wearing it cause i didn't know what to do with my hair my hair never took a proper perm. After my hair dropped and googled about hair care and how to take care of my hair it became more of a protective. Especially since i chopped off my hair. I prefer wigs to weaves cause you can more easily take care of your hair underneath. I say take care of your hair cause thats what i wear it as a protective style. When my hair grows out i intend to wear my hair out but for now the wigs are eaiser. The weaves are more for vacation especially if im going into water alot. But other than if my hair was longer than what it is now i would be happy cause i don't have buy my hair no more  to each they own. Oh btw op love your hair!

Yep - that's why we have private parts. I know women who wear wigs all the time - I know women who wear head wraps constantly. Not everyone's into flaunting. There are too many people making too much out of hair - i.e. looking at people, categorizing, making assumptions based on hair alone - that's annoying so it's understandable if some women choose to just keep people guessing. For plenty other women it's not that deep - they evolve into keeping their hair covered coz they don't like fussing over it daily or they don't have the time so it's much easier to just throw on a wig and go.

This is my sister. She has not worn her natural hair out in 4 yrs. NO LIE. She doesn't moisturize, seal, or anything. Her hair is dry and brittle. But she loves natural hair. :look: When I wear my hair out she says, "You have the face for it! I don't." I try to help her but she gets on the bandwagon for like a week and stops. I think it didn't help that one time she wore her hair out at school and people started laughing and staring at her. (She was in high school) I don't think she ever got over it. (She's 21 now.) I'm passing her in length and she's been natural for about 5 yrs now. I think people like this aren't ready mentally.

WOW! Someone is in my world...LOL! Okay, I have been natural for 4 years and my hair is finally APL. I have been wearing weaves/wigs consistently for the entire 4 years. I took my hair down last weekend and then it hit me "why are you growing long hair if you are never going to show it!?!" I always thought that there isn't much that I can do with my natural hair if it isn't blown out (and I don't like heat)! I got it pressed last night and humidity just got the best of me, so I went searching last night and decided to put my hair in a bun. The only people that have seen my hair in 4 years are fam/close friends, so today was my first day going au natural. I have gotten soooooo many compliments...I can't even believe it! This was my first bun and it is not too bad!! Now I am looking for other styles for my natural hair....I am really enjoying this! However, I will be getting a weave next weekend! LOL!

Your sister sounds like mine to a T! My sister has been wearing an all over sew in for over three years. It started out as a focus on growth because we both tried out relaxers for a year and managed to lose entire heads of MBL hair (pre LHCF of course). Her hair has grown a lot and is now BSL, but she just loves the weave because she feels like she doesen't have to do any work with it. She doesn't want to learn about things like protein moisture balance and finding the right conditioner; she just wants it to be easy. I am her go to hair source. I guess this is the way to go if you don't want to put in the time to learn what your hair really needs.....

I wear braids all year around and maybe a wigs twice a year. Just a preference I guess. My hair underneath is taken care of, I still wash the normal 2 times a week in braids. Braids are just easier for me to deal with. It seems like with my natural hair I always end up doing the same styles because I can't do wash and go's twisting my hair every week isn't even an option. Doing puffs day in and day out are just boring for me right now. Being a college student, single mother and taking care of my disabled mother, it is just quicker for me to braid my hair with extensions, wear it for a few months then do it over again.

As long as I still take care of my hair underneath and stay away from the perms then I, myself feel like I have done a 360 in my haircare. When I was permed I STILL wore braids and weaves but I could care less about what happened to my hair underneath. I would use track glue and just comb it out on dry hair. Double process perms. I just didn't care. One day when my life settles down and I can properly style my natural hair to my liking, then I will wear it out all the time. Right now, I just don't and can't. I guess when it comes down to it, it is personal preference just like being relaxed or being natural.

I never understood ppl like this. My sister has been natural for a little over two years now. She sports wigs 24/7, doesn't moisturize and bearly washes her hair. Her hair is broken and dry : (. I've transitioned for three months and have been fully natural since June and my hair is longer than hers. She doesn't want to hear my advice..and she says she doesn't look right with natural hair. Like someone said..some ppl aren't ready mentally.

I'm one of those people, I've worn a wig now for going on two years; I first started wearing a wig when I was trasitioning and pre-LHCF didn't know how to take care of my hair; then I BC'ed and didn't think the TWA was flatering on me; For me its a combination of multiple factors, I don't think short hair is flattering on me so I'm waiting for my hair to grow a little longer, I'm about 2 inches away from APL in the back my front and sides are a little bit behind; second reason is that I don't want to press my hair and since I've never really been good at styling my hair, I'm using this time to practice two strand twists, twists out and other styles; I take the wig off when I get home and practice styling on days I work from home; I also spend a lot of time taking care of my hair on a weekly basis and find it easier to care for my hair with the wigs, I can baggy every night if I want too and not have to worry about messing up my syle; finally I've retained a lot of growth over the last year and a half of wearing a wig, I had about an inch and a half after I BC'ed and I'm almost APL 16 months after my BC so something is working.

Honestly, I'm getting sick of the wig and plan to 86 it permanantly next April if I meet my hair goals if not then my 2 year BC anniversery is July 4th and that will be the end of the wigs.

