My dear child, if you have type 4 hair that is natural, you're asking for problems if you dare go to bed with loose hair.
Even when my hair was this short:
I would plait it for the night and baggy (S Curl applied) so that it'd be easy to comb in the morning and to style into this knot-free, tangle-free fluffy puff:
Knots and tangles and hair that takes forever to style are things I have not experienced in my hair-growing journey because I don't forget what type of hair I have. I don't try to emulate other hair types or treat my hair like it can do things they can. Type 3 and 2 and 1 or relaxed heads can just tie a scarf and go to bed and have normal hair next day. Type 4 will just be asking for knots and tangles and a headache to boot. I have avoided those because from when I was knee-high, my mother plaited my hair for the night. Since 2003, I've only had to detangle my hair once, and that was the day I went to bed w/o plaiting my hair. Never again.
Anyway, now that my hair is in twists 24/7, when I go to bed, I just put on a plastic cap and call it a night. If I know what style I will we be wearing the next day, I just style my hair before tying Saran wrap for the night. For example:
This wrap was done:
...because I knew that the next morning I wanted to wear my protective style updo:
So in the AM, all I did was add that clip and head out the door. Easy peasy!
