Hello.... I'm looking for references for online photo albums of naturals who seek/maintain/maximize curl definition. I'm still transitioning, but I'm looking for guidance on how to maximize curl definition, without being a slave to gels, creams, serums, etc.

Thank you for the references and any tips/guidelines on this topic.

My hair is curly/coily when wet. When it dries without product the curls/coils turn to frizz. When I use a combo of creamy leave-in and sparkelites gel on wet hair, it preserves the coils/curls when my hair dries.

Now I'm not sure if this qualifies as slavery, but it works. :look:

You can check out my album for product reviews.

Hello.... thanks for responding.... My hair sounds similar to yours.... I use that combo as well.... I wouldn't call that slavery....

Jcoily,

Does the combo make your hair white looking? Also do you have to used a hair dryer?

thanks

Aveda Be Curly is my creamy leave in and I don't notice it creating a film on my hair. Garnier Fructis is awful with the film, even their 'clear' products leave film.

Also, I only do my hair at night when I get in from work so it's about halfway done airdrying by the time I wrap it up to go to bed. By morning it's completely dry. Take a look at my May album to see the wet dry puff pics.

That's nice JCoily. I'll have to try that on my and my daughter's hair. I seem to always wake up with a wet head though so I've never actually put any product like sparkelites on a puff - too afraid that my hair will NEVER dry.

Here are some product lines you may want to consider for maximizing curl definition:

Curls
Curl Junkie
My Honey Child
Blended Beauty
Kinky-Curly

My curls happen naturally, but that doesn't mean I don't want them to look and feel their best. I can maintain curl definition naked or with just a creamy heavy leave in, but sometimes I want my hair to hold, and that's where my products come in, especially in the summer. I don't think using products and gels makes me a slave to them, I just know my hair, and what it needs to behave properly. Also, what works for some may not work for another. Some people mix a cocktail of products together to achieve maximum curl definition. I hate layering so I only use one, and that works fine for me because I like to keep it simple.

RelaxerRehab, since you are still transitioning, you may not really find out what your hair can do until you are fully natural. But FYI, the owners of those companies I listed above are very helpful when it comes to deciphering what the best products would be for your hair. If you email a photo to them with the best description possible of your hair, they will recommend products from their lines based on your wants and needs. I hope this helps some, good luck. :)

GodMadeMePretty...your baby is so cute!!

I cant wait until I have to worry about curl definition ...sigh... only 6 more months until my big chop...put I am definitely taking notes :D

Hi, Curlilocs....

Thank you for the recs. You're right.... I'm still transitioning...just looking ahead to the glory of the fully natural!:)

Thanks to all for your responses....

I do shake-n-gos as my primary style, so texture uniformity is rather important to me.

I find that the very best definition comes from the following steps:
-Conditioner wash or rinse with condish without silicones or heavy protein (except silk protein)
-Add a little leave-in conditioner and some gel (almost any one will work about the same for this)
-RINSE OUT the gel with cool water
-Shake wet hair vigorously and go.

I also get good curl definition when I just CW/CR, shake-n-go without products. Adding and rinsing out the gel gives me a little more definition in the front and sides of my hair, which is wavy/frizzier as opposed to curly.

Using the shaking technique is the real key for definition to me.

The gels that I own: IC Fantasia clear and blue; aura hypoallergic gel; Oyin shine and define; smooth-n-shine curl activator gel; bbd glass. Favs are the Fantaisa blue, oyin, and aura for when I don't rinse out the gel.

So you add gel in the shower then rinse. I may have to try that. I'll bet IC Fantasia will be perfect for that. I hate how crunchy and hard it dries for me.

Your front and sides sound like mine. My curl pattern is looser and frizzier on the sides and in front too.
