Naturals who have permanently colored

BUMPPPPINNGNGG b/c I want to permanently color a streak in my hair and I need reassurance that it won't be a huge mistake! (as far as damaging issues) :ohwell:
 
i am natural and about a month ago i got my hair colored at an aveda salon. my texture did not change at all.

about 6 months before then i did box color on my hair, and while the color didnt completely take my hair loosened alot. for a week straight i slept with ORS mayo on my hair every night and my texture came back.
 
When I bleached my hair, the bleach made my hair a bit more manageable. I had more "shakable" body. My texture is 4b/c, yes there is a 4c, and it is the kinkiest and tightest texture! I'm currently growing it out and I can see the difference in textures between the bleached hair and my natural hair color. The bleach of course made my hair even more dry, so if you do bleach, I recommend a strategic plan for deep conditioning and moisturizing.
 
I highlighted and my hair suffered. It loosened the texture more than any relaxer I ever had and my hair was SOOOOO dry. I babied it for a year to get it back to normal.
Maybe there is a trick to keeping healthy colored hair. I dunno. It was pretty though - here is a picture of my fresh highlights - this was circa 2004:

My texture has not changed at all...However I moisturize daily, deep condition weekly and give myself protein treatments every couple weeks....I did this as well when I was relaxed
 
I'm colored treated and have had no ill effects via relaxed or now as a natural.

I don't use bleach -- I use Ms. Clairol luminize which is a lightner. I've had this color well over 10 years.
 
and and i told the lady at aveda i didnt want any bleach at all so maybe that helped. i dont think i will be refreshing the color though. i get tired of it too fast.
 
I have my hair lightened and it hasn't effected my texture at all. When I had highlights maybe 3 years ago, my highlighted portions had loosened up compared to my hair that didnt have highlights. It was still healthy but did loosen up a bit.

My hair color now- My entired head is colored now and peroxide (i think) was used. Because I wanted my hair so light, they had to use it to lift the color. I haven't had any damage at all.

That's really pretty. I envy those who can color without damage!
 
I have permanently colored. I was doing deposit only color for years, but in February I went bleached, and saw no ill effects. A few weeks ago, I went more bleached, and with a combination of cutting, and styling, and color, I don't see a texture change, but I think I have less hair, and I know my hair is shorter. :perplexed

I'll add some photos when I find some.
 
I bleached the crap outta my hair. Twice. And then I dyed it brownish blond. And then dyed that back to black all in the same year. I didn't notice any changes in my 4a natural hair. I was surprised actually. (I made sure to do a strand test, of course, to see how it would affect the feel of my hair as well as the color.)

Anyway, I'm colored, and it hasn't altered my curls.
 
I have colored a few times with no problems and no changes with my hair texture. I normally get chunky highlights and I have an appointment next month. I recommend Aveda. Below is an old puff pic w/highlights. I never colored as a natural and used bleach...never.

the only time bleaching ever messed with my texture is when i wasnt taking care of my hair and i let it get dry and brittle.

but when i was taking care of it and it was bleached my hair acted the same as it the hair that wasnt

I haven't heard of the luminize line; thanks for mentioning...I'll have to check it out.

Would I be able to lighten my jet black hair with this line...?
 
nope, texture is the same as always.
regular DCs and protein and you'll be just fine.
if you do it yourself, careful with overlapping the color...i used to put color on my ends like a dummy, and ended up having to do big trims.
 
It didnt change my texture. I used matrix and alittle of my igora:look: These pics are from the day i colored my hair. The bottom has NO color on it

I think I'm going to try and stick with some red rinses for a while and see if I can feed the color monster that way, and if worse comes to worse I will throw some more braids in my hair with some color in it, I'm trying to wait as long as possible to alter my hair permanently, atleast until I get it to the length I want it :)
 
I can say from experience that it is a MUST you have a stylist that you trust will do what is best for you hair in terms of process. When I went in a for a "new color look" i guess you can say, my hair was already colored in the front, just the middle section. I was back home visiting and decided to let my hairstylist I used when I was living there, relaxed, do my color. NEVER had an issue with her before, even with color. She has not seen me natural. So as I always had done before, I told I wanted color but didn't know what color. I looked through a few magazines and decided on a color that I liked. [Forgot to mention, I had came to her a day or two before for a "consultation"]. Ok, she she starts doing my hair. 1st red flag-the was usually something that was really strong and not a color:wallbash: ...it was bleach on my entire head. Didn't realize what it was to after I saw my hair. It was a blonde. It had a red tint in the front from where the previous color was, reddish but not fire engine. She seemed to feel that was the only way to get my dark brown hair to the color I want which was a sandy brown color. Needless to say, I was shocked at the difference [dark brown to blonde]. I told her I couldn't walk around like that...she put an auburn rinse on top of that, same day, which make my hair look like fire because of the bleach. Long story short, 2-3 color applications later, I am trying to grow the color out. I 3/4 of the length of my hair is a dull reddish/orange. I don't want to cut it off so I'm wearing sew-ins for rentention and to grow out the color. I did experience breakage because of all the coloring but also I didn't moisturize that I should have what...so...ever!!!:wallbash::wallbash: This was all prior to finding LHCF>:cry:.

Any hoo, I have cut off 2 inches and I see to be on the road to recovery. My hair looks much healthier to me and have been told so by others.

THe moral of my story is MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE COLOR AND STYLIST. You know your hair better than anyone. Most if not all of you here know what you hair likes, have a routine and strive for healthy hair first. My key peice of advise is to double your moisture. I am not at all trying to persuade anyone not to color:nono: because when I achieve my next hair goal APL, I plan to add some color to the front. No more full head color for me:nono:. I hope this helps. Thanks everyone for everything I've learned on LHCF-just wish I would have joined earlier.:yep:

Ditto... In my case the bleach didnt really dry my hair out, but I do deep condition weekly and mositurize daily. But the bleached part in my crown definitely took on a looser, more manageable texture than it was before... The hair in my crown has always had a looser curl pattern though so this doesnt bother me because im used to it. HTH :)
