What's your secret to keeping in moisture in the hair shaft when airdrying. Has anyome been able to do this with having dry crunchy hair feeling. I'm hoping to have great success at this, when i remove these braids in FEB/MARCH 2006. thanks in advance

actually i was at the same point as you. my hair would feel brittle, dry, and crunchy when airdrying if i just used plain oil. if i were you id try Oyin products (www.oyinhandmade.com)- particularly their whipped pudding (sort of like a daily moisturizer) and their greg's juice (a leave in conditioner)- ive recently started using them, first by using greg's juice to detangle hair post shower and then the whipped pudding all over my hair (focus being put on ends also) and my hair has never retained so much moisture!!

it came at a good point because my hair was brittle and breaking and now that i have 2-3 inches of new growth the texture is definitely NOT clashing with the relaxed hair. I dont want to process it again (maybe a perm in the future but for now, im coping) and this break is a blessing. i just put the whipped pudding in my hair after combing it out and then throw it up in a bun. try it. the moisture is incredible!!!

good luck!

Thanks for your review meia, I'm going to have a look at that website. Because of my dry hair problem i had to go back to vitamins, i now take silica, msm and flaxseed oil, after 8 days my hair is feeling softer already, i will never give up on them again. I'm hoping to attempt airdrying again, so i really needed to hear about these products.

I airdry every time I wash and that's twice a week. My hair comes out soft and moisturized. After I wash, I put a leave in (usually Salerm 21) and coconut oil on my hair. I then put my hair in two pig tails. Once my hair has dried some, I'll put a moisturizer (ORS Olive Oil Hair Lotion, My Honeychild Sweet Almond Hair Milk or Optimum Hair Therapy Creme Oil) on and braid up the pig tails.

I've been airdrying for a while... (about 3 yrs).
My hair is always nice & soft afterwards.
(in this order) prepoo (sometimes), poo, condition, detangle, oil/butter, braid (or twist), airdry.

products... Lustrasilk Aloe, Botanicals poo, Elucence cond, K-cutter to detangle, homemade butter (melted/mixed shea/cocoa/mango butters)

I leave in some conditioner then add oil and then Elucence serum. Seems to do the trick. Oh - I sometimes switch it up and add a thick cream after. I can't remember the name but I know it has shea butter and cocoa butter in it. I buy it at Walmart.

I like to apply Giovanni Direct & WGO before airdrying. It always keeps the frizzies away, and locks in moisture. I also like NTM HSS or Giovanni SOTT or Redken Moist Ends for the last inch of my hair. It seals my ends and keeps them from splitting and looking frizzed up. I've been airdrying since February, and my hair has REALLY thanked me. It's so much healthier, has a natural sheen, and it's thickened up even more. With pooing/DCing 1x/wk and CO washing 1x/wk, I think blowdrying and/or flat ironing would be too much...plus airdrying does not require the time & work that rollersets, flat ironing etc do.

Excellent topic, Den!

This sounds great... epecially the coconut oil, I mix it up with my world of curls. I couldn't place my hair in pigtails though, it would definitely matte and tangle and dry up with my diffrent textures i'd have to section. Seems like a lot of you use natural butters/ or plain oil. I wonder if type 4s have success with this?

Large magnetic hair rollers and OYIN products. I put in the oyin when my hair is damp. It dries stretched, and soft for days

Which OYIN products do you use thanks?

I airdry almost every day and I haven't had problems with dryness or crunchiness. IMO the regular rinse-out conditioner you use when you wash your hair is just as important (if not more) as the products you put in afterwards. Make sure you're using something that's soaking in and doing some work, not just sitting on top.

Otherwise, I find that using a small amount of moisturizing leave-in followed by an oil to seal it all in works best. I'm using Giovanni Direct and jojoba oil from The Vitamin Shoppe. I've also used coconut oil (Spectrum Unrefined Organic Coconut Oil) for this and it works well too.

