TRANSITION OVER! 11-22-14
I am going thru a minor hair crisis. I can't style my short curly hair the way I want to. I think if it was a bit longer, I could at least find it easier to start and finish the braid or twist style i've been trying to perfect . Perhaps slap it in a pony tail n go style. Ugh, can I ask any of you, how long it took for your hair to get long enough to no longer be considered a twa? I thought I no longer had a twa, but I still feel like I have one. :ohwell:

It took me around 6 or 7 months from what I remember (it was back in 98-99). I remember I cut it really short-sported a texturized twa for a couple months then grew it out with braids which I kept in for like 4 months. If you are getting frustrated about it-maybe you can sport braids until the spring or something-just a suggestion

my hair is by no means LONG yet...but its definately longer than a TWA...I think it took me about 5 months to grow it out from a TWA to just a regular, short length

If you factor in shrinkage, it's going to be a while before your hair really shows length, unless your hair is looser. So while your hair may be growing, it won't look it. That's something I had to get over, and know that I don't need to blow it out or straighten it for some kind of validation.

I do stretch it often, though, to see the progress I'm making.

Be patient with it. I had to have a good 5 or 6 inches before I could start to feel comfortable with it.

I would defintely spend some time in the natural albums of many who have gone the gammit! TWA to BAA! I will be 2 years natural next month. My hair in back is about 6 or 7 inches from bra strap. I used to worry a lot about getting it there as fast as possible. Now I have learned that my hair retains length the better I care for it and grows like a weed when I do the least to it.

It'll get there Ma...just enjoy the journey in the meantime.

I agree with Pookey (I love your album by the way). I am always stalking natural albums. I started out with about 5 inches of hair, right now my hair is about 7 inches long. I don't have a twa but I do know it will be a number of months if not a whole year before I see the length I want.

Thank you chica! Glad you enjoyed it.

Can any of u tell me what styles u did other than braids? I'm getting bored w. just my curly fro. I'm trying to do mini twists, but they always turn out fuzzy.
My natural journey so far is a success, but most of my hair education is based on relaxed hair. I don't really know what my hair type is, all I know that I have 3 different types of curls on my head. Tiny spirals, cork screws, and c shaped curls all over. It's strange the way it sounds, but it's why I'm having technical difficulties styling my hair. If I don't put some gel on it, tho, u really can't see the curl definition all over. I can't wait til my pics are ready so I can show u that I'm not making this up. :ohwell:

I never did the big chop. I let my relaxer grow out for about 20 months and then I chopped off the relaxed ends. So my hair right now is pretty long. If I stretch the twists I have in right now, it's about 3-4 inches from bra-strap - maybe less if it's completely straight.

I think if you get a styling product that limits the frizz, you'll be happier with the twists. I tried a few - ORS' Loc and Twist Gel worked very well for my daughter's hair. Her hair is fine. For my hair, it's all about the shea butter. When I slap on a pile of shea butter, my curls POP. I have some twists in my hair right now that I wear either down or half pulled up. Usually I have some unraveling at the ends. I've never had them stay in this long and not look ragged and I accomplished it with the unrefined shea butter. Thanks to Irresistible for reminding me that simple (and cheap) is still good. The kinky-curly pudding that cost me $22 is sitting in my cabinet waiting on me to use it again. I'm going to use it up - probably as a daily moisturizer for my daughter when she's in the twists and for shine. After that's gone, I'm going to go back to the ORS oil blend spray for shine.

My hair grows about 1/2 inch a month so while growing out a twa I slapped on a headband to keep it off my face until it grew out more - about 6 months before I could do more to it OR you can 2-strand or single strand twist the hair during this interim stage.
