What's your vote: Healthy hair but boring hairstyles (i.e.: twists, buns, etc...) OR Stylish hair but not as healthy hair (chemicals, heat, etc...) ?

Healthy but boring.....my style of late is the bun! :)

Definitely hair health. I wouldn't trade my luscious thick locks for something fried, died, or laid to the side anyday.

Can I vote for both?

It's usually healthy but boring, but on vacation it was stylish and less healthy (heat). By the way, I tried to combat the style effects by steaming in my conditioner a couple times a week.

If I had to choose one I'd choose healthy hair above stylish, but "stylish" is so subjective...

I think it's quite possible to have stylish, and healthy hair. The only options aren't "boring" buns and up dos. Twistouts and braidouts look great and aren't harmful at all. Hair can be pulled straighter and smooth without using heat by banding it. Rollersets are another good option.

I used to iron my hair bone straight every other day or every three days. It was shiny (from product) and straight as a pin but horribly unhealthy. It broke all over the place and I had splits all the way up the shaft. I'll take health any day.

'Stylish' is subjective --- especially with the choices offered in that poll...

Since when did twists become boring?!?

Now if you said something like natural 'out' styles (i.e. puffs, twist-outs, etc) vs. healthy/protective styles (i.e. twists, box braids, etc) then I wouldn't be so confused, but 'chemicals' and 'heat' aren't natural styles, unless the chemical you're referring to is color.

... I didn't vote because I have stylish healthy hair. ;)

I prefer healthy hair, which is why I don't press my hair much even though I like how my hair looks pressed. I try to wear low stress styles like braidouts.

I agree. You can have stylish healthy natural hair without chemicals and heat. Twists and buns and updos can be quite stylish on natural hair as well. Any style can get boring if you wear it all the time.

DITTO!

Those styles aren't boring at all. I choose Healthy/Stylish! I won't straighten my hair (chemicals/heat) because THAT'S too boring and not worth damaging my hair, in my opinion. :)

Health over style, but like it has been said, I can have both healthy AND stylish hair. I know how to dress up ANY style.... A bun or twists don't have to be boring AT ALL!

I don't think the op meant the twists themselves were boring. I think it's more the same style twists and the same buns.

Either way I have a "longer" twa so i can't really wear twists or buns anyway..

She dont mean boring, but I want healthy I only use heat when I want to see lenght. It dont look that good if its not healthy I love boring twist in a bun. I love having my hair is a bun and I am proud to be able to put it in a boring bun :D

Another vote for healthy and stylish! Now that I have a little practice my twists are too cute, and I can do a lot of styles with them, I have no desire to fry or dye my hair.

I also agree that protective styles can be stylish and fun. I wore curly 2-strand twists for my wedding. And I've seen lots of women rock nice buns for their weddings and at special events. You can always jazz up styles with nice hair ornaments (scarves, flowers, etc....) I stick with protective styles because when my hair is loose it dries out. I was using heat monthly but now I am on a low heat challenge because I am trying to retain length.

Question: I was thinking of using a hooded dryer once monthly to do roller sets or straw sets. Is that too much heat?

ITA agree with everyone who said that healthy protective styles don't HAVE to be boring.... heck, in fact, I think that they tend to be MORE creative because you have to use more imagination/skill to get something that looks right. Ain't no real thought required to press your hair straight and spiral curl it - but to combine a flat twist and two strand twists and a hair accesory into a hot style that has people doing double takes - that's the furtherest thing from 'boring' ever.
And really - considering how - interesting/complex/varied our natural hair is - I've always considered STRAIGHT hair boring.... *shrugs* it just hangs there, unless you put a curl into it....

I didn't vote because I don't think these two choices are really accurate.

My hair is natural... and it's healthy AND stylish! I don't wear any of the styles listed in those categories.... my regular style is a shake-and-go that I think looks pretty darn stylish, if I say so myself!

I agree with bunny77 ..natural hair can thrive healthy and look cool and stylish at the same time..this is up to how creative you can get!! the possilibilites are endless..happy growing ladies