I haven't used moisturizers in my hair since my big chop which was at the end of March. If I didn't wash my hair so much I might consider using a little something in between washes, but it would be very light. Putting too much stuff on your hair is just as likely to make your hair feel dry or stiff as not putting enough.

i need some help in this area too. i'm transitioning also.

when i use carols daughter healthy hair butter, it provides the best moisture (sans the crunch) when i air dry, although using too much can make my hair feel greasy. it provided me with much better moisture than elasta qp mango butter (but thats good too).

i am on the hunt for a more moisturizing product also. i am really interested in more natural products. i only have about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of new growth and i air dry all the time. i put it in a bun while its wet. but i take it down at night to re-moisturize and thats when i feel how dry it is (or isn't).

I'm all natural 3c/4a with about 6-8 inches of hair. After I wash, I like to let my hair air dry partially with nothing on it for about an hour--no towel drying or anything. I think that towel drying roughs up the cuticles and makes tangles more likely.

After that hour is up, I either use MOP Leave-in conditioner, or Abba Nourishing leave on conditioner. On top of that, I use virgin organic coconut oil to seal in the water from the shower and the moisture from the leave-in conditioner. Then I make some big twists or braids to dry/stretch my hair. Most of the time, I wear 2-strand twists all week.

i air dry in 2 ponytails i cowash every 3 days with a mix of lekair shea butter cholesterol and vo5 free me freesia together and leave it overnight. and when i rinse the hair is soft and moisturized then i put some wgo and little grease after rinsing and directly put the hair in 2 puffs buns while wet and make sure i grease the whole thing real quick with indian hemp pomade and then i put the plastic bag the hair is never really dry but stay moisturized for days then i take out the plastic cap and stay all day with my two puffs i look like mickey mouse kinda and then to sleep or to stay in the house i dont put the plastic cap and just the satin bonnet the next day my hair was dried but moisturized if i touch i could feel it and when i removed the ponytails even though i m 4b natural the hair was straight i kid you not and the whole length was moisturized i think its also due to all the msm and silica i m taking so stick to your vitamins and before airdrying try leave the conditioner under a cap for added moisture and use the wgo too before the air is dry put ponytails even 2 or 4 and grease the ends normally when it s dried it should still be moist when you touch it i could feel a lil bit of grease even after 4 days and without reapplying. sometimes for instance now since i airdried i m in twists and if i feel that after 4 days the hair seems a lil bit dry then instead of just sleeping in my satin bonnet, i pull out my plastic cap and put it underneath just to make my head sweat again for a day until moisture is back so i dont have to reapply grease or dont have to wash it again hope it helps

Hi Den1,

My daughter has 4a/4b texture and hates her hair being combed due to lack of moisture.
I recently recieved my orders from Oyin and used Greg juice and Whipped pudding on her hair and combed it out very well and also used a small teeth comb too and guess what? She did not cry and her hair came out soft and moisturised. These products are keepers!
Give them a try!

den1- no problem girl! i think what helped my hair the most was simplfying my hair routine and not using so much of that extra junk anymore to soften my hair..id probably have to say when i used non natural/organic products, i did more damage than good!i stopped with vitamins, even mtg...i realized that now my texture is more liveable than something i come to dread..

ajargon02- yess girl oyin products do it for me too! keep my hair so soft and moisturized for days and the little new growth curls are soo soft! makes me wanna cut my relaxed hair off entirely!!
hehehe

jngn- thats what i use too! it has a great effect on my hair

brandy- my hair was really hard to get a comb through as well..it hurt SOO BADLY and got ripped out..when i started to use oyin for moisture and leave-in, dr. bronners for a daily or every other day cleansing (shampoo), and started to use a metal pick (has to be metal! plastic rips hair out!), my hair has been a dream ever since with BEAUTIFUL texture..

I'm really interested in the nsatural products too. After reading about Carols daughter I phomed up a beauty salon in London, to enquire about their pices, i was shocked when she told me £7.50 for 4oz thats prob. $13. Its a shame the ingredients would be really great for my hair, but my cash flow is low. I had to pass up the oppotunity.

EKOMBA GIRL I ALWAYS LOVE YOUR POSTS, THEY ARE SOOOO DETAILED AND MOST OF ALL HELPFUL. Oh so you do the baggie trick too, its really great isn't it? I could just imgaine your soft cute little mickey mouse puffs lol what is really suprising how you managed to airdry it straight. the MSM and silica appear to be extremely potent over long term use. i've been using them almost 10 days now and newgrowth coming through is softer already. Thank you so much for this info.
