Naturals:How long did you transition before you cut off your relaxed ends?

Because I was so excited about having my hair natural, I transitioned for only 3 months. It was really hard because I had never had my hair that short before. And I had to deal with all the feelings of looking like a boy. If I had to go through it again, I would definitely have tried to transition for a year. Now that I can get my hair in a ponytail or bun, it's been smooth sailing.

Wow, why so long?
I checked out your fotki and your hair is amazing!
thanks
mainly laziness to the nth degree
I'd finally found an easy way to deal with my hair, a fairly quick routine where I could wash it more yet it was healthy and manageable. I guess once I got that down I didn't want to change.
Plus, I was trying to see if I could get close to waistlength once I realized that my hair really could grow
Later it'd been pure laziness though; knowing I needed to learn how to do natural hair. And I couldn't get any family or friends to volunteer to help me cut it and I'm a certified hairdresser-phobe now, so I had to wait until I got up the nerve (and time) to do it myself. And the cut looked... :look:

I made it to 11 months. Wasn't planned. Just got tired of looking at the straight ends.

3 mos.

My last relaxer was in Aug 05 and I chopped in November of 05

I wore kinky twists, braids and cornrows till I got comfortable with my own hair, which was about June 06.

6 months. fotki stalking prompted me to chop sooner that i had planned. i had originally planned to chop at 9 months. it was the best decision i made. i treated my hair badly when i was transitioning because i did not know what the heck i was doing until about 1-2 months before i chopped when i found hair boards. at that time, my hair was already in braids so i couldn't do anything like DC'ing, protein treatments etc.

I plan to go 2 years before I even think of cutting
One down... One to go.
I'm doing it that way because I want length first
my goal is to get to BSL transitioned and then
trim away until I am 100% natural FULL APL unstretched
and FULL BSL straight/stretched.

I transitioned for 6 months. I got my last relaxer on the morning of my sister-in-law's wedding, which was in the middle of December in 2002. I had already made up my mind to transition after getting my touch-up that one last time. Then I found out I was pregnant probably a couple weeks after that--that gave me that extra motivation to not relax.

I BC'd on a whim in the middle of June 2003--we were on our way to a beach vacation and I said, "What will I do with my hair while we're away? All that saltwater and chlorine water and activities? When will I have time to mess with it?" I went and got in the mirror and cut my relaxed ends off at 2 in the morning. I've done at least one other BC since then, and several little chops. I'm actually for the first time actively growing it out since I stopped relaxing.

it was about 9.5 months. IMO it wasnt long enough. this time around them my texturized ends are staying around for much much longer. i do not plan on BCing again.

hopefully i can cut it all off in november :yep:
ill be doing a mini chop in may on the 11th july11th sept 11th and nov hopefully al relaxed ends off

but my *** will be in braids through this transition:lachen:

the 1st time I did it for 2.5 years...only I didn't know I was doing it..I just wasn't relaxing my hair, and discovered the ease of a wash n go

this time out I plan to go probably for 2 years again. I only have 8 more months, and that's nothing. I did mini chops throughout my pregnancy, and I'lll maybe do one more before summer, before I stop trimming altogether.

I also want length (and health) and will just cut my relaxed ends off when I reach my length goal

6 Months. It was just time. I was tired of dealing with the two textures b/c I did wash n go's and used no heat. Once the texlaxed curls couldn't hide my New Growth there was little I could do. I was too terrified of straightening it all and ruining my natural hair as it grew in.

I'm starting to get that itch...I know I JUST said I wanted to wait 2 years, but I'm wearing wash n gos...and it's more like a wash n no right now...I'm feeling like a BC is coming.

I just want SOOO badly to see my curls w/out the weight of relaxed ends ....but I'm scared of having my hair short. I have a lot more shrinkage than I thought, and even though I have about 8 inches of new hair, I have a feeling it will look like 4 inches once I chop...:nono:

I didn't cut anything off. I'm not sure how long it took, because I wasn't really aware that I was "transitioning." I just stopped relaxing and started pressing. And then I put my hair in braids or cornrows which I wore for most of 5 months. By the time that period was over, I was completely natural. I think I was natural even before cuz I was able to twist (for the very first time!) between braids. My guess is that the relaxed ends grew out / broke off over a period of a year or two.