I rarely comment in threads but this question has come up serveral times in the last few months especially when I tell people I'm natural and show them pictures of my hair so I thought I'd give my 2 cents.

Around years 3-5 of my natural journey I kept my hair covered under a wig. Honestly, without my locs I didn't know what to do with my hair. I barely knew what to do with my locs (I had a stylist, faithfully retighten me up every 2 weeks)

When I took my locs out, I was clueless. I spent almost 2yrs putting my strands through hell. I knew I had beautiful hair, I just didn't know how to style it. Co-wash, moisturize and seal...ummm what's that?!!

I used to shampoo, rinse, gel my hair back into a low pony, put a wig cap on and rock my wig..Voila! :nono:

A really good friend of mine told me how beautiful I was, and how I should start wearing my natural hair out more. I told her I would..but never did. Then one day, I started getting online more and learning more about places like NP...about a year ago, I found this place. I really started to take my hair care more seriously when I read Chicoro's book

I plan on wearing weaves during my entire transition because dealing with the breakage is not for me. Once i'm fully natural I intend to wear my hair heat straightened 90% of the time, I'll still love my natural hair. I think it depends on why the person chooses to keep their hair natural, heat straightened, relaxed, in a weave etc. Having a weave means easy care and a great protective style for me. My ultimate hair goal is to have long, healthy, thick hair... thats not happening on my head with a relaxer and i know i dont have the patience to deal with two extremely different textures everyday of my transition, I'd rather stay in a weave for now.

Im going to be honest for me.I have been natural for 3 yrs and I have worn a wig the whole time pretty much.I only for a few months wore my hair in a bun straight back..Im at a point that I can be truthful..the natural hair life for me persnoally didn't evolve to what I thought it would be so Im going to relax over the weekend..those who never wear their own I can only speculate they dont know how to style it or not have the confidence to wear it..some like me feel real ugly or fungly with natural hair..some look totally awesome with natural hair..its just not for me anymore..love this topic OP

I personally like wearing half-wigs and weaves. I'm styling challenge so I don't normally wear my real hair unless flatironed and I perfer my hair straight but relaxing isn't for me. Wearing wigs and weaves help me retain length and also gives me styling options. I believe to each their own.

The other thing is i HATE "traditional" protective styling like buns, but i know protective styling works! this is my way of getting over, im in a PS but im still able to wear my hair out.

OP, have you suggested minor changes to their sew-in regimen's? simple changes like DCing in the weave and moisturizing the hair underneathj with braid spray at least 1x a week can make a major difference in the retention of growth experienced whille in a weave.

I have, but I get the, "I don't have time" excuse. I dunno, maybe I just have too much time on my hands that I need to make sure my hair is well and healthy...just like any other body part.

I've recently started wearing half wigs all the time. Part of it is protective styling to reach my goal of APL (I take VERY good care of my hair underneath). And the other is bc honestly, my real hair looks a hot mess unless its straightened and I am trying to cut waaaay back on heat, so the wigs are my current solution.

I've been transitioning for 15 months. The first year all I ever did was straighten at the salon weekly. But then I noticed that my ends were starting to look limp and not as full as I would like, it took a while to notice bc I just assumed it was relaxed ends left. I never BC'd so now I still have a few relaxed ends, on top of heat trained ends in places. So basically my texture is all over the place and doesn't look right in any natural styles.

My hair texture is not very thick, and I think most natural styles look better with thicker stranded hair, so even once I grow out all the relaxed and heat trained ends, I still may not wear that many natural styles with just my real hair.

I know people who wear wigs/weaves 24/7. one of the girls I know who does this has gorgeous WL hair. She just wears weaves/wigs all the time because I guess its a lot to handle? I'm not sure. I'm convinced that it would look gorg if she wore it out though.

Are you sure we don't have the same sister? These words came straight out of her mouth! She loves natural hair and has been natural for over a year now but I've almost caught up with her (after 2 months of growing). She's always in wigs or braids with extensions. I think her hair intimidates her. She wants to love it, but she doesn't know how and doesn't have the patience to learn.

Maybe for some of the hardcore weave/wig wearers, they feel that because they're never gonna show their natural hair, then what's the point in wasting time and money relaxing it, when it's gonna be hidden anyway? So natural is how they'll leave it.

I wear wigs 95% of the time, but I've got some long healthy hair underneath. This week I've had my hair out, flat ironed, and I've really been enjoying it. It takes patience and real dedication to keep wearing wigs when your hair is long. But I'm committed to reaching classic length, so the wigs will stay in heavy use. (I'm Hip length)

laziness, lack of knowledge on how to take care of it or maybe they fear the response of the people around them about their hair. Those are some of the reasons I'm in braids. Of course it's winter, and it can be used as a PS but in all honesty because this is my first time being natural since i was 7 I'm really uncomfortable and weaves are really easing me into the idea of being natural.

I hide my hair 24/7 & 365 days a year and yes I love my hair.

I wear a BAA every day. But it's not mine, it's synthetic.
If i don't hide my hair i will get major breakage. So I do a sacrifice by hiding my hair, I won't do it if I didn't like my hair

ps : wig is the best ps I've met :spinning:
