NATURALS Who Blow Dry....How Often?

And, how frequently do you wash? My hair seems to shed excessively when I let it air-dry. When I was blow drying, it didn't shed a bit. So how often do you blow dry or diffuse your natural hair and do you use a ceramic ionic dryer?

I blow-dried every 3 to 4 months before flat-ironed my hair but I have stopped doing it now I braid and band my hair before flat iron it!

i blow dry every time i wash. usually once a week but in the summer twice a week. i JUST CAN NOT AIR DRY!!!:wallbash:
my hair never ever comes out right no matter what! its crispy, dry, brittle no matter what i put on it. i have been getting alot of shedding lately too because i started...to try...again...air drying. its not working out. my hair does much better with wash, blow and curl(or just blow and put up in a roll or french braid). i continue to have set backs whenever i try the air dry method. i'm to the point where now i so totally realize, if it aint broke, dont fix it!

I have been natural a month and I don't blow dry...I guess because of the length I don't see the need to. I will probably do so next week before I go and get it braided but even then I will consult her and see what she thinks...I don't want to use that much direct heat on my hair right now

I never blowdry my hair. It makes it feel like hay. :nono: I have diffused on occasion but it didn't really do anything for me. I prefer to airdry.

Thanks for the replies so far!

I've been natural for about 1 1/1 year now. I have never used heat on my hair in that time. I only airdry. When I was relaxed, I blowdried....however whenever I would try to let my relaxed hair airdry I would get more noticeable shedding, so I resumed my blowdrying. So i dunno, it looks like my hair works well with heat regardless of its state--relaxed or natural. Surprised the heck outta me too!

I'm with Honeybadgirl, I blowdry with every wash. I don't have a set schedule of when I wash my hair, sometimes it is every week other times it is every other week. I don't have the patience to airdry and I also don't like the way my hair feels. I have been natural for 2 years now and it has not caused any setbacks or damage to my hair.

I blow dry when I straighten or wear braidouts 1-4x a month depending on my mood. My hair hasn't suffered any damage. I highly suggest using ceramic/ionic blow dryer. It makes a major difference in the way your hair turns out IMO.:yep:

Now if I go to a "professional" to get my hair blow dried--that's a totally different story....

I do get mines blowdried and flat ironed at the salon though. He does a good job.

I get my hair blown out twice a year when I straighten. I usually get it done at a domincan salon (Arelis or Judiths). However, this time I may try a roller set and flat Iron at Yodit's (she's ethiopian) Salon Revive (it's an Aveda concept salon). I saw her do an amazing job on a clients hair back in May while I was there for a trim. I also noticed they used mesh rollers for the set.

I just started but i always airdry or use a diffuser so maybe like once every 3 months..lol its not on a regular ive never even flatironed my hair but i scared of heat.lol

I'm on a heat hiatus for the summer, but normally I will blowdry and flat iron my hair once a week or every two weeks depending on my mood. I have a blowdryer with a comb attachment, and I use it on the lowest setting followed by the "cool" down button.
And I always use a heat protectant when i blowdry to help protect my strands, usually Phytodefrisant, or Tresseme or Nexxus Heat Protect.

i also cant airdry, loose too much hair, i blow dry every wash day(10days) on cool setting, and bun. i think i'm thriving this way

I blowdry probably twice a month. I wash two or three times a month. I very rarely style from soaking wet hair, so I use the blowdryer to stretch it first. I have a Revlon Tournaline Ionic ($19 at CVS!).

It's been a few years since I used a regular blowdryer, and I was relaxed then so that may have been part of it, but I ALWAYS had breakage when I blowdried back then. Now, I never have breakage and I haven't seen any heat damage on my natural hair.:yep:

I only blowdry when I straighten my hair which is never more that 3-4x per year. I tend to cowash often sometimes daily so blowdrying with every wash would def not be practical for me.
:perplexed:

I blow dry with every wash- and I do not have a specific set amount of days, just as needed (2,3, or 4wks or whatever). It saves my hair from the knots/tangles and excessively dry hair i get when I air dry. I actually tried the tension method (after I saw gabbanagirl's post on Caruso rollers-check it out) and it got my hair straighter than the comb attachment and in less time. I always use the high setting (my dryer is ionic only has high/low).

please let me know how this turns out. I'm in DC and have read reviews about them on YELP

virtuenow are you still blowdrying with every wash? I'm thinking about doing this too.

I just washed my hair today and blowdried it. I'm trying to decide how often I'm going to do it b/c when I airdry, my hair is a shruken, tangled mess. I'm thinking every other week.

Yes, I do it more often now--- doing some psuedo heat training attempts w/more flat ironing. I'm working on modifications every few months it seems (like blowdrying w/tension only; or on cool setting, etc.).

Thanks for answering! What do you use as a heat protectant virtuenow

I'm thinking about doing it every couple weeks too.

I use Nioxin Thermal Bliss Protector. I spray it on each section before I blow dry. It is the best heat protectant I have encountered. Much better than the sticky serums. You should search SalonCabelo's youtube video's, she does alot of tutorials w/the nioxin bliss

I blow dry on every wash day which is every 2 weeks. Whether my hair is flat ironed or braided, without blow drying my hair isn't manageable. I always use Fantasia Heat Protectant and I also DC on every wash day.
