For me... Dry finger detangling before anything on wash days it helps me remove shed hair preventing ssks thanks Chicoro!
Frequent dusting every 8-12 weeks helps my ends stay free of ssks
Moisturizing and Sealing - 2-4 times a week keeps my ends moist and strong no ssks
Shampooing my SCALP only ONCE or cowashing 2x keeps my hair from drying out I use to shampoo and repeat 1-2 times
Using MSM & Countrylife Maxi Strength and moisture
That's about it
I've retantion much more than I did at first

After I did my big chop I noticed I had a really bad case of hands in hair syndrome. At the time I was so amazed by my natural hair that I was always touching it. My hair didn't grow that long for the first couple of months. Once I made a mental note to stop touching my hair my hair thrived.

Before I became natural I used protein once a week. I thought I would need regular treatments of protein as a natural too, but I found out I didn't. Once I kicked protein out of my regimen my hair grew like crazy. Now if I experience breakage I use my garlic conditioner, or I use a conditioner that has vitamins or oils like RoseHip seed oil that are known to repair hair.

I also noticed prepooing overnight has also made my hair grow a lot. My hair loves twist outs. It prevents me from sleeping on my fro and I get less tangles and breakage. I do a twist out at least once a week. I wore my fro last week for a couple of days, oh my goodness, breakage city. I'm never doing that again.

Detangling in sections, and holding my parts as I comb my hair has drastically reduced the amount of breakage I get. It takes longer to do my hair, but its worth it. My hair seems thicker because of it. In addition mixing my conditioner with oils is one of the best things I could have done for my hair.

I stopped taking product/regimen tips from people with my same hair type and focused more on what other fine haired naturals were doing. I realized that my hair loves protein and have been giving it more and its been thriving

I'm not natural now but when I was, I had never heard of a moisturizer. Ever lol. I ripped through my TWA with a rat tail comb and wet it every time I showered. I let it airdry and shrink up. Just to turn around and rip it again. I tore my ends up from doing that. It wasn't until after I got a relaxer that I realized how dry and crispy my hair was. So for me, learning my hairs needs have allowed me to make leaps and bounds retention wise. I NEED moisture. Always. Not so much protein. But my hair is thirsty. So I keep my hair, especially my ends, well moisturized and lubricated. Oil has also been a crazy lifesaver now that I'm severely underprocessed. Everyone thinks I'm natural :) if that helps

I wore my hair out too much initially. I also got caught up with co-washing and moisture only. Then I realized that my hair hates co-washing and needs healthy happy doses of protein on a very regular basis (read: every...single...wash).

Exactly! I stopped co-washing and haven't looked back. :)
